RECTOR’S LETTER
People Are Watching
A number of polls taken in recent years indicate that the number of people seeking a spiritual
dimension to their lives is growing. At the same time, many say that they are not impressed by
organized religion. In other words, the same people who are looking for God say they cannot find
Him in the people of God. Is it possible that we are not doing something right?
It appears that people are attracted to one kind of life or another by where they see it more than what
they read about it. The Bible is a powerful book. As the Word of God, it can and has inspired many
people. Any bookstore has a variety of translations available. But what is going to motivate people to
read any of them unless the people who claim to believe the message printed provide an example of
how it relates to the human condition?
Those who want to be successful sales people are told that they need to know the wants, the needs,
the hopes, and the fears of their clientele. And then they need to respond to them. So who are God’s
clientele? What are the wants, the needs, the hopes, and the fears of those who are seeking God in
their lives?
All we have to do is look around (and in the mirror). Today we have more gadgets that do more
things and more “toys” to peak our imaginations and clutter our garages and basements than at any
other time in history. At the same time, people want something more. They want to be loved and
listened to and cared for. They fear violence and they hope for a world where people can live in
peace and harmony. They want to know they can be forgiven for their failures and shortcomings.
These are God’s clientele.
We who present ourselves as the people of God claim that God can speak to these needs and hopes
and fears. The question is- would the people who are seeking these things see them in us? When the
people who want God, look at those of us who claim to have God, do they see something authentic?
When they look at the people who speak of a God who loves, do they see love? Or do they see
disdain and judgment? When they look at the people who speak about a God who forgives, do they
see forgiveness? Or do they see revenge and resentment?
In the world of sales, it is often said, “It’s the sizzle that sells the steak, not the cow.” The “sizzle” of
Christianity is not found in our worship and the creeds- as important as they are. The “sizzle” is
found in the believers and the things they say and do.
My friends, people are watching us and they are listening to what we say and do. Let’s be authentic.
Let’s not merely talk the talk, let’s walk the walk, too. After all, that’s what Christian disciples do.
Isn’t it?
Peace and love,
John+
