“The Spirit” North Kildonan United Church
September 2020
It has been over five months since our community and the world has endured the
effects of the coronavirus pandemic…and it’s not over yet. The myriad ways that our
society has adapted to these effects is, at times, overwhelming. Sports events,
music concerts, festivals, markets, religious gatherings, weddings, funerals and more
have been cancelled, postponed or re-imagined to align with health protocols and
ultimately for the safety and protection of us all.
At North Kildonan United, we have been blessed with the gifts of service from the
McMillan family, Joan, Heinz and Rev. Don who have prepared online worship for us.
There are many others who have assisted, from the worship committee to lay leaders,
to UCW and we thank all who have stepped forward in this endeavour. We are excited
at the prospect of re-opening the church to in-person services and gatherings.
Unfortunately, there are some folks in our province who are tired of taking
precautions and have forgotten to be vigilant in adhering to health authorities. We
need to remember that the things we are asked to do are not simply for our own
protection, but for the well being of others. We are all in this together, connected in
long lasting ways. Let us continue to adhere to the advice of health professionals and
above all, let us be kind to one another as we navigate this new way of living.
As Paul says in 1 Corinthians 13, "Love is patient, love is kind” and “Love bears all
things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things." Let us continue
together in prayer and in peace in the knowledge that we are children of God. Thanks
be to God.
S.M.

.
Be a Light
In a time full of war, be peace
In a time full of doubt, just believe
There isn’t that much difference between you and me
In a time full of war, be peace.
In a place that needs change, make a difference
In a time full of noise, just listen
Don't hide in the dark, you were born to shine
In a place that needs change, make a difference.
In a world full of hate, be a light
When you do somebody wrong, make it right
It's hard to live in colour, when you just see black and white
In a world full of hate, be a light.
-Thomas Rhett
Our Return to Worship Committee has been hard at work developing plans for
gathering together for worship, keeping Manitoba health protocols in mind. Worship
services will now be held on Thursday mornings at 11 a.m. and Sunday mornings at 10
a.m. as well as offering online services through the NKUC website.
Because of limited numbers allowed, pre registration is required. Those attending on
Thursdays need to register by Wednesday and those attending Sunday need to
register by Friday (register by email). Those without e-mail who wish to attend
should call Marvelle McPherson (663-6744) for Thursday services or Peter Latimer
(668-2501) for Sunday services.
Those attending will be checked in at the back door with social distancing in place and
all those attending must wear a mask.
How wonderful it will be to gather again as a community of faith!
Our thoughts and prayers are with our neighbours to the south who are struggling, not only with the pandemic but with riots and chaos related to racial discrimination. We pray that the leaders of the United States will be blessed with understanding and insight into the issues that are confronting their society. Martin Luther King Jr. once said, “Violence as a way of achieving racial justice is both impractical and immoral. It is impractical because it is a descending spiral ending in destruction for all. It is immoral because it thrives on hatred rather than love.” Let us love our neighbours as Jesus taught. Reach out to those friends and relatives and let them know that our thoughts are with them and that they are not alone.
Our spring plant sale was a wonderful success despite health restrictions. Our profit was approximately $2000.00 and reports are that the suppliers were easy to work with and ordering and delivery went smoothly. Thank you to everyone who made this annual event a success.
Our thoughts are with all those who are
struggling with coping with the pandemic.
We especially remember Evelyn Milne and
encourage everyone to keep in touch,
telephone, email or make a social distanced
visit with your neighbours and friends. Let
your voice be the sunshine in their day.

On that note, Tom and Carol Lyons have arrived in Parksville B.C. after a safe journey

bedroom was set up and that the refrigerator was full. They have also found a
church that has warmly welcomed them. Of course, Rykus and Odin are absolutely
thrilled to have Grandma and Grandpa near them again. We wish the entire family
good health and happiness together.

After much consideration, the UCW has made the difficult decision to
postpone monthly meetings until it is safe to gather. It was further
decided to hold a virtual Christmas bazaar. Communication will be sent out at
the beginning of October with regards to this event. We will keep in touch
with our members and look forward to a time we can meet again.

UCW News
Ma Mawi Wi Chi Itata Centre Inc. is a resource organization delivering community
based programs and services working with Indigenous families. They are community
people helping other community people reclaim inherent roles and responsibilities as
Indigenous caregivers and teachers of our children. The name Ma Mawi Wi Chi Itata
translates from Ojibway into “we all work together to help one another.”
And so in light of their mission, the UCW has donated a large selection of hats, mitts,
slippers and baby items to this organization. Also donated were reversible
flannelette baby blankets and quilts (lovingly sewn by Donna Price). Along with these
items, we send our prayers for the health and safety of those who receive them.
Men’s Fellowship News
Our men’s fellowship has continued to be of service to the community in the past
several weeks. They painted three offices at the West Broadway Community
Ministry. Thanks are extended to Ron Fortier, Clayton Gording, Heinz Goetz and Ron
Hutchinson. WBCM staff is most appreciative of this freshening up of their offices.
