Reflecting on the Word The gospel of Jesus is a gospel of grace. The new law that Jesus gives is not a written code, it is the Holy Spirit who works within us to transform us into God’s children, adopted into God’s family not because of our own merits but out of God’s abundant love. This does not mean that the gospel of Jesus places no demands on us; if anything the new law of Christ is more stringent than the law of Moses. It calls not simply for outward conformity, but rather for an inward transformation in which we are conformed to God’s Spirit, the Spirit who, as Paul says in the second reading, “scrutinizes everything, even the depths of God.” We all know that it is much easier to go through the motions and grudgingly obey a rule that it is to truly grasp the reason for the rule and let it become part of the fabric of our lives. A child might simply follow a rule to avoid pun-ishment or to obtain a reward, but with maturity and life experience comes an appreciation for the reason behind the rule. The new law requires the hard work of inner transfor-mation, by which we grow into the wisdom and spiritual maturity of which Paul speaks. What Jesus ultimately asks is that we let his Spirit work within us. - from “Living the Word”

Welcome New Parishioners!
Our parish continues to be blessed and enriched by the presence of new parishioners:
Salvatore & Luisa Galea
May St. Veronica Church become a spiritual home where your faith and fellowship may be nourished with inspiration for you to live a life of service and generosity toward God and others.
From the Pastor’s Desk Dear Parishioners,
Archbishop’s Annual Appeal (AAA): We are start-ing the third week of the month-long drive of AAA. You may have seen the names of all the donors for AAA 2014 in the bulletin. We are making steady pro-gress, but without your help we cannot accomplish it. Last week at all the Masses, after the homily, Anne and Carlos Rocha spoke reminding us of the need for AAA in our support for the Archbishop’s ministries. This weekend, Suzette and Bill Lunsford will be speaking after the homily at each Mass. I thank these couples for their generosity in spending time for the parish and the Archdiocese and for sharing their thoughts on AAA with the whole parish. I encourage and urge everyone to participate in AAA so that we can make a success of this project once again. As I said before, if everyone could think about a minimum AAA donation of $100 to $200, it would be fantastic! Any excess funds will be directed toward the Capital Campaign to pave and beautify our property.
Crab Bash: Events such as this bring people together and build up community and friendships. I thank the Men’s Club and Naomi Marquez and her team along with the 7th Grade parents who worked hard to make this event successful. Keep up the good work! I also want to acknowledge the successful Crab Bash dinners arranged in the previous years by Rita Buscher, Vicki Ottoboni, and their team. As St. Paul would say in 1Corinthians12, we are all many parts but one body. We all have different roles and services, different tal-ents and gifts, but we are all one body, united in Christ and with one another, for the wellbeing of this com-munity we call St. Veronica.
Confirmation Commitment Masses: Having com-pleted their weekend retreat the previous week, at three different Masses last weekend, the Confirmation candidates voiced their “commitment” in front of the congregation that they would be open and receive the Spirit and live according to the call of Christ in their lives. They also agreed to practice the Catholic faith by attending the Eucharistic celebrations. While they may be earnest in all these undertakings, as you know, it takes a village to help and guide the young. At the least, it takes the family to inspire these young men and women and nudge them toward where the Holy Spirit will take them in the future. Parents and other close relatives would do well in providing space and time for such basic Catholic practices so that these young men and women would keep hearing God’s word, partake of the Body of Christ (Eucharist), and be part of the body of Christ we call the Church. They
are all looking forward to their Confirmation on Febru-ary 23rd with Bishop McElroy.
Prospective Kindergarten Families: At the 9:30 a.m. Mass last Sunday, the prospective Kindergarten par-ents were present. It was an opportunity for them to see our faith-filled Eucharistic celebration. Following the Mass, there was a reception and meeting in Falcon Hall. At the meeting, the principal Mrs. Lucchesi and vice-principal Mrs. Ruegg (who is also the Kindergar-ten teacher) spoke. In my remarks, I spoke to them about how our school is not a private school but a Catholic, parish school and participates in the faith life of the parish. I encouraged them to be open to a renew-al of faith which their own children will go through in the school and parish. I also pointed out the various opportunities and ministries through which they could be engaged, committed, and practicing Catholics. I mentioned that the parish needs their time, talents, and financial donations to keep our parish strong in faith and service.
Word of God: In the Sermon on the Mount in Mat-thew’s gospel, we see Jesus giving us some “antitheses.” There are certain do’s and don’ts in the Old Testament, but Jesus says that as his followers, people have to be more generous and even radical in love, service, and forgiveness. We cannot stay with the don’ts, but we have to positively give of ourselves for life and love, not just for us but for everyone in the world. In the first reading, the choices God places are listed: water and fire, life and death, good and evil. What do we choose in life? How does the call of Christ impact our daily lives so that we could keep choosing what he wants us to choose?
Food for Thought: A Short Course in Human Rela-tions: The six most important words: “I admit that I was wrong.” The five most important words: “You did a great job.” The four most important words: “What do you think?” The three most important words: “Could you please. . .” The two most important words: “Thank you.” The most important word: “We.” The least im-portant word: “I”.
Catholic Joke: A kindergarten teacher asked a little girl what she was drawing. The girl replied, “I'm draw-ing God.” The teacher paused and said, “But no one knows what God looks like.” Without looking up from her drawing, the girl replied, “They will in a mi-nute.”
