ENGAGING ORDINARY PEOPLE ... ACHIEVING EXTRAORDINARY RESULTS ISSUE 8. SUMMER/FALL 2014 1 www.added-dimension.com AD’S 2014 KIDS IN THE MEDIA SUMMER INITIATIVE D uring the week of July 14th-July 18th, AD hosted its first Kids in the Media summer initiative, at the AD office in St. Charles, MO. Kids ranged from ages 7-14, and learned about various media outlets, including newspaper, radio and television broadcasts, photography and the most recent outlet, social media. “I hope kids will learn how important media is today.” Kids participated in individual and group activities. Some were team building exercises where the success of each task given depended on each individual’s work and participation. Everyone designed their own t-shirts and picture frames to have as mementos from the week. “I hope kids will learn how important media is today. We also stressed the importance of using social media responsibly. Television, which once dominated children’s media consumption habits, is now joined by computers, video games, cell phones and other connected devices. Teaching kids how to regulate their time at an early age can help for more responsible use in the future. We also wanted to stress there are more important aspects of media besides social media,” said Tatyana Peck, AD’s summer intern and Kids in the Media Coordinator. One of the biggest events during this week occurred when they all participated in an original movie trailer and movie, written by one of the kids. The final version of the short movie can be found on YouTube, entitled Kids Camp Revolution.

For the past 20 years, I have been a public relations specialist in the

transportation industry, spending countless hours preparing press releases, articles, newsletters, fact sheets and other materials for projects and studies in the St. Louis Metropolitan region. However, over the past 10 years my work has changed significantly.

I have witnessed how the emergence of social media has changed the way in which I do business and how I receive my news. No longer is my day started with a generic scan of local newspapers when I get to the office.

Before I get to work I have perused Facebook and gone through Twitter to see if something was written about my client or one of my projects, checked my emails on my mobile phone or tablet for project updates and watched the local and national news.

The influence of social media on my daily life has caused me to always take my work with me and to never be too far away from my mobile device. I have developed this sense of immediacy that was not present 20 years ago.

Social media has definitely changed the way in which we all receive and consume news and information. It is a phenomenon that has caused many to become 24-hour news junkies. Its presence has raised and heightened the awareness and expectations of all consumers.

How has social media changed /improved your professional world? AD would like to hear from you.
