“Real gardeners buy

“Foolin’ Around in the Garden” will be your educational motivator and now the
warmer weather will add to the anticipation of cleaning your beds and checking
new growth. As we are going through the cleanup phase, ask yourself if there are
too many of the same plant, too crowded, and maybe you just want to plant
something new….keep those containers handy and pot them up for our Plant Sale
on May 13th. Something to THINK ABOUT...

What’s In the Garden?
Selecting Trees
Spring (or Fall) is an excellent time to consider adding a new member to
your family. Your tree family that is…
When considering a new tree family member, here are a few questions to
ask:
1. What are my expectations of this tree? Am I hoping for shade,
flowers, fall color, low maintenance, fast growing, etc.
2. What are some of my options and where might I find them?
3. Do I already have a tree like this in my yard or neighborhood? Are
there other options that might be great alternatives to help diversify
our tree canopy.
4. Balled and burlapped, bare root, potted?
5. How big will my tree get, will it have enough space to live out it’s full
life successfully?
6. Are there any construction projects in the near future that might put
this tree in harm’s way? (Seems obvious, but…)
And remember, bigger is not always better when it comes to purchasing
new trees. Larger trees tend to take more time to establish and
experience more severe transplanting shock.
Recipe of the Month Radish & Arugula Crostini with Brie
FROM THE MASTER GARDENER’S KITCHEN: SPRING THOUGHTS ~ REVELING IN
RADISHES!
Sharon Kuttler ~ Master Gardener
When I first think of what to plant, harvest, and enjoy from my early spring garden it is always radishes! With the final frost date for our area last year (calculated from Farmer’s Almanac website: http://www.almanac.com/gardening/frostdates/IA/Dubuque ) at April 15th it’s time to think about planting!
From the Iowa State Extension Office information, “radishes can be planted as soon as the ground can be worked properly… and when feasible planting can begin in…mid-April in the northern counties. Successive plantings can be made every 7 to 10 days through May, and several plantings can be made in late summer (mid-August to late September) for a fall crop.” (http://www.extension.iastate.edu/article/yard-and-garden-proper-spring-planting-windows-garden-vegetables)
Historically I have enjoyed radishes as a ‘plant-pull-eat’ process without much other fanfare, however this year some interesting riffs with radishes have caught my attention.
The first was seeing an online recipe photograph using a beautiful variety of ‘watermelon radish’ (aka Roseheart, Chinese Red Meat) with a white exterior and dark pink interior. I quickly sent off my order to www.seedsavers.org and plan to use them for this recipe: Radish & Arugula Crostini with Brie.
Another interesting preparation for radishes is roasting. While I have never met a roasted vegetable that I didn’t like, I had never even considered roasted radishes!
“Brief high-heat roasting mellows a radish’s peppery flavor and turns it into a whole new root vegetable. Using the radish tops adds color and amps up the radish flavor.” This would be a great side dish for roasted pork loin or leg of lamb:

Ingredients Radish and Arugula Crostini with Brie
6 ounce loaf French bread, cut diagonally in 16- ½ inch slices Cooking spray 1 ½ cup sliced radishes 1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice ¼ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper ¼ teaspoon salt 4 ounces Brie cheese (about ½ cup) 2 cups baby arugula leaves
Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Arrange bread slices on a baking sheet; coat with cooking spray. Bake at 400 degrees for 5 minutes or until golden brown and toasted; cool.
Combine radishes and next 4 ingredients in medium bowl and toss to coat.
Spread each bread slice with about 2 teaspoons cheese; top with a single layer of arugula and a layer of radishes.
