Age, digital divides and bridging the gap.

Before we watch the humorous & inspiring YouTube clip from the USA, discuss with your ‘neighbour’ the points below.

This is a rapid ‘pre-watch’ stage of video work – Timed activity • Turn to the person sitting next to you, and ‘pair up’ to discuss… • Think about older ‘pre-digital’ people in your community, country & context…. • Do they elders have access to the internet, smart phones or feature phones? • If the elders had access, what do you think they would want to learn first? • What aspect of the internet or computer would be most interesting for them? • Who would be best to teach the elders? • How does ‘community care’ differ in your country compared to the USA?

Now let’s watch the clip – while we watch keep your ideas in mind

After you watch Now compare your original thoughts with your partner or neighbour • Were any of your ideas similar? • What did the cyber seniors want to learn? • What did the teenagers learn? • Who was teaching them in ‘passenger <> driver’ mode? • Is this model possible and applicable in your community? • My country doesn’t have senior learning centres or access to PCs! • What can I do? How can I make this relevant? What hardware is available? • Discuss with your partner an inter-generational ‘possibility’ for your community?

• Now let’s listen to a couple of pairs and share a few ideas? • What about FaceBook? Would this be a good starting space?

Now tell us about your intergenerational idea, for your community?

Avoiding the technology façade – first steps

www.britishcouncil.org 11

Millions of Baby Boomers now turning 65+, have found themselves with little or no access to technology. While some may have limited experience with the technology so many of us take for granted today, others struggle to understand associated vocabulary, e.g. Google, click, download, drag, drop and delete! Associated with our tech world.

How do over 60s feel about

technology in your

community ?

Many elders feel left out of society. What can we do?

The 17 Sustainable Development Goals - SDGs

www.britishcouncil.org 16

SDGs are the set of 17 agreed goals which all 193 UN member states have committed to that will guide policy and funding for the next 15 years. According to the World Bank, around 1 billion people still live in extreme poverty and more than 800 million people do not have enough food to eat. From 2016, all UN member states will mobilise efforts to end all forms of poverty, fight inequalities and tackle climate change, while ensuring that no one is left behind.

Disney have recorded the better known stories but local stories in lesser known languages, like Welsh from my village in the Welsh hills – The Lady of Llyn y Fan Fach are only known locally.

I thought UNESCO would love my idea to create e-books to preserve these stories in a digital format that could be seen by anyone anywhere we could include so many intergenerational and learning activities.

Video

How many of you have a local folk story?

Page 19: “Age is an issue ‘Bridging the Digital age gap to ...€¦ · Mobile apps TeachingEnglish LearnEnglish LearnEnglish Kids LearnEnglish Teens ... fight inequalities and tackle climate

Specific objectives of the e-book project

To present and preserve folk and fairy tales in digital format as innovative educational material.

Enabling people all over the world to learn the folk history and culture of other countries.

e-books will be dual language with written and audio text – both languages spoken by a first language speakers. Initially in English and in the mother tongue

It is technically possible to offer community generated stories in any combination of languages.

Community social objectives Increased social integration; using ICT as the bridge to reunite

the generations, encouraging greater respect for skills and knowledge of all generations.

To demonstrate how communities can unite to preserve and present their local history, culture and traditions. All ages working together to create an innovative multi faceted educational tool, using digital technologies.

To generate income for sustainability of the project and communities involved in the creation!

When an e-book is ready for publication, it is a product ready to be offered via the internet - to people all over the world. No printing costs, no dead trees and no distribution costs.

However, e-books can be printed if the community requires

www.britishcouncil.org 20

Page 21: “Age is an issue ‘Bridging the Digital age gap to ...€¦ · Mobile apps TeachingEnglish LearnEnglish LearnEnglish Kids LearnEnglish Teens ... fight inequalities and tackle climate

Content and creation of e-book Find your local story and rewrite in modern vernacular

Each folktale will start with an introduction, giving its origin.

Translate into English, which will then be edited by first language English speaker.

Illustrations & local photography – all ages can be involved’ You could run a local competition to choose the illustrations – to generate publicity and discover more local talent

Music – written or just performed

Drama – a play of the story can be performed locally – lots of scope for intergenerational activity creating or sourcing props and costumes

Filming the drama - you can also include a film of how the community came together to do this.
