“The Spirit” North Kildonan United Church
August 2017
Welcome back! North Kildonan United Church invites everyone to our worship services, programs and activities planned
for the congregation. Sunday school, youth group, men’s club, United Church Women, Bible study, choir
and many other groups will be starting up. Be sure to check the calendar in this newsletter, the weekly
church news and the website to keep informed.
Many thanks to all those who participated in the summer services while Marc was away on holiday. The
music and messages were well planned and enjoyed by everyone who attended. Our thanks to the worship
committee and everyone who came forward to support our services during Marc’s absence. Special thanks
to Rev. Don McIntyre who provided ministry during the month of June.
There are many activities and special events planned for the upcoming year. One exciting event will be
our Quiz Nite – October 6 at North Kildonan Community Club; a fun social event for everyone.
Tickets are now available. Mark your calendars!
If you would like information about our church activities or pastoral care, you are welcome to contact our
minister Rev. Marc Whitehead or the church admin assistant Barb Wiebe at 204-667-7408.
We are a friendly and welcoming congregation!
Breakfast Crew – Applebee’s Pancake Breakfast May 27
Pictured above are a few of the hard working servers bringing out delicious pancake breakfasts to guests arriving at
the Applebee’s restaurant on Regent. Not only were they a smiling and competent group but they knew to keep the coffee coming! Thanks to everyone who helped to start our morning off just right!
WOW! What a wonderful turnout of shoppers. The garage sale was a resounding success even if the weather did not cooperate on the Saturday. Many items were sold and profits realized topped $8000.00. This huge event was successful due to the hard work of the stewardship committee and volunteers. Thanks!
Stop and smell the roses! at the annual plant sale held at NKUC. Our gardens are filled with the
beautiful flowers and plants available at this annual event. Thanks is extended to Lorraine
and Clayton Gording and their crew of volunteers who prepare this annual event for our enjoyment.
Construction Update: Work is progressing on the new lift for North Kildonan
United. This is an exciting time for our congregation and also a
time to be patient during construction and really, isn’t that what
Winnipegers are known for??
It is pleasing to note that many people have adapted to changes
in entry and exit to the church and continue to come to worship in our wonderful space.
Thank you everyone for your continued support.
Sunday School Celebration
A huge thank you to the Christian Education department for providing another successful year
of children’s ministries at North Kildonan United.
From the youngest to the oldest, the children were welcomed and nurtured in God’s love with a
kind and caring staff of teachers. Special thanks to Robin for leading the music ministry and to
Grant and John as administrators.
Providing Christian education to children is one of the most rewarding tasks anyone can pursue.
The children are eager and receptive to learn and the simplest message, be it Noah’s ark or the
Good Samaritan, taught with love and caring, will stay with them always.
And so... we need your help to keep our Sunday school an integral and vital component of North Kildonan
United. Many of our Sunday school leaders have been involved for the past ten years and would like a
change in the manner of how they offer their gifts, therefore leaving vacancies on the teaching staff.
Ideally, a core group of eight Sunday school teachers, working in pairs, would complete the weekly
function of our program. Currently we have a shortfall in this number.
As with many situtations brought to the attention of our congregation, people tend to rise to the
challenge and offer their gifts and service to overcome the issues successfully. We know that the
wonderful people of NKUC will come through to maintain the health and strength of our congregation.
Speak to Grant McMillan, Peter Latimer or Kathy Bertouille about the opportunities in our Christian
Education program. Thank you for your anticipated response.
On June 21, women of North Kildonan United joined together at the Nor-Villa for the annual
June wind-up dinner of the UCW. A delicious
dinner was served and we enjoyed fun games
and wonderful fellowship.
And yes, that is a “man” at our dinner – life
member of the UCW, Jack Armstrong. Jack always makes sure to bring proof of his
membership (note the framed document on
the table).
No need to Jack, we know you are a wonderful
supporter of our group!
The first meeting of the UCW will be on
Monday, September 18 at 7:30 p.m. Barb
Wiebe and Sheron Miller will tell us about
their adventures in Vancouver celebrating
the 55th anniversary of the UCW in Canada.

The 55th anniversary of the United Church Women in Canada was celebrated July 10-14th in Vancouver. Barb Wiebe and Sheron Miller had the opportunity to participate in this event as members of the Conference of Manitoba and Northwestern Ontario. Over 320 women joined women from across Canada, Bermuda, Korea, the United States and Tanzania. With inspirational speakers and amazing music, the event was a wonderful success. Barb and Sheron were fortunate to meet many women to share stories of UCW meetings, programs and goals for the future.
The UCW of North Kildonan United
welcome women to join us for educational programs, inspirational worship, fun and fellowship. You are invited to attend all or a portion of the meeting that is of interest to you. We meet at 7:30 p.m. on the third Monday of each month with afternoon meetings in January and February. Should you wish further information, please contact the church office.

Once upon a time a young mother began attending NKUC with her two children. The children
went to Sunday school and were nurtured and cared for by wonderful teachers. One Sunday morning an appeal went out to the congregation for Sunday school teachers and this mother thought “I think I might like to teach. The teachers are parents too and my children are benefiting from this program.” The Christian Education committee welcomed her and helped to explain the curriculum and how the Sunday morning works. Soon she was well into the teaching game and discovered that she was learning from the Bible lessons too. As the years progressed, this mother grew in her faith and came to understand God’s message for her. She still considers it a privilege to share with the children, love, hope and faith. Listen closely. Do you hear God’s call to service in the church? The opportunity to teach children kindness, sharing and faith cannot be underestimated. Their small minds are eager and willing to see God’s love in action. That action, that love could be you. Please pray about this and consider teaching Sunday school here at NKUC.
