PROTECTING MIDDLE SCHOOL SPORTSCharlotte-Mecklenburg School Superintendent Dr. Peter Gorman announced last week a set of proposals to cut spending for the CMS School system. I, along with many others were shocked to see that Dr. Gor-man wanted to eliminate middle school athletic programs. School board member Joe White was quoted in the Charlotte Observer as saying, “There are those of us who sit where we sit today because of athlet-ics.” Mr. White and many other members of the board are said to be against this measure. Let’s hope they will keep this stance and lead Dr. Gorman in another direction. By no means are middle school sports as important as academics in the educational process, they do however serve a very valuable role in raising children. To simply eliminate them would be a grave error in my eyes. These sports help to mold so many qualities into our 12, 13 and 14 year old children. They learn leadership, discipline, teamwork, responsibility , time management and so many other important character traits through sports. With that said step back and take a look at a few previous columns I have written on middle school sports. As crazy as it sounds, let me reverse direction and say I am almost inclined to say yes Dr. Gorman, go ahead and eliminate middle school sports. Let me explain that view before you think I have fallen off my rocker and bumped my head. Middle school sports are often put on the backburner here in Mecklenburg County. Football practice be-gins five weeks after practice starts for Union County Middle School students. End of the season football and softball games are scheduled to begin when sunset is less than 45 minutes away, no opportunities are provided for 6th graders and very few 7th graders stand a chance of making a team in the overcrowded middle schools. So yes, from this perspective, I say go ahead and cut middle school sports, but don’t even think about doing it unless you grant full rights to each schools booster club to take over the sports. I would invite Dr. Gorman to take a ten minute drive with me from South Charlotte over to Marvin Ridge Middle School or Weddington Middle School to see the outstanding commitment those booster clubs give to their middle school athletic programs. They provide far more opportunities for kids and both schools truly rally behind their teams. Before this process gets to far down the road, I would encourage each of you to take the time to email the members of the Board of Education and Dr. Gorman . I have linked their email addresses up on my website : www.southcharlottesportsreport.com. Let them know how you feel before it’s too late. I know money has to be cut from the budget but there are a lot more items that will cause far less harm than eliminating middle school sports. I wonder how much money could be saved by not sending home every month the two sided, multi-colored cafeteria menus that essentially say they are serving the same thing on the same day each week? That might be enough to save baseball and softball right there :) Have a Great Week,

BEYOND THE GAME WITH MEGAN ROBERTSON

Sixteen year old Megan Rob-ertson is a softball player at Marvin Ridge High School. She

is the daughter of Doug and Christine Robertson. Megan was recently named a finalist for the Greater Charlotte Hot Stove League Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award. What is your favorite thing about playing softball?“Can I say everything? Haha, well I love being behind the plate and watching the plays as they unfold. I love the feel-ing of both throwing someone out and, on the offensive side, hitting a shot to the outfield.” What have you done this winter to prepare for the

spring softball season?“I’ve gone to Peak Fitness a few times just to stay in shape. I also have been going to condi-tioning with my school team and going to the batting cages every week. One big help to get me ready for the season was getting to play in a tournament in The Netherlands. It was a great experience and kept the game fresh in my mind for this upcoming season.” What are your goals for year two of Marvin Ridge softball?“I am pretty confident that we will beat our 11-11 record, and

I would say our goal is to get into the 3-A playoffs and to continue to work together as a team.”

What is your biggest achievement ever playing softball?“I was picked by my teammates as team captain for the first year of the Maverick’s softball season.” What life skills have you learned from playing soft-ball?I’ve picked up a lot of leader-ship qualities and communica-tion skills. I’ve also learned

that sometimes your priority should be to do what’s best for the team. Do you enjoy playing any other sports?“Nope, softball is the only one for me. I do like watching foot-ball and baseball, though.” What is your favorite sub-ject and have you thought about what you would like to study in college?“My favorite subject has always been math (I’m in calculus right now). I’m really interested in going into psy-chology.”

    Happy 70th Birthday

    Poppy!

    We love you,

    Christopher & Matthew

    CHARLOTTE MAD DAWGS BASKETBALL

The Charlotte Mad Dawgs are gearing up for another successful travel basketball season. Coached by Rodney Scott and David Trout, the Mad Dawgs have quickly become the premier travel team in South Charlotte. The team competes in numerous regional USBA, USSSA and AAU tournaments. This 14u team was formed in 2006-2007 with the goal of preparing the boys to make their Middle School teams. The coaches believe that learning and executing the fundamentals of basketball now - will lead to continued success for the players on multiple levels in the future. UNDERSTAND THE COLLEGE RECRUITING PROCESS

This year approximately 4,200,000 High School Student Athletes will take the field or court to play Basketball, Softball, Football, Volleyball and Soccer for their schools. Although the majority of them aspire to continue playing while they work towards their college de-gree, there will only be about 50,000 roster positions available for incoming freshmen at the schools at which they apply. Obviously, many deserving athletes don’t get to follow their dreams of playing collegiate athletics and in many cases it’s simply because they were unedu-cated about how to approach the recruiting process.

What does being a non-qualifier mean? How do I know if I’m being recruited? Is it worth the money to attend all of those exposure tournaments? Do coaches actually watch tape that I send them? These are all questions that I hear on a regular basis and although they are always good questions, they are just sometimes asked too late. The answers are not common sense answers. The average South Charlotte family doesn’t know the answers because the “ins and outs” of college recruiting are as foreign to them as tax code is to me.

Which brings me to my point. A young student athlete that strives to play a sport at the college level has only one chance to be recruited. Where they get their education, the experi-ence of playing intercollegiate athletics and even how much scholarship money they receive all will have significant impact on their futures. So, why leave it to chance? Make sure that you and your family are properly educated on how to approach the college recruiting process.

The right time to start contacting schools, how to make sure that you are getting their at-tention and the correct way to shoot and edit video so that coaches will watch it are all parts of the process that you need to understand. National Scouting Report has been connecting premier high school athletes to college programs for over 25 years and we are available to the readers of the South Charlotte Sports Report for recruiting evaluations free of charge. Our mission is to educate you on the recruiting process, evaluate your progress, make recom-mendations and provide information on qualified student-athletes to our network of over 1000 schools. One of our scouts would be happy to set up an interview with you at your con-venience. We look forward to hearing from you at (704) 615 2989.

Q: What is “Brain Training”? A: While there are many options for a struggling learner, only Brain Training or Cognitive skills training provides a dramatic, permanent change in the way he or she processes information. Everything we learn we process using our brain’s cognitive abilities like auditory and visual process-ing, memory, attention and reasoning. This is true whether you are a preschooler, a senior citizen or anywhere in between. Effective learning requires strong, active mental skills. Cognitive or “Brain” training makes these stronger skills possible. Brain training exercises the brain like a fitness coach works your muscles, and the results are similar—more strength to accomplish the task. Training will prepare pre-school children to learn to read and reason. Elementary, middle and high school students can be trained in skills that improve reading, planning, math computations, memory and attention. Better skills lead to better grades, improved self esteem and more opportunities.

When Jack started LearningRx he was failing 3th grade, in the short time he was in the program to the end of the school year he was able to pass his math EOGs and pass his school year. Now he is in the fourth grade and his reading and math have improved. His attention in school has improved as well. I know the program has helped Jack improve his learning capabilities and confidence to learn. I thank LearningRx and his trainer for helping my son succeed in school. Tuesday, June 23rd - The Battle of the Border Baseball Showcase Camp will be held at Fort Mill, HS. This event will bring together the top talent in the 2010, 2011 and 2012 classes for a day of showcasing their skills to a large group of colligate coaches and pro scouts. The top baseball players from across North and South Carolina will have the opportunity to participate in this Showcase event.

Wednesday, June 24th - The Battle of the Border All Star Baseball Game will be held under the lights for the top high school players from the Mecklenburg and York County areas. Just prior to the feature game, a special Battle of the Border “Future Stars” All Star Game will be held for rising tenth and eleventh graders.

    SOFTBALL

Monday, June 22nd - The Battle of the Border Softball Showcase Camp will be held for a large group of softball players from the 2010, 2011 and 2012 classes. These selected players will be invited to attend the talent showcase with a large group of coaches from every division of college softball.

Tuesday, June 23rd - The Battle of the Border Softball All Star Game will be held between players from the Mecklenburg and York County areas.

“We are all real excited to offer this unique event for players in our area,” said Tripp Roakes, Publisher of The South Charlotte Sports Report, an area youth sports news-paper and marketing company. “Along with Jeff Schaefer at Carolina Baseball Center (CBC), we developed this event to allow the players to represent their state, showcase their talents and enjoy the game on tremendous facilities at Winthrop University. Top players from across both states will also have a chance to participate in a baseball and softball showcase camps in front of college and pro scouts. In today’s world, it has become so important to display your skills in front of a large number of coaches and increase the opportunities for college and beyond.”

“CBC has built a reputation for attracting some of the most talented players in these two states. Our relationship with the college coaches has come from continually providing them the opportunity to see the best of the best in a controlled and struc-tured baseball environment. The reception from both college coaches and professional scouts that we have shared this event with has been overwhelming. They are very ex-cited about being able to see so much of the talent in this hotbed.” Said Jeff Schaefer, Founder of CBC.

Coaches, players and parents may make nominations for all three all star games begin-ning February 1st. Registration for each talent showcase will also open on February 1st. Each registration will be reviewed and the top players will be selected to attend the showcase. The All-Star Game selections will be made by an independent selection committee. Rosters for both the showcases and all four All Star games will be an-nounced in Mid-May. Nominations and further information will be available at www.battleofthebordershowcase.com

    CAROLINAS BASEBALL CENTER

In 2009, Ardrey Kell’s la-crosse team looks forward to continued improvement and consistency. The Knights be-gan play in 2007 with a 4-12 re-cord followed up by a 10-7 fin-ish in 2008. In the third year of the program, the team has its sights set on bids in the City Championship and the NCHS-LA state playoffs.

To meet their goals, the Knights will rely heavily on strengths in the midfield and goaltending. The midfield rep-resents the deepest, and per-haps most talented, position on the roster. The unit will be led by senior Jimmy Core, a three-year starter and captain. Core has the size and speed required to be a well-rounded midfielder. Core will not only be asked to engineer the offense, but he will also lead the team’s defensive efforts. Junior Alex Heyward has improved tremendously over the last year and will have to increase his offensive pro-duction to take the focus off of

Core. A pair of young midfielders will add to the depth in the Knights midfield. Sophomore Chris Wilson and fresh-man Dylan Kane are both athletic mid-fielders who shoot the ball well. Other candidates to fill out the first two lines in-clude juniors David Goyer, Erik Savage, Brandon Martin and sophomores Kyle Lombardi and Con-nor Gilbride.

The Knights are extremely fortunate to have two outstand-ing goalies in junior Jordan Taylor and sophomore Jon Nev-id. Taylor is amongst the top goalies in the city and perhaps the state. He is very sound fundamentally and has the ability to get hot and take

over a game. Additionally, Taylor will be the vocal leader on the defensive end of the

field. Nevid would be a starting goalie at many programs in the city. He is a proven shot stopper who has improved his stick handling and outlet passing. Nevid may see some playing time at close defense or on the man-down unit.

The Knights will be looking for their unproven attack and defense units to step up in 2009. The at-tack receives a boost with the transfer of junior Cody McMa-hon. A natural lefty, McMahon adds a reli-able finisher that the Knights have been lacking in the past. McMahon’s presence on the attack may help to take some of the pressure off the

midfield unit. In addition, the attack will receive contribu-

tions from sophomore Ryan McLaughlin and junior Harri-son Raznick. McLaughlin had several productive games last season, but must provide more consistent production this sea-son.

The defensive unit must overcome the graduation of six seniors from 2008. The Knights have an athletic, al-beit inexperienced, grouping of players ready to accept the chal-lenge. Senior Max Caldwell, ju-niors Mike Keever and Thomas Nitsche, and sophomore Fran McCann have all steadily im-proved over the last year and must provide balance and steady play in 2009.

The Knights open the sea-son with a grueling four game stretch which includes 2008 NCHSLA state playoff partici-pants Charlotte Catholic, Wilm-ington Hoggard, Weddington, and Myers Park.

MATTHEWS BASKETBALL UNDERWAY! MARA Basketball sign-ups in process

Matthews, September 29th - Basketball signups have been brisk for the 2008 - 2009 edition of MARA Basketball. With over 500 players last winter, the league has doubled in size in the last four years. MARA Basketball is becoming one of the dominant recreation leagues in the southern part of Charlotte. “Basketball interest has peaked over the several years with the ACC in our backyard as well as the emergence of the UNC Charlotte, Winthrop and Davidson basketball programs” mentioned Jeff White, MARA’s Basketball Commissioner. Last year MARA fielded over 60 teams. “We’re putting out a really good product inside what is already a strong athletic organization” White stated. MARA basketball has become a teaching and developmental league without losing it’s competitive spirit. “We’re very competitive, we have more practice time, more games, longer games as well as professional referees and great facilities. MARA also has an all-star program and holds a Southeast Charlotte All-Star Tournament (The SCAT) that attracted 24 teams last spring. ” We have gotten tremendous support from the Principals, Faculty and Athletic Directors at the schools we use. As busy as they are, they always find a way to partner with us and make sure they support their students and local association. Providence, Butler and East Mecklenburg High Schools as well as Jay M. Robinson, South Charlotte, Community House and Crestdale Middle Schools and Mat-thews, Elizabeth Lane, McKee Road and Endhaven Elementary Schools have all partnered to make this happen”. The kids are the benefactors. It gives them opportunity to learn a team sport and all the lessons that come with it.

MARA participants also benefit from their association with the jr.nba/jr.wnba as well as their par-ticipation in the Charlotte Bobcat Youth Basketball network. Benefits of the Bobcats network are coaches, player and referee clinics, Bobcat uniforms as well as group ticket opportunities. MARA offers leagues for boys and girls from ages 5 - 17.

THE Q SHACK COACH OF THE WEEKCOACH DEBRA POPE

    PROVIDENCE HIGH SCHOOL

The Charlotte Flames Youth Hockey organization had an im-pressive showing at the Golden Puck Hockey Tournament in Charleston, South Carolina over the Martin Luther King week-end. The Flames sent six teams – 1 Bantam (U14) team, 2 Pee-Wee (U12) teams, 2 Squirt (U10) teams and 1 Mite (U8) team - with players ranging in age from 6 to 14 who practice weekly with their own coaches as well as with former Buffalo Sabre, Jason Dawe, at the Pineville Ice House.

The Flames were proud to have four teams still competing in the semi-finals of the tour-nament, two of which were the Squirt A and Squirt B teams. Both teams played down to the wire but came up short with 2-1 losses, the Squirt A team in overtime. However, the coaches and parents were very proud of the effort the players put forth on the ice and the sportsmanlike manner in which they handled their loss.

Two Flames teams made it to the finals of the tournament. The first to play was the Mite team, coached by Mike Holland and Garry McAvoy, and facing the Charlotte Junior Checkers

whom the Mite Flames had de-feated the previous weekend to win their division regular sea-son title. With all of the Flames families cheering them on, the

Mite Flames came back from a 4-2 deficit to tie it up 4-4 and force a three minute overtime in which neither team scored. That brought it to a shoot out which

ended 2-1 in favor of the Junior Checkers.

The Flames PeeWee B team, coached by Jason Ehrlich, played later in the day with a smaller

crowd but no less heart. They entered the championship as the number one seed after win-ning 2 games and tying a third. The opposing team, the Atlanta Knights, took the early lead 1-0 but Flames winger Chase Wiri-den, assisted by Martti Kahra, quickly answered back with a goal to tie it up. The Knights scored again but this time it was Flames center Martti Kahra, as-sisted by Chase Wiriden, who scored to tie it again. Late in the second period, Flames winger Chris Walsh, assisted by defen-seman Ben Crotty, scored what would be the championship goal. Flames goalie Brendan Bishop and the entire Flames team played the last period on high alert and did not allow an-other goal by the Knights.

“We are so proud of all of our players and coaches for how well they represented the Flames or-ganization both in their fantastic performance and in their sports-manship,” said Gerry Kramer, Flames board member. The Charlotte Flames were estab-lished in 2007 and have grown from three initial travel teams to the current six.

Coach Pope has led her Lady Panthers team to one of their best seasons in years. Pope, a former professional basketball player, has helped the team with her leadership and past experiences.

“We are lucky to have a coach with her talent and expe-rience,” says Briana Chartrand, Junior forward/center and team scoring leader. But, most important, is the way Coach Pope cares about her players as individuals. They respond by believing in themselves and pulling together as a team.

    It’s not all about basketball

for the team, over the holi-days, the players donated gifts for children and took them to Presbyterian Hospital. “It was a good team bonding experi-

ence,” says Lauren Baker, Ju-nior guard/ forward. The girls really like playing for Coach Pope. “Can’t we make this a nomination for Coach of the Year?”, asks Kristen Lawson, Junior forward/ center.

The last article we looked at assessing upper back strength to keep a balanced shoulder and preventing shoulder pain. This article, the fifth in a five part series will examine how to modify your upper body program to avoid shoulder pain.

If you have trouble with any of previous 5 tests you may need to modify your upper body strengthening routine. Here are three suggestions:

    1. 3:1 Pull/Push ratioBecause our upper back muscles tend to be weaker than our chest muscles we need to target this area more during our workouts. To do this, you should have a 3:1 pull/push ratio. Simply put, you need to do 3 times as many upper back exercises as chest exercises. For example: If you perform 3-4 sets of bench press then you would need to perform 9-12 sets of upper back exercises. Upper back exercises would include the Y, T, Bent T, one arm row with elbow away from the side, pull down in front, etc.

    2. Work chest for endurance along with trunk stabilityWork your chest muscles for endurance with some bodyweight exercises. These exercises will also develop some additional core stability if performed with the back in a neutral position (not arched or rounded). Try these three exercises for one minute each with your goal to work up to two minutes

Figures A and B – Start at the top of push-up position. While maintaining one arm on the ground, lift one arm and rotate your body so that your chest is square with the closest wall. Return to the start position and rotate the opposite direction. Repeat for one minute.

Figures C,D,and E – “V-push-up”. Again start in the top of a push-up position. Push back to drop your head between your shoulders and form an “inverted V” position. Try to get your heels on the ground but do not move the position of your hands. Hold for 5 count and return to the start position. Repeat for 1 minute.

Figure F - Push up on a gymnic ball. Perform standard pushups on the ball. 3 sets of 10 – work up to 3 sets of 30.

    3. Incorporate flexibility into your routines. Make sure you stretch your shoulders daily and especially after your upper body workouts.Remember it is your posture during the day combined with your upper body strengthening routine that can cause come tightness in your shoulder. Hold your stretches for slightly longer

(30 seconds) if you are trying to increase flexibility.
