Paulton Schools Paulton Schools have served the local community for well over 100 years, the Junior School moving to its present site in 1972 and the adjacent Infant School two years later. The schools enjoy extensive grounds comprising a playing field and surfaced play areas. The area is used widely by the children throughout the year to support their studies. A covered heated swimming pool, managed by the Parish Council through Paulton Swimming Pool Committee, is situated next to the site and all children have swimming lessons throughout the year.

Paulton Infants' School and Paulton Junior School are entirely independent. Each school has its own Headteacher and Governing Body. However, the Governors and staff are totally committed to the notion of education as a continuum - beginning at home and progressing from phase to phase with planned continuity. The Infant School fosters strong links with home and local playgroups. The Junior School liaises with all local secondary schools and the special school.

The staffs of both schools work closely together: they share curriculum discussions and In Service Training days; the children frequently join together for special events; we have a single PTA working for both schools.

The Junior School caters for about 360 children between the ages of seven and eleven (Key Stage 2 - Year 3, Year 4, Year 5, Year 6). The school is divided into 11 classes.

Children transfer to Secondary Education in the September following their eleventh birthday. Details regarding this transfer are sent out during the final year at Junior School. Children usually go on to Somervale, Norton Hill or Writhlington Secondary Schools.

The admission level for the Infant School for 2017/18 is 90 and for the Junior School is 90. Class sizes presently vary between 28 and 32 depending on the size of the year group. Infant classes do not exceed 30 at any time.

The time spent on teaching during a normal week is 23 hours 30 minutes for junior aged children. For infant aged children the teaching time is 22 hours. This excludes Collective Worship, registrations and break times.

The Aims of Paulton Junior School

Children, their needs and interests, are at the heart of school communities. Whilst there are features in educational provision and school buildings which are common to all schools, individual establishments have a unique nature. This uniqueness is to be found in the people - children and adults - who work there, and in the care and respect they show each other, in their attitude to the tasks they perform, and what they see as valuable. The actions and attitudes of each member of the community - child and adult - affect the quality of life within the school, the achievement of its aims, and the effectiveness of its work. Our school offers each child a broad general education, developing individual skills and talents so that every child may achieve the best of which he or she is capable. At the same time, we aim to give the children a strong and clear sense of their own worth. We create a sympathetic climate, which allows everyone within our school to celebrate the success of others and provide caring support when needed. Children are expected, however young, to take the degree of responsibility appropriate to their stage of maturity, for themselves, for others, and for their environment. Within this framework we aim:-

To keep children's learning at the heart of all our thoughts and actions.

To provide the opportunity for all our children to achieve academic excellence

within a broad and balanced curriculum.

To create an ethos which nurtures self-belief, independence and a sense of

respect for others

To ensure that our school is a happy, safe, supportive and secure place

in which to learn.

To create a stimulating learning environment.

To develop strong and productive partnerships with parents and the

wider school community

To have high expectations in all areas of school life.

To prepare children for the future.

CURRICULUM

During both Key Stages a considerable part of each week is devoted to the core subjects of English, Maths, Science, RE and Computing. Within the New National Curriculum foundation subjects of Design Technology, History, Geography, Music, Art and Physical Education topics are chosen to stimulate and motivate the children, and work is carefully structured around those themes. Personal, Social, Health and Moral Education is also taught and there is a theme of citizenship running through the whole curriculum. Sometimes these subjects will be taught separately.

At the end of the Key Stage in Year 6, children are assessed (SATs). A measure of attainment is provided for each child in those subjects assessed. However, throughout their education at Paulton Junior School children are assessed formally and informally. This enables the teacher to plan work accordingly, to ensure children are working to their ability.

ENGLISH

Speaking and Listening At Paulton Junior School we actively promote 'speaking and listening' as the foundation of all effective language work. We support this in encouraging children to share and discuss their ideas through partner talk, presenting and debating across all subjects. We also seek to develop language skills and narrative structure through story telling. Reading Both schools use a wide range of tried and tested methods to give children a lifelong interest in books and the skills to become fluent, independent and enthusiastic readers. As parents, you will be invited to help your child achieve this goal. Children will bring books home and you will be provided with a reading record to ensure effective contact between school and home. Within the school we have an extensive library where children are able to borrow books on a weekly basis.

Writing Children are led through a structured programme which balances the need to encourage them to explore their own thoughts and purposes for writing, with the promotion of crucial writing skills across a range of genres. They are taught to generate ideas through Talk For Writing, shared and guided writing, produce a draft, edit it in accordance with the rules of grammar and spelling they have learned and then, if it is to be shared with others, to publish it. Handwriting There is a clearly defined progression from the first attempt at forming letters to the development of an independent cursive style. Handwriting is taught discretely on a weekly basis and further embedded through modeling by staff in all areas of writing. From Year 3 all children will be taught the appropriate joins in order to write in a modified style based on the Berol scheme.

MATHEMATICS Following the New National Curriculum, we place particular emphasis on a daily maths lesson that is carefully planned, purposeful and has well-directed teaching and learning. This enables a more creative and practical approach to learning and assessment. We teach our children to be confident and competent in maths. This requires an understanding of the number system, a repertoire of computational skills and an ability to solve number problems in a variety of contexts. Maths also demands practical understanding of the ways in which information is gathered by counting and measuring and is presented in graphs, diagrams, charts and tables. All children are introduced to learning a variety of progressive methods so that they can be successful at all four operations; addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. There will be opportunities for parents to learn about the expectations for their children and ways they can support them at home (a parent guide is available on our website).

SCIENCE The children are encouraged to observe, explore and question and, in so doing, develop an increasing knowledge and understanding of the processes of life, man's influence on the Earth, natural and man-made materials and natural phenomena such as electricity, magnetism, light and sound. We place particular importance on investigational science, giving the children plenty of opportunities to work practically and make decisions at every stage of an investigation.

COMPUTING Our school is extremely well resourced for IT equipment with 80 laptops, 40 iPads and an interactive whiteboard in every classroom. There are a vast number of networked computers all of which have filtered internet access. The school also has a range of digital imaging equipment including scanners, cameras and a visualiser which is used to increase the quality of teaching and learning. These facilities support all aspects of the curriculum. We are continually adding to our range of software programmes, which encompass word processing facilities, data handling, simulations, problem solving games, picture making and design, music and graphics. We also have a number of programmes designed to support children with Special Needs. DESIGN TECHNOLOGY

Children are given the opportunity to develop their designing and making skills using a variety of media. We encourage independent thinking, creativity and curiosity to find solutions to problems. PHYSICAL EDUCATION

This area of the curriculum includes games, gymnastics and athletic activities, movement and dance and swimming. The different areas of activity offer various kinds of learning experience. Children will work in competitive and co-operative contexts and be given the opportunity to develop control and management of body movement, while exploring expressive and artistic possibilities. Curriculum coaching is often provided within each year group. Providing expertise from specialist staff can benefit and enable children to develop their skills even further. Our school places a high priority on Physical Education and actively seeks to enrich each child's education by offering a wide range of extra-curricular physical activities. In addition to this, we attend a huge range of competitive sporting events against other schools locally, at County level, National level and even Internationally!

THE ARTS The expressive and performing arts are an important aspect of the children's work in school and opportunities are given to acquire the skills and techniques unique to a variety of media and disciplines while enjoying the exploration of individual ideas. Frequently all the arts - music, design, drama and dance are brought together in group, class or school productions. These are often performed for a school audience and occasionally for a wider public. MUSIC Children are encouraged to develop both instrumental and composing skills. There are

opportunities for children to learn to play a musical instrument, using BANES music

services, to take part in music festivals and be an audience to professional artists invited

into the schools.

HISTORY AND GEOGRAPHY

In Humanities, our children are encouraged to reflect upon and develop their own sense of time and place. They will compare this with what has come before them and similarly, possible developments for the future. Children will be encouraged to consider their place in the wider world as well as the time, place and cultures of others. Both History and Geography will allow children to develop a set of transferable skills to be used across the curriculum including: investigating sources, mapping skills and sustainable development.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION Religious Education forms an integral part of the school curriculum. The subject is taught in accordance with the Agreed Syllabus which the Local Education Authority has drawn up. Parents may ask to withdraw their children from Religious Education. Most parents are concerned that education should include personal and social development and we fully support this view. The programme for Religious Education provides opportunities in classroom and in school assemblies for each child to explore his/her own unique identity and to enter imaginatively into other people's experience. Children are exposed to broadly based Christian teaching and within that framework are taught to respect other views and cultures.

SWIMMING

Children in all year groups at Paulton Junior School have the opportunity to take part in swimming lessons. With a pool adjacent to the school it is an opportunity not to be missed. The cost of this is currently met by the school. Throughout the school year we organise a series of school swimming galas, for each year group, to which parents are invited.

HOMEWORK

Homework is given regularly to all children. Year 3, 4, 5 and 6 are given spellings related to written work, some number work and reading. It is also requested that on occasion work is finished or research completed in preparation for class based activities. A book is provided for the children to complete their work and a home school reading record is provided. Homework in English or Maths is given weekly, on Monday for return on Friday. In addition to this all classes will be given 'Open Homework Projects' throughout the year. Homework is displayed on the Year Group page of the website.

EXTRA CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES

For Junior children there are clubs after school and during the lunch break. These clubs reflect the commitment and expertise of the teaching staff and all children are encouraged to take part in these activities. All clubs are free of charge, except where professional coaching is brought into school. We currently run in excess of 35 clubs per week, which we believe is the most offered by any school in the Local Education Authority. Your child will be given a clubs list early in Term 1, 3 and 5.

THE SCHOOL COUNCIL

The school has an elected council made up of one boy and one girl from each class. These children form a council of 22 members who meet with staff representatives to look at ways of developing the school. Children can make comments and suggestions to their council representatives via class based suggestions boxes. The school council organises its own fundraising events and is one aspect of the schools citizenship programme.

SCHOOL BOOK SHOP

There is a weekly Book Club in the School Hall on a Friday at 3.10pm where children pay a small amount each week and save up to buy a book of their choice.

Admission to Paulton Junior School

The majority of children transfer to the school directly from Paulton Infants School. The appropriate forms are given to parents during the last year at infant school. Children transferring to the Junior School are invited in on several occasions during the Summer Term to meet the teachers and to familiarise themselves with their classrooms and the school building in general. Year 3 teachers visit the Infants' School to liaise with Year 2 teachers to ensure a happy and confident start to Key Stage 2 for every child. Year 2 parents are invited to a meeting during the Summer Term to introduce staff who will be working with their children and to be informed of expectations and school/parent partnership. Parents of children transferring from other schools are asked to contact the school. The Headteacher will be pleased to arrange an appointment to discuss admission either at the beginning or during the school year.

SCHOOL HOURS The school day begins at 8.40am. The Lunch break is 12.15pm to 1.10pm. Lessons finish at 3.00pm and children will be dismissed from school after this time. We encourage children to arrive just prior to 8.40am. We cannot take responsibility for any child arriving on site before 8.30am.

We expect children to be punctual for the beginning of the school day. Registers are closed at 9.00am. Schools are now required by law to record late arrivals. (Any child arriving after the register closure time should report to the school office where a register is kept for the purpose). ABSENCE If your child needs to be absent from school, please let the school office know the reason on the first day of absence by 9.00am. You can leave a message on the school answer phone. If you do this then you will not need to write a letter as well. If your child has a hospital or dental appointment a copy of the appointment letter will be required to keep on our attendance files. Please do not email school as certain email addresses can be blocked and we may not get the information. Family holidays in Term Time will not be authorised. Please see our guidance on Family Holidays. Your child's absence will be authorised for illness and medical appointments only. If your child is frequently absent the Children Missing Education Officer is informed and will visit parents to offer advice. CHILD SAFETY Since the schools are responsible for the safety of your child during the hours of schooling, no child will be allowed to leave the school grounds between 8.40am and 3.00pm apart from those who go home for lunch. If it is necessary for a child to leave during the day, a note or telephone message to the school office is essential. Children will not be allowed to leave the school premises during the school day unaccompanied. Security devices fitted to all external doors in both Schools ensure that no unauthorised visitor can gain admittance and that all visitors are screened. Parents/Carers calling at school at times other than the usual start and finish time are requested to report to the main Reception. Over 450 children attend the two schools on site, and, in the interests of all the children’s safety, parents are requested not to drive into Plumptre Close and certainly NEVER beyond the school gates AT ANY TIME or park in the turning circle or outside the gates. Some of our pupils are transported by taxi, for their safety please do not park in the taxi/bus stop area outside the gates.

As part of our healthy schools initiative we strongly encourage children to walk or use their bikes and scooters to school. To ensure their safety children are required to dismount their bike or scooter at the main school gate and walk down to the playground. To avoid a serious accident children are not allowed to ride around the carpark area. Dogs must be kept in the car park and not walked through the playground.

PARENTS AND SCHOOL

We believe that an active and supportive partnership between home and school is an

essential ingredient for a successful education. Parents are always welcome in school and

are encouraged to discuss briefly any matter with class teachers or the Head teacher at the

end of the school day. For longer discussions a mutually convenient appointment may be

made with the class teacher or Head teacher.

Keeping you informed Website, our website at www.paultonjuniorschool.co.uk has all the latest news and information for the whole school community Newsletters, informing parents of events and dates, are sent out regularly and are available on our website. The letters are numbered, starting at the beginning of each school year. Reference copies are kept in school and are available on request. Open Door Friday allows all parents to come into School every Friday at 3.10pm and look at their children’s work. Texting Service, we are able to keep parents informed of the very latest developments in school and we text you with positive news about your child's learning progress or behaviour. Curriculum information booklets, at the beginning of terms 1, 3 and 5 a parents curriculum information booklet will be sent home. This booklet outlines the learning objectives for your child for the coming 2 terms. It is intended to allow you to keep up with what your child is doing at school, and to support this learning where possible. Parent-Teacher Consultations, in order to keep parents informed of their children's progress, and to set targets for their learning in the future, parent-teacher consultations are held every other term. Our school provides opportunities throughout the school year when parents can discuss their child's progress with the class teacher. These meetings take place during the evening in order to offer the time and privacy for a constructive meeting. During this consultation the class teacher will discuss targets in Literacy and Numeracy with you and your child. You will also have the opportunity to discuss your child's progress and view his or her work. If you have any concerns or questions at any time throughout the school year please feel free to speak to your child's teacher, if you believe a longer meeting is needed please make an appointment to see the member of staff. At the end of each academic year a written report is produced by the class teacher which outlines progress in all areas of school life, and sets targets for the core subjects. The report also includes details of current levels of attainment in English, Maths and Science. Parents are also invited to join their children at various times of the year for special events, productions, concerts, class assemblies, sports days and exhibitions.

Parent Helpers

We are always delighted to hear from any parents who can contribute to the life of the school. This might be by coming in to work as a parental volunteer, hearing children read for example, or to offer any practical skills you may, for example sports coaching or helping to maintain our planted areas. We are trying to build a database of people who are willing to help in school, and the particular skills they are prepared to offer. In order to become a volunteer helper, or register a particular skill please complete the Parental Volunteer Form and return it to the school office.

We really do rely on the good will and expertise of parents to help us with various projects both in and out of the classroom environment. It may be that we never need to call on your area of knowledge, but it would be really useful to know who is able, and prepared to help out if we are ever in a position of need. Whether you are able to offer practical skills away from the classroom, or are simply keen to help in a classroom we would love to hear from you. In order to become a volunteer helper, or register a particular skill you are prepared to make available to the school please complete the Parental Volunteer Form and return it to the school office.

Parent Teacher Association (PTA) Every parent automatically becomes a member of the PTA when his or her child enters the school. The PTA works extremely hard to raise money for both schools. This money then helps us to buy resources and equipment which may otherwise be beyond our means. It also serves as a key part of our school community through organising social events which bring the whole community together. We are extremely grateful to all those involved in the PTA for their hard work and commitment. Over the years we have re-stocked the school library with the most up-to-date books for children to enjoy, purchased iPads for children to use in class and more recently we have purchased an outdoor classroom. A school library plays a great role in the life of a student so this year with the help of the PTA we plan to extend and re-furbish our library area to create an amazing space for our children

SCHOOL UNIFORM We have high expectations for our children and school uniform is an obvious symbol that children share these expectations, and have a pride in belonging to our school community. We therefore set a clear expectation that uniform will be worn. Extremes of fashion are neither acceptable nor appropriate for school either in clothes, footwear, or hairstyle. Hair should be cut in an appropriate style for school e.g. no Mohican styles or patterns shaved in to the hair. Shoes worn to school should be appropriate. High heels and 'flip-flops' are not safe and should not be worn in school. Training shoes may be worn for PE but must not be worn in place of shoes as they can become an expensive and inappropriate fashion statement for some children. Any mobile phones must be handed to the school office at the start of the day and collected at home time. Phones are not allowed to remain with children during the school day.

CHARGING POLICY

In accordance with the 1988 Education Act, school governors have agreed a Charging Policy for each school.

The policy states that whenever an activity involving parental contributions is proposed:-

a) there will be no obligation for parents to contribute towards the cost.

b) pupils will not be treated differently according to whether or not their parents

make any contribution, however, the school reserves the right to cancel any proposed activity if parents do not support it with contributions.

SCHOOL VISITS The children have an opportunity during the course of the year to visit places of educational interest. The visits are designed to widen the children's experience and normally relate directly to work currently being undertaken in the classroom. Residential weeks are normally held for Year 5 and for Year 6 children, where the cost of each visit is kept to a minimum. However, these visits can only proceed if parents are willing to contribute.

INSURANCE ON SCHOOL VISITS

We are asked by the LA to bring to your attention that no special insurance arrangements are normally made for school visits: the situation is the same as that when pupils are undertaking other school activities i.e.:-

Personal Accident Additional Costs

Bath & N.E. Somerset Council does not insure the third part liability of pupils although it does insure its legal liability in respect of claims received from, or on behalf of, pupils for personal injury or damage to their property. Pupils' Personal Property Bath & N.E. Somerset Council does not accept responsibility for or insure the personal property of pupils. Bath & N.E. Somerset Council cannot be of financial assistance in connection with losses resulting from cancellation, delay, illness or any other cause.

Parents who consider that insurance cover for their children is required are advised to make their own arrangements. Insurance is taken out for the Year 5 and 6 residential visits.
