HOW DO I BECOME A SAINT? by Dr. Gregory and Lisa Popcak "The Christian life is the continuation and completion of the life of Christ in us." ―John Eudes, as quoted by Bert Ghezzi in Voices of the Saints Today calls us to such joy! We celebrate all the holy men and women who have won the race and made it to heaven. Their example and intercession gives me hope that I can do it, too. But how do I continue Christ’s life through mine? How do I become a saint? As an ordinary person, I may never be called to cloistered life or receive the stigmata. But, I can cheerfully get up fifteen minutes early to make my husband a cup of coffee, so he starts his day feeling loved. I can stop all my busy-ness to stop and look at my daughter’s eyes while she tells me about the picture she just drew, so she feels acknowledged and appreciated. I can let the sleep-deprived new mom standing behind me in the grocery store go ahead of me, so she can have a moment of relief in the midst of a crushingly exhausting day. While I die to myself in these small ways to make a gift of myself to others, I choose to continue Christ’s life in the world, while I hope and pray with the communion of saints that he will complete his life in me one day in heaven. ACTION STEP: On the Solemnity of All Saints (November 1), take a moment to contemplate how you can make a gift of yourself to others. How can you be Christ to those in your life every today? How can you serve the Christ in them? When you do even one thing to make someone’s life easier and more pleasant today, you do it for Christ, and that is what sainthood is all about.

I want to thank Justin Sisul, Director of the Fine Arts Series, the Fine Arts Series Board, and the parishioners of St. Cletus for allowing the Ragtime Concert that benefited the Maternity Clinic

in Gulu, northern Uganda. What a wonderful concert with Bob Milne and a special thank you for the generosity of those present. I was thrilled to receive such a generous offering. So in the name of the mothers and children of Gulu, I say “Apwoyo matek” (thank you all very much)! Sister Jo Ann Geary, CSJ

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION “What is the Church if not the assembly of all the saints?” wrote the fifth-century bishop Niceta. Each Sunday, in the Profession of Faith, we express our belief in the communion of saints, the one body—with Christ as its head—made up of “those who are pilgrims on earth, the dead who are being purified and the blessed in heaven.” We are not alone! The preface for All Saints, which we celebrate on November 1, begins “For today by your gift we celebrate the festival of your city, the heavenly Jerusalem, our mother.” What astounding words! All Saints Day (like every solemnity) is nothing less than the festival of the fullness of the paschal mystery, our dying and rising in Christ. Of course, now in autumn the mystery comes “clothed” in glorious autumnal garb, and so we celebrate our Easter faith with signs of the harvest, signs of nature’s dying, signs of the “homecoming” that happens naturally when the weather gets cold and families find themselves together more often. While the dying can point to our own mortality, the homecoming reminds us of the mystery of our own resurrection with Christ. —James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

NEVER GROW WEARY by Fr. Ron Rolheiser There is a Norwegian proverb that reads: Heroism consists of hanging on one minute longer. When I was a child in elementary school one of the stories assigned to us in our textbook for literature had that title and It told the story of a young boy who had fallen through the ice while skating and was left clinging, cold and alone, to the edge of the ice with no help in sight. As he hung on in this seemingly hopeless situation he was tempted many times to simply let go since no one was going to come along to rescue him. But he held on, despite all odds. Finally, when everything seemed beyond hope, he clung on one minute longer and after that extra minute help arrived. The story was simple and its moral was simple: This young boy lived because he had the courage and strength to hang on one minute longer. Rescue comes just after you have given up on it, so extend your courage and waiting one minute longer. This is a tale of physical heroism and it makes its point clearly, heroism often consists in staying the course long enough, of hanging on when it seems hopeless, of suffering cold and aloneness while waiting for a new day. Scripture teaches much the same thing about moral heroism: In the Second Letter to the Thessalonians, Paul ends a long, challenging admonition by stating: You must never grow weary of doing what is right. And in his letter to the Galatians, Paul virtually repeats the Norwegian proverb: Let us not become weary of doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. This sounds so simple and yet it cuts to the heart of many of our moral struggles. We give up too soon, give in too soon, and don't carry our solitude to its highest level. We simply don't carry tension long enough. All of us experience tension in our lives: tension in our families, tension in our friendships, tension in our places of work, tension in our churches, tension in our communities, and tension within our conversations around other people, politics, and current events. And, being good-hearted people, we carry that tension with patience, respect, graciousness, and forbearance - for a while! Then, at a certain point we feel ourselves stretched to the limit, grow weary of doing what is right, feel something snap inside of us, and hear some inner-voice say: Enough! I've put up with this too long! I won't tolerate this anymore! And we let go, unlike the little

boy clinging to the ice and waiting for rescue. We let go of patience, respect, graciousness, and forbearance, either by venting and giving back in kind or simply by fleeing the situation with an attitude of good riddance. Either way, we refuse to carry the tension any longer. But that exact point, when we have to choose between giving up or holding on, carrying tension or letting it go, is a crucial moral site, one that determines character: Big-heartedness, nobility of character, deep maturity, and spiritual sanctity often manifest themselves around these questions: How much tension can we carry? How great is our patience and forbearance? How much can we put up with? Mature parents put up with a lot of tension in raising their children. Mature teachers put up with a lot of tension in trying to open the minds and hearts of their students. Mature friends absorb a lot of tension in remaining faithful to each other. Mature young women and men put up with a lot of sexual tension while waiting for marriage. Mature Christians put up with a lot of tension in helping to absorb the immaturities and sins of their churches. Men and women are noble of character precisely when they can walk with patience, respect, graciousness, and forbearance amid crushing and unfair tensions, when they never grow weary of doing what is right. Of course this comes with a caveat: Carrying tension does not mean carrying abuse. Those of noble character and sanctity of soul challenge abuse rather than enable it through well-intentioned acquiescence. Sometimes, in the name of virtue and loyalty, we are encouraged to absorb abuse, but that is antithetical to what Jesus did. He loved, challenged, and absorbed tension in a way that took away the sins of the world. We know now, thanks to long bitter experience, that, no matter how noble our intention, when we absorb abuse as opposed to challenging it, we don't take away the sin, we enable it. But all of this will not be easy. It's the way of long loneliness, with many temptations to let go and slip away. But, if you persevere and never grown weary of doing what is right, at your funeral, those who knew you will be blessed and grateful that you continued to believe in them even when for a time they had stopped believing in themselves.

FOOD PANTRY Thank you to all who continue to support this much needed and appreciated ministry. We are also grateful to the Lyons Township High School Football Team, who recently sponsored a canned food drive for our benefit, to this year’s CROP Walk walkers for their food donations, and to those who participated in the Riverside Feed Our Community Drive, who provided us with 15 boxes of pre-packed meals. As you do your grocery shopping this week, here are a couple of things to remember:

• Most needed items at this time include canned fruit, canned tomatoes, tuna, boxed side dishes, powdered or canned milk and cereal.

• We need to constantly replenish our pantry shelves with staples and extras as our volunteers continue to pack bags for our November 8 monthly food distribution. All in date non-perishables, paper goods, laundry detergent, dish soap, etc. are most appreciated!

GIVING TREE: Stores displaying Christmas decorations and advertisements for gift giving will soon be a common sight. As the season of Thanksgiving and the Holidays approach, we Christians are looking for ways to keep the true meaning of the season alive in our families. One way is to take part in our annual Giving Tree Project, which will begin on the weekend of November 17 and 18. Please watch upcoming Canticles for details. Also, if you or anyone you know in our faith community could benefit from this outreach, please let me know. Your request will be confidential. Mary Beth Ford Director of Social Concerns

“Immediately he received his sight and followed him on the way.” (Mark 10:52) Sight is just one of the many gifts that God has given to us. Like all of our basic senses and talents, sight is a gift we often take for granted. We pat ourselves on the back for our accomplishments, forgetting that whatever we do, we do with the gifts that God has given to us.
