Dear Family at Central (and all the
visitors!)
For those of you who don’t know, my
name is Heather. I’m Randy’s (the
preacher) good child. He has another one,
but we’re just not all that sure about him.
I’m nearing the end of a year teaching
English in China, and we are coming up on
the last major holiday I will miss. As I am
sure is the case for many protestant people,
my memories of Easter consist more of a
lot of frilly dresses and people boasting
about how we are better than the Catholics
because we celebrate the resurrection every
week than reverence for our amazing
redemption. But you know what positive
thing I do remember? My mother always
had an Easter basket on the table for me.
Even during the years when I was much
too old for such things and Dad was
leaving early to preach, Mom would make
a basket of candy and novels and good
smelling girly things. My mother is
incredibly gifted when it comes to giving
presents and the love I felt at the effort and
intentionality that went into those baskets
taught me much of what I know about how
to love people. You see, I can get my
head around an Easter basket with my
favorite things in it. I can understand my
mother sacrificing her lunch break to go

buy the supplies and getting up a little early to make
sure it was on the table before I woke up. I do not
understand God letting His son die for me. There is a
part of me that says that’s simply too much. I cannot
be worth that kind of sacrifice. Couldn’t God have
given us some candy and called it a day? But no, my
sin is too big for candy. On my better days, I know
that. The good thing is, I don’t have to understand to
know the end of the story. Jesus woke up. God got His
Son back. And we have set aside a day to be thankful
for that. So I hope that as you look out on all the pretty
dresses and fancy suits, as you giggle at how precious
all the children look and experience a little innocent
lust at the thought of the ham baking in the oven at
home, that you will take a moment to say thank you to
the God who was willing to give you everything. I do
not know for sure but I think that these kinds of days,
days when you get to see the sunrise and sing with your
family, days when there is plenty of food and you are
surrounded by the people you love, these kinds of days
are the days God saved us for. Welcome to worship.

1. Rehoboam sought counsel from the elders who had served his father first and then
to the young men who had served him. To whom do you turn when you need
advice in making difficult decisions? Why?
2. This chapter is full of stories of conflict. Do you avoid conflict or are you more apt
to provoke it? What lessons about conflict and conflict resolution can you learn
from the stories in this chapter?
Day Two
1. Jeroboam turned away from the LORD and caused Israel to sin in order to hold on
to his position and power. When in your own life have you sinned against God in
order to maintain a position, hold on to power or boost your standing? What safe
guard could you put in place to help you make God-honoring choices in the future?
2. When the man of God spoke against Jeroboam, the king was outraged. How do you
receive correction?
3. The anger of the LORD is mentioned four times in this chapter. If someone asked
you what makes God angry, what could you tell him or her? To which of the Ten
Commandments was God’s anger related?
Day Three
1. Review the summary statements made about Kings Asa and Ahab. In a single
sentence, write a summary statement that you would like to define the character of
your life. If it is not true of your life now, what steps do you need to take toward
that goal?
