education boards simply to assist the young get a good education and hence a secure foundation for their lives. While the issue of education and literacy seems to be more important among the underprivileged as it could provide the elusive ticket out of poverty, I have found enormous challenges among all the various economic status of our societies. The more affluent families are afflicted by issues of drug abuse, mobile phone and social media addictions, delinquencies and even teenage pregnancies do not spare them either.

Rotary has played a big role in supporting basic education and literacy and I have been privileged to visit many projects targeting literacy in our District. Some examples that come to mind are provision of a library and a reading room for slum children in Kuwinda slums by Rc Karen, renovation of classrooms for children by RC Kirinyaga and RC Thika West, supply of desks to schools by RC Bungoma, RC Kwale, RC Malindi and RC Syokimau. I have also visited schools in Korogocho whose performance has improved incredibly after RC Nairobi East started an award system where the top students got a cash award and the best student got a bursary for free secondary education.

Many clubs have engaged the youth by setting up interact clubs in schools and RC Wau has set up 5 new interact clubs this year , RC Voi has set up 7 new interact clubs and RC Malindi has also forwarded documents for some 5 new clubs for charter. I am aware that very many rotary clubs have sponsored interact clubs and I am indeed grateful as all these offer excellent mentorship vehicles for these fragile children and that may be all they need to improve and take their work seriously. All these interact clubs offer support for basic education and literacy as well as instilling concern for the welfare of others at an early age.

We have had some very successful book donation campaign in Kenya in the past and close to 500 schools have benefitted, we are pursuing another such exercise this year as well.

It my conclusion that any collaboration between the Rotary and the youth in schools offers support to basic education and literacy and the setting up of an interact clubs, WASH programs, renovations, mentorships, book donations, speaking competitions, career talks, tree planting exercises and others all play a role in ensuring a more educated and hopeful youth, a key ingredient for a prosperous future for all us. I urge all Rotary clubs to keep on engaging the youth and in the process supporting basic education and literacy.

President Costa asked that one tree be planted for each of the 1.1 million members that Rotary had at the time. We Rotarians, as is our want, did better, planting nearly 35 million trees by the end of the Rotary year.

International Convention in Portland, Oregon, then President-elect Paulo

Costa told the gathered Rotarians, “The hour has come for Rotary to raise its voice, to claim its leadership, and to rouse all Rotarians to an honorable crusade to protect our natural resources.” He declared a Rotary initiative to “Preserve Planet Earth,” asking Rotarians to make environmental issues part of their service agenda: to plant trees, to work to keep our air and water clean, and to protect the planet for future generations. President Costa asked that one tree be planted for each of the 1.1 million members that Rotary had at the time. We Rotarians, as is our want, did better, planting nearly 35 million trees by the end of the Rotary year. Many of those trees are likely still flourishing today, absorbing carbon from the environment, releasing oxygen, cooling the air, improving soil quality, providing habitat and food for birds, animals, and insects, and yielding a host of other benefits. Unfortunately, while those trees have kept on doing good for the environment, Rotary as a whole has not carried its environmental commitment forward. That is why, at the start of this year, I followed Paulo Costa’s example and asked Rotary to plant at least one tree for every Rotary member. My goal was to achieve a good beyond the considerable benefits that those 1.2 million (or more!) trees would

themselves bring. It is my hope that by planting trees, Rotarians will renew their interest in, and attention to, an issue that we must put back on the Rotary agenda: the state of our planet. Environmental issues are deeply entwined in every one of our areas of focus and cannot be dismissed as not Rotary’s concern. Pollution is affecting health across the globe: More than 80 percent of people in urban areas breathe unsafe air, a number that rises to 98 percent in low- and middle-income countries. If current trends continue, by 2050 oceans are expected to contain more plastics by weight than fish. And rising temperatures are well-documented: Global annual average temperatures increased by about 2 degrees F (1.1 degrees C) from 1880 through 2015. That this change was caused by humans is not a subject of scientific debate, nor is the likelihood of vast economic and human disruption if the trend continues unchecked. Need for action is greater than ever – and so is our ability to have a real impact. As past UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon put it, “There can be no Plan B, because there is no Planet B.” Our planet belongs to all of us, and to our children, and to their children. It is for all of us to protect, and for all of us in Rotary to make a difference..

(Adapted from my talk at the Coast Region Rotary Foundation Dinner March 2018)

Fellow Rotarians, as we approach the high water mark of our Rotary District activities that is the District Conference and Assembly in Naivasha in April, allow me throw some light on something many Rotarians do not know or do not notice.

Did you know that the Rotary insignia/pin you wear says whether you have the rank of a General, a Colonel, Major, Corporal or Private? Did you know that these insignia/pins indicate whether you are playing the World cup, English Premier of a local football club? Did you know that it says whether you are playing the US Masters, the US open, PGA, Pro or amateur?

Did you know that it tells what class you are in the Rotary school- Foundation class, junior school, High School, university or doctorate?

Let me begin by saying that we all have to start somewhere and belong somewhere. However, like in life, we are challenged to grow from Foundation class, Junior School to University and onwards. The problem I see is that many Rotarians have refused to grow in their support to our Rotary Foundation and remain stunted in the same class/league/rank for far too long! For the most part this is because nobody have explained to them the need and the avenue to grow.

Many years ago, I did not know there was any support better than supporting Polio- I supported Polio. I wore my

“End Polio Now” pin with the most pride (and I still wear it with my other pins!). I then discovered that at this level I was only a Private in the army! I was only in foundation class. I needed to grow to a Corporal and better. I learnt that a Paul Harris Fellowship (PHF) was one of the most respected Rotary insignia/pin denoting that one was playing at a higher league. I became a PHF! Once in a while I still wear this insignia/pin! I soon I realized that the PHF pin indicates that one has turned from amateur golfer to a Professional one in Rotary growth! I played the pro-league for years- from level 1 to Multiple Paul Harris Fellow. I enjoyed the little diamonds that would indicate the increasing higher levels of the league I was playing. Few Rotarians realize that the PHF pin in its many variations is a great measure or growth in Rotary.

No sooner had I become lieutenant at Multiple PHF levels did I realize that it was possible (and immensely enjoyable) to be a Captain or a Major! I needed to play a higher league than my home team. I aspired to be a Major Donor! Everything in life begins with an aspiration. The Law of Attraction works as a natural law of nature! I became a Major Donor not long ago!

I will perhaps pause here and explain what I am driving at.

Many Rotarians wear all manner of Rotary pins/insignia not knowing that they speak much of which class in the Rotary school they are at. The problem is not that we should not be in a given class. The problem is that many of us

do not know that we need to promote ourselves to the next class!

I am not sure whether I will ever reach the level of a General in the Rotary army.

I am not sure whether I will play the Masters or US Open in Rotary golf.

I am not sure if I will play World Cup or Premier league in the Rotary football leagues.

I am not sure if I will obtain a doctorate in my Rotary school.

The one thing I am sure about is that I aspire to be better every year! I aspire to grow. That is why I signed up to the Paul Harris Society (PHS) thus invoking the Law of Attraction on myself with great success! That is why I signed a Bequest in favor Rotary!

Each man or woman should support Rotary according to his ability. Far too many of us invoke the Law of Attraction in reverse - thinking we do not have enough or we cannot afford.

Every Rotarian has enough to give- each according to his means.

Give as much and as many times as you can to the Rotary Foundation and open for yourself an understanding of the supernatural effects of giving.

Next time we meet tell me (or let me see by your Insignia/pin) that you are playing a superior Rotary league!

Great times await us in Naivasha this month as we experience the much-awaited District Conference &

Assembly from April 19th to 21st. We have put together a very exciting program, that is inclusive for everyone. Registration of conference delegates will open from 9am on April 19th, at Enashipai resort and spa, and open till late that evening.

Our program starts on Thursday, April 19th, when we all visit our DCA 2018 partner project at Nyamathi Secondary school at 3pm. DCA 2018 is supporting this school by funding the school science laboratory. The laboratory will be officially opened by the RIPPR. We urge all delegates to join us for this distinguished occasion.

From Nyamathi school, we shall all head for the DG s cocktail which will take place at the Masada Hotel from 5pm till late. Rotary Clubs of Naivasha, Nairobi East and Nakuru will host us to what we expect to be a splendid evening. This is the ultimate social forum for the conference. Come meet other fellow Rotarians while you enjoy a bite, drink and music….and network.

Friday morning at 8am we have the opening ceremony which will be graced by the Nakuru County Governor and other senior officials. We are expecting great speakers both international and local to inspire us on topics focusing on key

areas of Rotary. Dress code for Friday conference is Formal – Theme tie and theme scarf. Friday evening will see us unwind in a “Cultural night” themed dinner. Start getting your traditional dress ready. Special prizes for the best dressed persons, as per the theme of the night.

Saturday will be another full day of activities. We shall have three breakout sessions, one of them being for the first-time conference attendees. Our incoming DG, Jeff, will unveil his goals for the coming year. Assembly activities will take place on this day. Also, the DG will award the achievers of the 2017/2018 year. Dress code for Saturday day conference and assembly is – Casual; Club T-shirt or Club uniform. The evening program will have the Gala dinner with music and dance. Thereafter, for those still feeling strong, we shall go celebrate and socialize at the Waves Disco, still at Enashipai, till late hours.

We are forming a new Rotary Club in Karatina, Nyeri, Kenya. We decided to join in with the other

Rotarians in making a difference in our community which had never heard of Rotary before.

Here’s how...

When I challenged the prospective members of The Rotary Club of Karatina (In Formation) to the Rotary Sunshine Rally, I did not know how well or bad it would go, I was only full of optimism.

The Rotary Sunshine Rally is a day organized by Rotary Clubs in Nairobi and its environments, aimed at adding sunshine to children with special needs.

The children are treated to good food and entertainment all day.

RC Karatina (In Formation) took the challenge well. We hit the ground running, even though we had just a few weeks of planning left, we were motivated to make a difference. We started by creating a database of the children with special needs. It only took us two days and the whole special needs fraternity in Mathira Sub-County, Nyeri, had known of a ‘group of people’ looking to give the children a fun day.

When we set out to look for buses and sponsors to help the dream come

true, we caused a stir, a good stir in the region. What was initially just a call for help doubled into a recruitment drive. For the next two weeks after the first contact, we spent most of our time on WhatsApp telling locals what ‘this Rotary’ is and how they could join in to make a difference in our community.

Our efforts bore fruit and we managed to take 150 children with special needs to The Rotary Sunshine Rally, despite being a club In Formation. The Ripple effect is that the prospective members are more than motivated and the pace has been set.

We are thankful to our local Member of Parliament Hon. Rigathi Gachagua, who donated a bus, our mother club RC Nyeri, who supported us all through and all the Sponsors who in their different ways made the day possible for the children.

I am also particularly thankful to Pro-spective Rotarian Nelson Maina who, despite having never heard of Rotary be-fore, took it up and helped us penetrate to the locals.

The Rotary Club of Nanyuki is based in Nanyuki Town that is located in the base of Mt. Kenya and affectionately referred to as “Mwisho wa Reli”. It commenced from humble beginnings to start meeting in September 2017 at the Sportsman’s Arms Hotel thanks in no small part to the efforts of DGSR Monica Mwangi who was moving to Nanyuki and in her own words “couldn’t live without Rotary”.

After weeks of planning the day was finally here. Saturday 20th January 2018 was the day that the newest club

in district 9212, the Rotary Club of Nanyuki was to be officially chartered at the Sportsman’s Arms Hotel in Nanyuki and with no less a person in attendance than the District Governor 2017-2018 Peter Mbui. The Chief Guest was his Excellency the Governor of Laikipia County H.E Ndiritu Muriithi.

in Nanyuki Town that is located in the base of Mt. Kenya and affectionately referred to as “Mwisho wa Reli”. It commenced from humble beginnings to start meeting in September 2017 at the Sportsman’s Arms Hotel thanks in no small part to the efforts of DGSR Monica Mwangi who was moving to Nanyuki and in her own words “couldn’t live without Rotary”.

With just a few members initially the numbers grew over the next few months to the 30 that were finally inducted into the Rotary family on the historic day 20th January 2018. The efforts of Rotarian Njeri Macheru…….the “queen of happy”…….in inviting many of her friends to be charter members of the RC of Nanyuki must be recognised. She seems to have the knack of choosing people with Rotary in their genes because all of them are now strong and committed Rotarians.

As is usual with DG Peter he arrived on time and was ready

to commence the business of the day. We started with the planting of two commemorative trees within the hotel grounds led by President Janet Macharia of the Rotary Club of Karura the mother club, and President Nominee Rotary Club of Nanyuki, Joe Wainaina and other Rotarians in attendance. These trees had been donated by Rotarian Miriam a Rotarian from a club in Germany that had fellowshipped with us a few weeks to the charter.

We had in attendance over 100 Rotarians representing many Rotary clubs across the country and in no particular order, Nyeri, Embu, Muranga, Ruiru, Nairobi East, Thika, Thika West, Karura, Nairobi Muthaiga North, Meru, Maralal, Milimani Thika Road (in formation) and so on led by several Assistant Governors, Club Presidents and Chairs of various District committees that all assisted in the pinning of the 30 new Rotarians from RC Nanyuki.

The President Nominee gave his speech that introduced the soon to be inducted RC Nanyuki Rotarians and then outlined his agenda for the year as President whose terms ends in 2019 concluding by thanking all those assembled including fellow club members and our mother club RC Karura for making this day possible.

The Chief Guest H.E Ndiritu Muriithi gave a glowing speech recognizing that Rotary seemed to have plucked a leaf straight from his development agenda on the 6 areas of Rotary focus and asking for possible partnerships with RC Nanyuki in fulfilling his agenda for Laikipia county.

This was the first charter ceremony of the year for the DG and he was suitably excited and delighted to be officiating as he mentioned in his speech after which a sumptuous dinner was served to those assembled.

The evening ended with song and dance and to the general confirmation that it was a night to remember!

KILIFI ROTARIANS LAUNCH LITERACY SUPPORT PROJECT

More than 200 young people turned out for a Literacy Support project organized by Rotary Club of Kilifi. In partnership with KESHO Organization, Moving the

Goalposts and Kenya National Library Service, the inaugural event featured reading groups, a spelling bee and other academic competitions, as well as a sack race and musical chairs.

All participating schools performed literacy related poems and plays, including Kibarani School for the Deaf, with an education drama presented both in sign language and interpreted for the audience. The Kilifi Library launched the e-Reader digital reading scheme that brings several thousand new books for all ages to the library’s selection.

Rotarians were joined by Rotaractors and Interactors from the area to read to the younger children. They assisted the older ones in reading aloud in their groups. The youngest children were fascinated by the picture books. Older children read newspapers and were enthralled by the world atlases.

According to RCK president Rose Kigathi, “This was a wonderful way to improve reading skills and create better awareness of our local resources to improve literacy levels, including the many resources of our local library. All partners favour making this a regular event.”

Led by Rotarians Dr. Charles Mbogo and Pauline Lowe, Rotary Club of Kilifi was instrumental in fundraising to open the library in 2002. The Club has organized book drives for the facility and in 2010 mobilized resources to establish a cyber café there.

Rotary Club of Kilifi supports a number of Education initiatives throughout the year including financial assistance for deserving students in partnership with KESHO. The Club embraces a holistic approach to the challenging issues of the education in one of Kenya’s poorest counties.

Rotary Club of Kilifi supports a number of Education initiatives throughout the year including financial assistance for deserving students in partnership with KESHO. The Club embraces a holistic approach to the challenging issues of the education in one of Kenya’s poorest counties. To fund them, the Club organizes an annual Run/Walk for education projects. This year, the sixth annual event will be held on Saturday 23rd June, starting with registration at 3:00 pm. Entry for the 5km Run/Walk is 1,000/- and it is open to all ages and abilities. The event will be held at Karisa Maitha grounds in Kilifi, opposite the Governor’s office. For more information or to register, www.kilifirotaryclub.org.

FUNDRAISING GOLF TOURNAMENTHELD ON 24TH FEBRUARY 2018 TO RAISE FUNDS FOR KENYA RURAL BLINDNESS ERADICATION EYE CAMP (to take place potentially 6-8TH APRIL 2018)

Rotary Club of Nairobi was assisted by Prime Bank Limited (Rtn Amar Kantaria and team) to organize and execute a fundraising golf tournament on 24th February

2018 held at Vet Labs. 75% of the net proceeds from the fundraising golf tournament are allocated towards the Kenya Rural Blindness Eradication eye camp which is tentatively scheduled to take place between 6-8th April 2018 in Kisumu. This particular eye camp will be targeting 200 plus cataract operations. The remaining 25% of the net proceeds from the fundraising golf tournament are to be allocated towards a sanitation block for the physically challenged (Jamhuri Primary School sanitation block).

Rotary Club of Nairobi carried out a very successful eye camp with 216 plus cataract operations during January 2018 in Kisumu. The funds raised from this tournament are to be used for the next eye camp. These eye camp/ Cataract surgeries address both disease eradication and economic development areas of focus.

SLEEPING CHILDREN Around the World Bed Kits DistributionOne of the signature projects of Ro-tary Club of Nairobi. In collaboration with the Canadian charity, Sleeping Children Around the World (SCAW), Rotary Club of Nairobi has been dis-tributing Bed-Kits to children between the ages of 6-12 years in various schools across the country since the year 2000. The project recognizes the importance of sleep on the mental and physical development of children. In the Rotary Year 2017-18, 4000 Bed Kits were distributed (between 3rd and 10th March 2018) to Children in primary schools located in Gilgil, Nai-robi, Makindu and Narok. Total cost Kshs 11,500,000.00.

The Bed Kits container mattress, blanket, mosquito net, Sleeping paja-ma, slippers, school bag, pencil case, pencils and stationery. For two distri-bution sites, Rotary Club of Nairobi partnered with Rotary Clubs of Mili-mani, Utumishi and Hurlingham and Rotaract Clubs of JKUAT, USIU and RCNC to assist with distribution. This event involved 4000 child recipients, 8 sites, school tutors, multiple coor-dinators, Canadian SCAW team of 7, parents of children, a team of upto 20 Rotarians and Rotaractors involved during the distribution process. Over 5,000 individuals.

Friendship Exchange is an international exchange program for Rotary members and friends that allows participants to take turns hosting one another in their homes and clubs

Simply put, Rotary Friendship Exchange fosters interclub collaboration, with the goal of advancing international understanding and peace through service projects and spending time together.

Only through experience and possibly through the lens can you appreciate these benefits and purpose to engage on next Friendship Exchange programme.

This year; 2017/2018 under great guidance of DG Peter Mbui, the

programme was to have two RFE in our D9212. We therefore purposed to do reciprocals to two Districts D9125 Abuja Nigeria & D3232 Chennai India.

Rotary Friendship Exchange

RFE to D3232 CHENNAI – INDIA Feb 15th – 25th 2018 This is evidently the largest RFE programmed D9212 has done so far.

Led by our DG Peter Mbui, we had a group of 34 Rotarians and Guests.

We had PDG Harry Mugo & Alice, PDG Eric Kimani & Margaret, 2017/2018 Presidents, AGs, Rotarians serving at District level, past Presidents , Rotarians & Friends.

Our hosts led by Ravi Raman did an amazing flowless work of hosting that there were no gaps.

What was unique about this RFE is that Rotarians in Chennai had given us a 60% off offer on medical check-up for all Rotarians and guests – Rotary rocks!!.

Rotary Club of Nairobi had much reason to celebrate during the meeting on 8th March 2018. Some Rotarians from the Club have in the past few weeks celebrated their birthdays

In addition to this, 8th March marks International Womens Day. The guest speaker for the day was Susan Muchemi, Business development manager, global sales and institutional partnerships Vision Spring, together with Rtn Ruth Mugo. The Talk enlightened us on the topic “See To Earn, Learn and Be Safe” this is in line with one of Rotary Club of Nairobi’s signature projects- Eye Camps.
