How would you complete this sentence: You know you’re a photographer when…? We’re almost at the end of our 2018-2019 camera club year. Over the past nine months, we’ve had eight full competitions, programs on still life photography, pinhole photography, fine art photography, photographing places of worship, smart phone photography as well as street photography. We’ve had presentations on “breaking the rules”, “the decisive moment”, what constitutes a good photograph, and other topics that help us think when pressing that shutter. Photo Talk Meeting - May 13The Contact Sheet

by Bob Matthews, VP Photo Talk

When we take photos, we very rarely make a single exposure of an scene. Even in the film days, photographers would take multiple images of a scene. And now in the digital age, we can just click-click-click to our hearts content. But then, we need to select which of the multiple images of the same scene to print or share. And this approach is not limited to the newer or less experienced photographers. Even famous photographers have most likely taken multiple exposures of even their iconic images.

To wrap-up Photo Talk for the 2018-2019 club year, we will be looking at the book Contact Sheet by Steve Crist. This book presents the original contact

sheets from over 40 well-known photographers, often including the photographer’s original markings of photographs that they selected and rejected. We will discuss what makes one image stronger, and what makes others weaker, and why the photographer might have chosen the images that they did.

Of course, the bulk of the night will be spent on reviewing of the previous week’s competition photos. We’ll discuss not only the prize winners, but we will go over everyone’s photos. For you novices in the club, this is a good chance to get feedback on your images. Plus, it a good chance to practice looking at images critically.

Slate of Officers for the 2019-2020 season

by Roz Kleffman

There are four positions to vote on for club officers in May. One of these positions is the treasurer which was vacated by John Allender when he moved. As discussed at our weekly club meetings, the slate of officers includes:

VP Program - Catherine Shepperd (continuing in her role)

VP Competition - Roz Kleffman

Secretary - Wanda Jenifer

Treasurer- Monica Hawse

Karen Ackermann has agreed to take on the role of competition assistant.

The election will take place at the program meeting on May 20, 2019.

B-CCC Dessert and Awards NightCome and enjoy the party!

by Leslie Ferrari

The final meeting of the club year will be held on Monday, June 10 in All Saint’s Church at our usual start time of 7:30 p.m. We will again be enjoying a dessert pot luck. No sign up needed; just bring a dessert or libation to share. The club will supply water, coffee, tea, and paper goods.

While we indulge in tasty treats, Dick Chomitz will announce the club year awards. In addition, we will

enjoy a slide show of photos entered into the End of Year Competition. The evening will culminate with the awarding of the coveted award for Photographer of the Year.

See you there for an enjoyable evening of delectable desserts, award winning photos and enjoyable companionship!

Competition CornerApril 1 Competition Results

by Dick Chomitz, VP Competition

More Competition Results on page 5.

The Novice Nature Trophy was awarded to Tiara Washington during this competition for the best in show Novice Nature image. Congratulation to Tiara Washington for the winning entry in Nature, “Amongst Friends”. The competition theme for April 1, 2019 was Nature. The total number of entries was 162, by 84 photographers. Our judge for the evening was Scott Dine, providing his insight from the newspaper prospective. Also, thanks to the many club members who helped the evening go smoothly – those who set up and cleaned up the meeting hall; those who accepted and handled the prints, and our projectionist who ran the digital competition. Without these people there would be no competition. Congratulations to the winners of the Nature Competition. Keep up the great work. We ask that competitors follow these few procedures to help ensure that prints are handled smoothly and efficiently:• Digital entries need titles (names, not file numbers).• Have your entry slip filled out completely before

stepping up to the table to submit your prints. We recommend printing the entry form from the B-CCC website. It is found under the competition tab. There is a date window on the entry form which will provide you the correct date if you press the

“down” arrow. • To help the competitions run smoothly, the

Competition Committee strongly suggests the following order of required information, written legibly on the back upper-left of each print: 1st line: Class and Category (e.g. Adv. Monochrome, Novice Color). 2nd line: Photographer’s name (as it appears on the club membership roster). 3rd line: Title of the image.

• Make sure to include an UP arrow and the submission class (Novice or Advanced) on the back of each print, to the right of the above information.

• When reusing mounting, remove any extraneous notation including labels, etc. Exception: Honorable Mention winners which are entered into a second monthly competition, and all Award Winners entered into the End-of-Year competition, must leave the original award label attached until those competitions are completed.

• Make sure the information on the back of your prints is legible and dark enough to be read in dim light.

Don’t submit double-matted prints. The theme for May 6 will be “Open”, and will be judged by Jerry Weinstein.

Program Meeting - May 20Les Picker – Fine Art Photography

by Catherine Sheppard, VP Programs

Our May Speaker is Les Picker, a professional writer and nature landscape photographer, whose accomplishments include more than 650 published credits in major magazines (including National Geographic), newspapers and books. He has been awarded the prestigious Canada Northern Lights Award for Best Travel Photographer. He is a Moab Master Photographer and recognized for his skill in fine art printmaking. In fact, Les is a Master Photographer for Museo Fine Arts papers and holds printing workshops for small groups (no more than six) in his Havre de Grace studio. In addition, Picker leads photography tours worldwide and lectures on the subject of

May Field Trip75th Anniversary of D-Day in Dover, Delaware

by Dena Selby, Field Trip Leader

NOTE: This field trip will take place on the same day as the previously scheduled field trip to the Old Luckett’s Store, which has been cancelled.

The Air Mobility Command Museum is having a Commemoration of the 75th Anniversary of D-Day on Saturday, May 4, 2019. They are paying tribute to the men, their sacrifices and the history, with many events planned for the day.

Events will include up to 200 personnel parachute drops from a C-17 Globemaster III and a C-130 Hercules by the 82nd Airborne Division. A historical aircraft, That’s All, Brother, will be on display at the AMC Museum. It was the lead C-47 Skytrain of the 800 aircraft that dropped two American airborne divisions into France on D-Day. In conjunction with the C-17 and C-130 paratrooper jumps, the Liberty Jump Team will be jumping from That’s All, Brother. There will be

historical presentations and reenactors covering the D-Day operation throughout the day. Following the day’s exciting ground and air events, a swing dance with 1940s music will be performed by the Smooth Sound Big Band from Milford, Delaware.

The event will be held at the AMC Museum, 1301 Heritage Rd, Dover, Delaware, and is free to the public with gates opening at 9:00 a.m.

I have reserved 4 rooms at Microtel Inn and Suites for Friday, May 3. This is one of the closest hotels to the Museum. Seems all the hotels know about this event, so the prices skyrocketed for this weekend and each room (two queens, nonsmoking) is approximately $154.00 which includes tax. Split between two people is $77.00/person. Price subject to change if you are not an AARP member. Their phone number is 302-674-3800.

B-CCC Competition Themes for 2019-2020

Dates shown are the first Mondays of the month, excepting holidays. They are subject to change if conflicts arise. Keep in mind that the examples given below are suggestions only; they need not be followed exactly or

exclusively, but you must exclude anything noted as not permitted in the descriptions.

October 7, 2019 - OPEN

Anytime, anywhere, any topic.

November 4, 2019 - LOOKING UP

Camera angle must be noticeably above the horizontal, up through a vertical shot. Lie on the ground or other low surface and look up at what’s around you for things that aren’t normally thought of as tall, such as a mailbox, car,

or another person. Kneel or stand for subjects that are already high up, such as clouds, planes, kites, trees, tall buildings, up a flight of stairs.

December 2, 2019 - STILL LIFE

Painters of still-life compositions included natural objects along with dead animals (“still life”) such as ducks or rabbits killed during the hunt. For this composition, dead animals, birds, bugs, and the like, are not required,

but are permitted. Focus on a nicely composed image featuring natural objects such as plants, leaves, feathers, pine cones, vegetables, fruit, and the like. No people are permitted in the image. Keep human-made objects to a

minimum.

January 6, 2020 - EYES

Human, animal, insect; so-called (e.g., peacock’s tail feathers, potato); artificial, real; a created or manipulated impression of one or more eyes (whether meant to represent a real eye or to suggest the appearance of an eye). Other body parts may be shown (such as the entire head), but the eyes must be the primary focus of the image.

Parting Shot

The Carenage in St. George’s, Grenada , is a scenic horseshoe-like harbor and a nice place for a stroll along the water’s edge, with colorful fishing boats and the bustle of local produce being loaded for other islands. The name “Carenage” recalls a time when this protected bay was where wooden ships were periodically beached to allow the cleaning of barnacles from the hull. Today, the Carenage is an area with many mixed businesses, cafes, and restaurants at the waterfront, and is one of the most picturesque harbors in the Caribbean. The Carenage was previously the point of arrival for cruise and cargo ships. Now, a new and larger deep-water port has been built on the western side of St. George’s, to facilitate cruise ships. Cargo ships continue to use the old (now renovated) harbor on the Carenage.
