“Artists in April ”

Dear Friends,
Welcome to Art for Life’s 5th Annual Benefit Concert. We hope that you will find the concert entertaining and that we send pleasure to each of you.
Art for Life’s Sake is grateful for your continuous support of its programs and events that are aimed at building youth assets. We like to think that “we create and you support.” As many of you are aware, developing and performing musical talents promote communication, creativity, cooperation, and problem-solving. Your support for music education and the arts also impact students in other ways such as:
• building self-confidence and strengthening identity development
• improving math and science skills
• improving study, communication and cognitive skills
• encouraging self-knowledge and self-expression
• building self-discipline and responsibilities
If you, too, believe that this is the kind of impact we need for Memphis youth, visit AFLS website and make a donation. Also, join AFLS as an ambassador to support its mission. All you will need to do is to know and communicate AFLS’ mission, “to provide music education and arts access for the under-served,” at each opportunity.
Most sincerely yours,

These young musicians perform a variety of themes at different venues in the community. More recent themes focused on “Instruments in Hands – Not Guns” and “Instruments of Peace” to help build a non-violent community. These themes, integrated with music, promote personal-social-emotional wellness. For more information, visit www.artforlifessake.org or contact the director at 901.240.3349.
The student musicians develop their musical talents from the outstanding teaching artists Portia Furlow, Philip Joyner, and Ann Spurbeck.
Shun Ross (Born Lashundra Ross) began singing in the church choir at the age of 10. In the course of her high school career, she was trained by the noted musical great Gayle Jones Murphy. After high school, Shun joined and recorded with the national recording choir, “The Voices of Binghampton,” now known as “Kevin Davidson and The Voices.” Shun has sung with numerous well known recording artists such as Daryl Coley, Yolanda Adams, Kirk Franklin, Kurt Carr, and others. Shun is a practicing hair designer. She performs for various faith-based, social and civic organizations upon request.
Arthur Hart is a graduate of the Juilliard School and the Vienna Music Academy. Acclaimed by the New York Times as “unquestionably a name to watch for,” he has won top prizes in major piano competitions, including the American Chopin Competition. Extensive performances nationally and abroad have included cycles of Beethoven’s 32 Piano Sonatas, his Symphonies, Bach’s Well-Tempered Klavier, and Chopin’s 24 Etudes. Also a composer, his original music has been heard internationally. He has held positions as opera director, and in education, presently working with University of Memphis’ Music Department. Stay tuned for latest releases of a live Chopin Tribute, performed on the Horowitz piano, as well as numbers from his original score-”The Cosmic Ladybug.”

Percussionist Steve Black got his first drum set at the age of 8. He is a songwriter and multi-instrumentalist who is drawn to acoustic experimentation. In addition to the cajon and various percussion instruments, Steve plays guitar, bass, and Native American flute. When he’s not playing music he is an English teacher and a yoga instructor.
Beverly Elliotte Vance received her Bachelor of Music Education degree and Master of Music in flute performance from the University of Memphis. She has served as Principal flutist with the Memphis Civic Orchestra, President of the Mid-South Flute Society, is a member of The Flute Sisters trio, and is a duo partner with her guitarist husband, Howard. Beverly teaches flute and Native American flute at their studio, the Howard Vance Guitar Academy. The Vances perform, instruct, and currently have nine CDs and 40 books to their credit.
Classical Guitarist Howard Vance has studied, performed, taught, and composed for five decades. His primary influence was classical guitarist Bunyan Webb. Mr. Vance received his Master’s degree in music theory and composition from the University of Memphis in 1974, and opened Howard Vance Guitar Academy the same year. The school serves as an outlet for his many arrangements, publications, recordings, and instructional methods.

MissionArt for Life’s Sake believes that every child is creative and talented and should be nurtured in an environment that promotes the arts,
talent development and expression for an enriched childhood and productive future.
Many children, especially those of color, have limited access and exposure to the arts due to cutbacks in program offering,
particularly in urban areas. The mission of Art for Life’s Sake is to provide music education and arts access for the under-served.
