JESUS’ PARABLES

WHY DID JESUS TEACH IN PARABLES?

Compared to His earlier teaching during the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus's turn to parables might seem odd. He'd used clear instruction to teach His followers how to live and about the Kingdom of God, and He'd exhibited the Kingdom in a tangible way through His miracles. But suddenly, when the crowds come to hear Him, He hops into a boat and speaks in parables, stories about sowing seeds and gathering wheat (Matthew 13).

Jesus spoke in parables to make the Kingdom of God more easily understood by the people. Often times when trying to explain something, using a story to illustrate the point is the most effective way to communicate the information. When the disciples ask Him why, since they obviously noticed the change, His answer may seem even more astonishing: “To you it has been granted to know the mysteries of the Kingdom of Heaven, but to them it has not been granted” (Matthew 13:11). In other words, the parables are meant to divide the crowd. While this may seem as if Jesus denied some people access, the difference He means is not in the message—but in the response.

The parables themselves present clear stories from everyday events that many in the crowd would recognize. Jesus did not code His teaching to prevent some people from understanding, since all equally would understand the imagery. All those gathered there certainly comprehended the aspects of the stories related to their everyday lives. Instead, His teaching divided the listeners into two groups based on their own responses. Which character do we identify with and why?

His miracles had attracted many, and others had perhaps been astonished by His earlier teaching. But the parables themselves, just as in the story of the seed falling on various places (Matthew 13:3-9), revealed the true nature of their responses and their real decisions. Those committed to the Kingdom of God would seek and find further understanding. But those uncommitted—perhaps listening only because of the initial excitement—would reject the teaching as unintelligible.

Comparado con su enseñanza anterior durante el Sermón del Monte, el cambio repentino de Jesús de utilizar parábolas puede parecer extraño. Había usado instrucciones claras para enseñarles a sus seguidores cómo vivir y sobre el Reino de Dios, y había exhibido el Reino de una manera tangible a través de sus milagros. Pero de repente, cuando las multitudes llegan a escucharlo, se sube a un bote y habla en parábolas, historias sobre sembrar semillas y recoger trigo (Mateo 13).

Jesús habló en parábolas para hacer que el Reino de Dios sea más fácilmente entendido por la gente. Jesús no codificó su enseñanza para evitar que algunas personas entiendan, ya que todos entenderían igualmente las imágenes. Todos los reunidos allí ciertamente comprendieron los aspectos de las historias relacionadas con su vida cotidiana. En cambio, su enseñanza dividió a los oyentes en dos grupos según sus propias respuestas. ¿Con cual personaje nos identificamos y por qué?

Sus milagros habían atraído a muchos, y otros quizás habían quedado asombrados por sus enseñanzas anteriores. Pero las mismas parábolas, al igual que en la historia de la semilla que cae en varios lugares (Mateo 13: 3-9), revelaron la verdadera naturaleza de sus respuestas y sus decisiones. Aquellos comprometidos con el Reino de Dios buscarían y encontrarían más entendimiento. Pero aquellos no comprometidos, tal vez escuchando solo por la emoción inicial, rechazarían la enseñanza como ininteligible.

T o describe the kingdom of heaven, Jesus turns again to his number one teaching tool: parables. First, wheat

grows alongside weeds that threaten to choke it. Next, a large mustard plant grows from a tiny seed. In the final one, a pinch of yeast leavens a huge batch of flour. In each parable something seemingly insubstantial grows into something extraordinarily large. The full-grown mustard bush can accommodate a whole flock of birds. The amount of leavened bread is enough to feed over a hundred people. Despite the weeds, enough wheat is collected at harvest to fill a barn. But why leave the weeds in the first place? Wisdom gives a hint, telling us that God’s leniency and clemency give hope to the sinner, who knows that repentance is possible. Therefore, the weeds are allowed to grow until harvest, giving every opportunity for repentance, for mercy. In our weakness, Saint Paul writes, the Holy Spirit comes to our aid. We are able to resist the weeds of temptation and harm. In the end, the kingdom of God continues to grow, albeit imperceptibly, fighting the weeds, relying on God’s grace, eventually shining like the sun. How can you flourish among the weeds? How can the Holy Spirit help?

P ara describir el reino de los cielos, Jesús recurre nuevamente a su herramienta de enseñanza favorita:

las parábolas. Primero, el trigo crece junto a la hierba mala que amenaza con sofocarlo. Luego, una gran planta de mostaza crece de una pequeña semilla. En el último, una pizca de levadura leuda un gran lote de harina. En cada parábola, algo aparentemente insustancial se convierte en algo

extraordinariamente grande. El gran árbol de mostaza puede acomodar a toda una bandada de pájaros. La cantidad de pan con levadura es suficiente para alimentar a más de cien personas. They will receive the sacraments of Baptism, Communion, and Confirmation that we were not able to administer at this year’s Easter Vigil. We pray for them as they continue their faith journey and become members of the Catholic Church.

(If a parent has yet to turn in the Sponsor Eligibility Form for a teen that will be receiving Confirmation this October, please hold on to your form. New instructions will be given at the end of July.)

All registrations and re-registrations for next year are currently postponed until we are able to evaluate our parish settings according to CDC Guidelines.
