MaryHinan-GrosewelcomedustotheGreenwoodUnitedChurchAnnualMeeting,callingforamotiontoelectachairandrecordingsecretary.MarymadethemotionthatBrianNicholsbechairpersonandPauletteNicholsrecordingsecretaryforthismeeting.ThismotionwassecondedbyJoyceFeeandcarried.

TheAgendaforthemeetingwasdistributed.ShirleyLannenmovedacceptanceoftheAgendaasprinted,secondedbyGaryLounsburyandcarried.DavidReevemovedtheacceptanceoftheminutesofFeb.26,2017,secondedbyGaryMadden,andcarried.

BusinessArising:Therewasnobusinessarising.

BrianNicholscalleduponGaryLounsburytomakeapresentationtoArtandCarolHopkinsonrecognizingtheir15yearsprovidingcustodialserviceatDonwoodandGreenwood.Thanksandappreciationwasextendedforthisimportantcontributiontothecongregation.

*ThePresbyteryReportwasaddressedbyDawnCoxwhohighlightedthatthiswasayearofremits,initiatingatimeofchangeforallPresbyteries.

*RuthBensonandBonnieJullpresentedtheBedfordHousereport,onbehalfofMaryGordon,andasGreenwoodmembersoftheProjectManagementTeam.ThesupportfromGreenwoodUnitedChurchhaveaidedtheBridgingoutofPovertyTeamatBedfordHouse.AsecondBridgingTeamhasalreadybegun,withthepossibilityforathirdteam.CommunitydevelopmentisanintrinsicpartofthemissionatBedfordHouse.MoreworkisunderwayfortheReconciliationProject,reachingoutwiththeIndigenouscommunity.MembersoftheGreenwoodcongregationshouldbeproudofbeingpartofthisBedfordHouseinitiative.

*InMarionGriffinandSusieBunting’sabsence,MaryH-GaddressedtheMusicreport,sayingthatnewmembersarealwayswelcome.ThemusicministryatGreenwoodisgreatlyappreciated.

Thereports,withtheamendmenttotheTrustees’report,werethenmovedforacceptancebyGaryLounsbury,secondedbyCarolHopkinson,andcarried.

FinancialReports:

RuthBensonaddressedtheGreenwoodUnitedChurchFinancialReports.TheMemorialCommitteewasdisbandedattheAnnualmeeting2017,andthisaccountnowfallsunderthejurisdictionoftheTrustees.BecausewehavebeenpayingextrabankchargesontheZimbabweaccount,Ruthrecommendedclosingthisaccount,andfoldingitintotheGeneralaccount.TheZimbabwefundswillappearasaseparatelineundertheGeneralaccount.BriannotedthatchangestoZimbabwecurrencyareimpactingAmericancurrencyinZimbabwe.HugethankswereextendedtoRuthforherongoingcommitmenttooverseethefinancialoperationofGreenwood.Brianaskedif

therewereanyfurtherquestions.Withnofurtherquestions,Ruthmovedacceptanceofthisreport,secondedbyRogerClappertonandcarried.

NominationReport:MaryHinan-GrosepresentedtheNominationreport,withtheadditionofBonnieJullasaSessionmemberforthreeyears,andAnneWilsonasamemberoftheNominatingcommitteeforthreeyears.UndertheStewards,RogerClappertonwillbeonthecommitteeforthreeyears,andEmilVargawillbeamemberfortwoyears.MaryaskedforavolunteerforoneyearontheStewards,andBarbJohnsonagreedtositonthiscommitteeforoneyear.RuthBensonaskedthattheTreasurerbeaddedunderthecommittees,anditwasdecidedthatthispositionwouldbeaddedtothelistofannualappointments.Marymovedacceptanceoftheamendedreport,addingthenamesasoutlinedabove.ThismotionwassecondedbyRuthBenson,andcarried.

ThankswereextendedtoSusieBuntingforre-creatingtheGreenwoodUnitedChurchHandbook.Itwasahugeundertaking,andprovidesanexcellentresourceforGreenwood.Copieshavebeendistributedtocommitteemembers,andarealsoavailableatthebackofthechurch.

NewBusiness:

SanctuaryGardenUpdate-RuthBenson,PatLounsburyandBrianNicholsaddressedthisproject.Theballparkwillbecomeafieldofgrassandflowers,withpathswanderingthroughthespaceforpeopletoenjoy.Alargearboristobeadded,andaplantlistwillbepostedsothatpeoplecandonateplants,particularlypollinatingplantsnativetothisarea.Somesortofseatingalsobeplacedinthegarden.Peoplewillbeinvitedtoplant,pullweeds,andbeapartofthisgarden,hopefullyextendingintothecommunity.Thisisan“our”project.Green-upwillnolongerbeinvolvedwiththebees,soGreenwoodwillnowbefullyinchargeofthehives.tofurtherdiscussthisproject.Artsuggestedusingsome“boxgardens”.Thisisanexperimentindevelopmentsoallideaswillbeconsidered.Thankswereexpressedtothiscommitteefortheirinitiativeonthisproject.

FromtheMinister’sDesk January2019Aswecontinuetoincreaseourenvironmentalawareness,wecomeacrosssomanydauntingfacts.Thedecimationofeco-systems,andthelossofspeciesonland,air,andwater-allrevealthedamagehumangreedandconsumptionhavewrought.LikeOldTestamentprophetswestruggletohaveavoicethatisbothawarningandaninspirationtohope.DeepeningourfaithinourMaker’swaysshowsusapath.Thenaturalresilienceandhealingoftheplanetisprofound.Theendlesscycleoflife,death,andre-birthgivesusaviewbeyondourowncurrentneeds-tothecryoftheplanetwhichisthesameasthecryofthepoor.WhileGreenwoodrespondstothecalloftheearth,wealsopartnerwithBedfordHousetorespondtothecryofthepoor.Bothcallusintothesamemissionofradicalsimplicity,thoughtfulappreciationofourgifts,andavulnerablesharingofwhogodmadeustobe.In2018,wewalkedallthewaythroughthebiblewithBrianMcClaren’s“WeMakethisRoadbyWalking”.Thisstudyguideofferedweeklyreflectionsandapaththroughscripturethattellsofagrowing,shifting,evolving,understandingofhumanity’srelationshipwiththedivine.Fromatribalperspectiveon“who’sincontrolhereanyway?”,tointernationalgraspoftheconflictsbetweenEmpiresandgod’skingdom,towherewestandtoday-circlingback,orperhapsspiralingforward-tothechallengeofseeingallhumanityasonetribalvillagesharingthissmall,green,planetwithcreaturesgreatandsmall.There’sabuzzatGreenwood.Allofthetiny,faith-full,effortsofour“hive”reverberatethroughcityandcounty.Aswewalkourtalk,cross-pollinatingourideaswithneighbours,friends,andfamily–wealignourselveswithwhatgod’sgreenspiritisdoingtohealtheplanet.

Sundaymorningswesharestories,shareleadership,shareinsongandsymbolsthatreminduswhoweareandwhoseweare.Sundayafternoonswebeganmonthlygreenpotlucksasawaytogettoknownewfriendsanddeepenourrelationswitholdfriends.Sharingfood,wechew

overnewideas,newchallenges,andoldsolutionsworthremembering.Inthesummer,wedrewthecirclewide,andwiderstill,towelcomeFairviewcousinsintothesacredactsofstory-telling,song,andcommunalsense-making.Weseektosimplifyandreduce.AsourUnitedChurchorganizationgetsprunedbackfromfourcourtstothree,weseektodiscern“whatreally

matters”aswelearntoputourenergyintotherootsofwhatkeepsusgreen.Goinginto2019,wehearthecalltoReduce,Reduce,Reduceforgod’ssake.Forthesakeoftheplanetandourgrandchildren’s,grandchildren’s,grandchildren.Withlaughter,song,andfoodforthoughtandsoul,wepursuegod’sperfectwaysusingourimperfectionsastherulefortheupside-downkin-domofJesus.Weextendourdivineimaginationsbeyondthelimitationsofoldhabits–intoaworldofpossibilities–asdiverseasourCreator’swondrousdesigns.God’screationisourinspiration.Yourlives,yourhopes,yourhoney-makingpurpose,inspiresme.Yoursinservicetolife,love,andcommunity,AllanSmith-Reeve

• AnniversaryServiceinJuneincludedthewholecongregationparticipatinginthrowing“SeedBombs”inourSanctuaryGarden.Whichwilleventuallyprovide“OurGirls”(thebees)withtheirownpersonalpollinatorhabitatclosetohome.Forthesecondyearwewereabletogivethehoneyharvesttoeachfamily.

PastoralCareandOutreachAccomplishments:

• GloriaMaddensupportedusbysendinggreetingcardstomanyindividualswhowereillorwhojustneededacheerynote.ShealsosentEasterCardstothePastoralCarelistofindividuals.OriginaldesignedChristmascardswerecreatedbyEmilVarga&signedbychurchmembers.Theywereeitherhanddeliveredorsenttoourshut-ins.

• ManyhomesandhospitalvisitsaswellascaringtelephonecallshavebeenmadebyourPastoralCareCommittee.

• ContinueSupportingKawarthaFoodShareMusic:

• WearegratefultoMarionGriffin,ourmusicdirectorandtoourchoir.Theirdedication,theirrangeofmusic,andthejoytheybringourcongregationisahighlighteachSunday.

Thetrusteesheldtwoformalmeetingsaswellasemailcollaborationsthisyearaswedidtheworkofoversightonourphysicalfacilityandmadedecisionsonfinancialmatters.Thetrusteeswereparticularlypleasedtosupportthedoorproject.WehadreceivedadonationfromtheestateofthelateEleanorSpeightwhichhadbeencreditedtotheMemorialaccount.Thismeantthatfundswereonhandforthedoorproject.OurfundsareinvestedwithFieraCapital,themanagementcompanyfortheUnitedChurchofCanadaFoundation. STEWARDS’REPORT2018WestartedNewYear2018bycleaninginsidethechurchupstairsanddown.Springtimeyardcleanupincludedfixingthelawnwheresodhadbeenturnedoverbysnowplowandtreebranchremovalfromawinterstorm,whichincludedrepairingourneighbour’sfenceonsouthsideofparkinglot.Weinstalledanewrainbarrelanddownspoutforwateringflowers,shrubsandplants.Towardssummerwehadapergolabuiltonthenorthsideofthelawnwithagravelbaseforwalking.Railingsatthefrontentranceandorangesafetylineswererepainted.DownstairsweinstalledanewU.V.lightandwaterfilterinourwaterfiltrationsystem.Aswellwehaveanewwatercoolerandanewcarbonmonoxidedetectorinthekitchen.WehadaverysuccessfulRoastBeefdinnerinthespring,andourBeeswerealsoveryproductive,givingustastyhoney.Fortheupstairs,weboughtanewwirelessheadsetforoursoundsystemfromMaar’sMusic.AndaspecialthankyougoestoEmilandRogerforournewautomatedglassfrontdoors;theysurehavebrightenedourfrontentrance.Insummary,Iwouldliketothankeveryoneinvolvedforyourhelpingivingusaverysuccessfulyear.Respectfullysubmitted,KenMinion(chair)onbehalfofStewards:SusanBunting,RuthBenson(treasurer),RogerClapperton,BarbJohnston,BobMcKinlay,&EmilVarga

ManyachievementshavetakenplaceinourSanctuaryGardenduring2018.

Forourfirstyear,oursmallgroupdecidedtoconcentrateonthe“bones”

whichwere:

1) Allowingthegrasstobecomeamore“natural”environmentwhichwouldencouragepollinatorplantstogrow

2) Trimmingtreesandevergreensonthegarden’sperimetertomakethegardenmorevisible

3) Cuttingapathwayinthegrassleadingtothebeehives4) Designing/constructinganarbortogivethegardenapresence5) Plantingnativeshrubsinvariouslocations6) Seatingtobeplacedforenjoyment

Thesewereallaccomplishedaswellasotherssuchas:

SeedBombs:werethrowninournaturalizedsettinginthehopethatsomeof

these“pollinator”plantswouldgrowforthebeestofeedoninthefuture.

Perennials:donationsofseeds,bulbs,vines,perennialsandshrubswere

madebyThomasA.Stewartaswellasmanyindividualswhichwereplanted

throughoutthegarden.

Flowerbeds:weredugaroundthearboraswellasclosetothebeehivecage

andattheparkinglotwestend.

Dedication:atreewasplantedanddedicatedbyachurchmembertoprovide

shade,beautyandberriesforbirdsandbees.Twogardenbencheswere

placedunderthetreesforpeaceandenjoyment.

Themembersofthegardencommitteehavehadgreatfundreaming,planning,

plantingandthetogethernessof“throwingourseedbombs”.

Thankyoutoallwhohavedonatedtheirexpertise,theirbelovedplants,

manuallabourandofferedencouragement.Iamsurewewillcontinueto

workonour“ongoing”projectformanyyearstocomeandwouldwelcome

anyonetojoinusforasessionofgoodexerciseandfreshair!!

Wehopethateveryonefindsabitofenjoyment,pleasureandpeaceinOUR

sanctuarygardenatGreenwood.

TheGreenwoodChurchChoirhadaverybusyyearin2018.Notonlydidwe

experienceavarietyofnewmusic,butwepresentedanEastercantatawith

BrianNicholsascommentatorandaChristmascantatawithbothBrian

NicholsandMaryGordonascommentators.Weinvitedguestsfromother

churchestoparticipateandwerepleasedwiththeresponse.Wewerealso

pleasedtohavetheJubilations,asmallgroupofwomenwhoareunderthe

directionofArleneGrey,singforusinJune.

BarbaraJohnson’sgroup,FreshExpressions,whonormallypractiseatthe

churchonTuesdayevenings,gavearousingconcertatChristmastime.Itwas

well-receivedbyeveryonewhoattended.Welookforwardtofurtherconcerts

byBarbandhergroup.

Thishasbeenmyfirstyearaschoirmaster,andImustsaythatIthoroughly

enjoythewarmreceptionandfeelingthatIgeteverySunday.Thechoiris

simplyamazing,andthecongregation,alongwithAllan,iswarmand

welcoming.Whatapleasureitistobeabletodowhatoneenjoys.

SHININGWATERSPRESBYTERYREPORT2018hasbeenatimeofdramaticchangeforthewholeUnitedChurchofCanada,fortheBayofQuinteConference,andforShiningWaters(formerlyPeterborough)PresbyterybutthankfullyourGreenwoodcongregationcontinuestothrive.In1925thestructurewasbasedonthatofboththeMethodistandthePresbyterianChurchesofCanadaanditendedDecember31,2018.ThenewstructureistobemorelikethatoftheCongregationaldenomination.TheGeneralCouncilwillcontinueasbeforewithRegions,clustergroupsandlocalcongregations.ThegeographyofourownRegion11isveryliketheformerConferenceareaanditisunlikelytoaffectusdramatically,butsomeregionsarenowwholeprovinces.AtourlastPresbyterymeetinginNovembertheRev.NancyWilsonproposedthatwecontinuetomeetfourtimesayearasaclustergroup.OurcongregationhascometolookforwardtoourannualserviceatLangPioneerVillageandthepotluckfellowshipwhichfollows.Wetrustthisservicewillcontinueandperhapsevenmorecongregationswilljoinservicesbothwithinourdenominationandecumenically.LastFebruaryPresbyterymetatEmmanuelUnitedChurchinPeterborough.Besidestheusualreportsandbusiness,wewelcomedtheRev.Dr.ArunaAlexanderwhospokeofRacialJustice.Dr.ArunaisfromIndiaandhaspersonallyexperiencedunfortunateracialincidents.Weleftwithhopeforamoreinclusivechurchandcountry.AtourJunemeetinginBancrofttherewasanattempttoprepareusforthechange.wherewetalkedofourregrets,ofourareasofourthanksgivingandofourhopesforthefuturechurch.TheworshipleadersusedthesethreecomponentsinourPastoralPrayersatourfinalworshipinNovember.OurownKathleenWhytehasorganizedtheClergyRetreatforthepasttwoyears.Thisyear’swasheldpriortotheNovembermeetingandprovidedanopportunitytoplananimpressiveandmemorableclosingservice.YoumayrememberthatMaryHinan-GroseandIbroughtacandlefromthatservicetoournextserviceatGreenwood.Therewere

Withgrowingsuccessandoptimism,BedfordHousehasenteredalong-term

strategicplanningprocesstoensureoursustainability.Thefirststepwasa

consultationandfocusgroupwithcommunitypartnerstocomeupwithavision

statementandsomesolidobjectives:

BedfordHousewillbeacommunitycatalystforsocialandspiritualresponsestoourchangingtimes.

WethenspenttwofulldaysinDecemberfiguringouthowwe’llgettothisambitious

visioninthenextfiveyears.Theresultiscapturedintheattached“Strategic

SustainabilityOutlook”.

ThisprocessfollowedhardontheheelsofcompletingthepilotBridgingTeam,and

evaluatingourexperience.ThePilotSummaryReportisavailableonourwebsite,

butyoucanalsorequesthardcopies.Essentially,wehavereportedasuccessin

achievingthedesiredoutcomesofthepilot.TheseBridgingTeamsshowpromisein

overcomingthebarriersbetweeneconomicclasses,andimprovingthestabilityof

individuals,families,andthecommunity.

Welearnedsomehardlessonstoo,andhaveadaptedourplanstoreflectthis

learning.ThenextBridgingTeamstartsthiscomingweekatTheMount;wewillbe

puttingournewskillstoworkwiththisteam.Oneofour“povertyexperts”willco-

leadthegroupwithus,usingtheskillslearnedaspartofourInternshipprogram.

WeremaindeeplygratefultothepeopleofGreenwoodUnitedChurch,ourpartners

inthisexcitingoutreachproject.Asyouwillnoteinthisyear’sFinancialStatement,
