ief FIRST FOALS FOR EQUIANO
The first Swettenham Stud-bred foals by Equiano (Acclamation) are on the ground at Adam Sangster’s Nagambie nursery. Equiano has arrived at Swettenham for his second Southern hemisphere book and will stand for an ‘early-bird’ fee of $13,000 (inc GST). Equiano and his first foals will be on show at the Swettenham Stud stallion parade this Sunday.
BODEMEISTER RETIREDThe Grade One winner Bodemeister (Empire Maker), who was second in the Kentucky Derby (Gr 1, 10f) and Preakness Stakes (Gr 1, 9.5f) has been retired from racing and will stand at stud at WinStar Farm. “Bodemeister has a peripheral nerve injury which caused atrophy of the infraspinatus muscle in his left shoulder,” said Dr Larry Bramlage, specialist from Rood and Riddle Equine Hospital. “Obviously, this made us look at something unusual, rather than a normal lameness. DUNDEEL is the latestGroup winning prospect for the
sire of SO YOU THINK
Race watchers on Wednesday would no doubt agree that High Chaparral(IRE) has his next star in the making after watching the performance ofexciting colt Dundeel [at Wyong in a very competitive restricted event forthree-year-olds over 1350 metres].The Murray Baker trained colt showed real potential when scoring an easydebut win at Ellerslie back in April over 1200 metres and was immediatelysent to the paddock with a spring campaign in mind.Dundeel is very true to the High Chaparral (IRE) type and looks a greatcandidate to continue his sire's great record with three year-olds….SOURCE: WWW.BREEDNET.COM.AU, 22 AUGUST 2012

his new environment and appears in great shape after fulfilling his
quarantine requirements.
Emirates Park nominations manager Bryan Carlson reported: “It’s
very exciting to see him arrive on the property. He is exactly how I
thought he would be – an outstanding looking horse.”
Carlson added: “It’s also great to see him in such good shape as he
has his first inspections booked for early on Thursday morning. As you’d
expect from a horse of his calibre, the interest in Dream Ahead has
been very strong and there are plenty of breeders booked to inspect
him over the coming weekend.”
The seven-time Grade One winner Gio Ponti (Tale Of The Cat) has
arrived safely from North America to Arrowfield Stud, where he will
stand this season for a fee of $22,000 inc GST.
Arrowfield’s John Messara said, “Gio Ponti’s superlative record will
stamp him one of the all-time great American turf horses.
“His athleticism, good looks and Tale of the Cat’s proven compatibility
with Australasian bloodlines make him a very exciting addition to our
roster.”
So You Think (High Chaparral), who will stand his first season at
Coolmore Australia for a fee of $66,000, has arrived back on Australian
soil, along with the American Champion Juvenile Uncle Mo (Indian
Charlie), whose first season fee will be $24,200.
“The horses have arrived in great condition and it’s an exciting time
with such an array of quality horses returning,” commented Coolmore
Australia General Manager Michael Kirwan.
“So You Think is the most desirable stallion prospect to retire to this
country in many a season and it’s great to have him back here again.
He’s just a beautiful horse and has clearly taken his trip down here
well, as you’d expect of a horse with such an admirable constitution,”
said Kirwan.
“We are very much looking forward to showing these horses off to
our clients at our parades on Sunday and I really believe that Uncle
Mo is a horse that everyone will be talking about afterwards. He’s an
outstanding specimen – a big, strong, fast looking horse with great
quality,” added Kirwan.
The Darley shuttle sires, including the new recruits Sepoy (Elusive
Quality), Helmet (Exceed And Excel) and Poet’s Voice (Dubawi), as well
as Lonhro (Octagonal), Exceed And Excel (Danehill), New Approach
(Galileo) and Hard Spun (Danzig) have all arrived back in Australia
ahead of this year’s covering season.

DUNDEEL IMPRESSES AT wYONGNew Zealand colt Dundeel (High Chaparral) will head towards the Spring

SHE’S A FOX INJUREDExciting filly She’s A Fox (Fastnet Rock) is out for the spring after she injured a ligament at the back of a knee. “We could have pushed on and treated it but she’s too good a filly to risk,” said trainer Anthony Cummings. “We took the conservative view in dealing with it. She will have some treatment and she’ll be out for three months and come back in the autumn,” he added.
REKINKLED ALLIANCE DIESThe Paul Messara-trained multiple Group placegetter Rekindled Alliance (Redoute’s Choice) collapsed and died from a heart attack shortly after completing trackwork on Wednesday morning. “Stable star Rekindled Alliance passed away this morning. He had a heart attack shortly after finishing his work. The stable is devastated,” said Paul Messara.
MUFASA FAVOURITEMufhasa (Pentire), a $3.50 favourite for Saturday week’s Makfi Challenge Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) at Hawkes Bay, worked nicely yesterday in an exhibition gallop on a heavy track at Ruakaka. “He started at
the 1200m mark and travelled 1000m in what was a pleasing effort on a tough track,” said trainer Stephen McKee.
AFSARE POSSIBLE FOR COX PLATETrainer Luca Cumani will decide in the next fortnight if Afsare (Dubawi), runner-up in the Arlington Million (Gr 1, 10f) in Chicago last Saturday, comes to Melbourne for this year’s Cox Plate (Gr 1, 2040m) at Moonee Valley on 27 October. “It’s possible that he might come for the Cox Plate but we need to see how he comes out of the race and how he trains in the next couple of weeks before making a final decision,” Cumani said.
FRANKEL STEPS UP wITH EASEWorld Champion Frankel (4c Galileo - Kind by Danehill) took a step up in trip with ease, scoring a seven length victory over Farhh (Pivotal) and St Nicholas Abbey (Montjeu) in the Juddmonte International (Gr 1, 1m2f) on the first day of York’s Ebor Festival. Jockey Tom Queally, who has ridden Frankel in all of his races, said, “It is unbelievable. It was special today as everybody really
got behind him and the Yorkshire crowd really appreciated him being here. Going that quick a pace helped as there was no funny business. It was end-to-end we were racing and the best horse won and he won comprehensively.” Frankel has now beaten the record of Rock Of Gibraltar (Danehill) with his eighth successive Group One victory.
FIRST STAKES wINNER FOR DEFENCEDundonnell (2c ex Family by Danzig) was the first stakes winner for his sire First Defence (Unbridled’s Song) when winning the Acomb Stakes (Gr 3, 7f) at York yesterday. First Defence stood for a fee of US$7,500 at Juddmonte’s Kentucky base this season.
wORTHY SCORES FIRST GROUP VICTORYThe John Gosden-trained Thought Worthy (3c Dynaformer – Vignette by Diesis) was the pillar to post winner of the Great Voltigeur Stakes (Gr 2, 1m4f) at York yesterday, beating the favourite Main Sequence (Aldebaran). The three-year-old, who is owned and was bred by George Strawbridge, won the Fairway Stakes (Listed, 1m2f) at Newmarket in May.

racing newsSecret Admirer Starts Caulfield Cup Campaign
Dual Group One winner Secret Admirer (Dubawi)
resumes in the Warwick Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) at
Warwick Farm on Saturday as the first step in a
campaign geared towards the Caulfield Cup (Gr 1,
2400m) on 20 October.
She has not won beyond 1600m but Secret Admirer has shown
connections enough at her only two starts beyond that journey to
come under consideration for the Caulfield Cup.
“Because she gets well weighted in that race we felt it was
time to try her over 2400m. She ran fifth in the Cox Plate and
third in the Queen Elizabeth so we’ve got a little bit of an inkling
that she will handle it,” said trainer Grahame Begg.
Reflecting the fact she will be aimed at longer races, Secret
Admirer will resume over 1400m for the first time on Saturday.
Her other first-up runs have been over shorter journeys and she
has been placed in all three.
Secret Admirer has not raced since third to More Joyous (More
Than Ready) and Manighar (Linamix) in the Queen Elizabeth
Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) at Randwick on 28 April.
Along with the Peter Moody-trained Lights Of Heaven (Zabeel),
Secret Admirer will be striving to become the first mare to win the
Warwick Stakes since Private Steer (Danehill Dancer) in 2004.
The Missile Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) winner Pinwheel (Lonhro)
was favourite with the NSW TAB at $2.90 ahead of Gai
Waterhouse-trained former New Zealander Rock`N’ Pop (Fastnet
Rock) at $5.50 with Secret Admirer and Lights Of Heaven both
at $8.00.

Finalists for the 2012 Tabcorp Victorian Thoroughbred
Employee of the Year awards were announced yesterday.
The annual awards recognise industry participants who
have worked behind the scenes to support their employer
and stable within the racing industry and will be announced at the
Moonee Valley race meeting on Saturday.
“We are extremely excited to be offering these awards, with the
support of Tabcorp, for these unsung heroes often go unnoticed.
But it is their passion, dedication and skills which are crucial to the
continued success of Victoria’s thoroughbred racing industry,” said
Bernard Saundry, Racing Victoria CEO.
This year’s awards are for employees for the 2011-12 racing
season, who will vie for a $1,000 cheque in each of four categories,
spanning full and part time employees, track rider and new staff
member.
Category winners will then be in contention for the top award, the
Tabcorp Victorian Thoroughbred Employee of the Year title, with the
winner receiving $5,000.

“He will undoubtedly have
a strong and lasting
impact on the European
bloodstock industry.”
The words of Georges Rimaud, manager
of the Aga Khan Studs in France pertaining
to Redoute’s Choice (Danehill) and the
announcement last week that the dual
Champion Sire will shuttle to Europe next
year.
Recognised not only as a great stallion
with his 89 stakes winners, including 21 Group
One winners, Redoute’s Choice has well and
truly been making his mark as a sire of sires
– already ten of his sons have sired stakes
winners.
Six of those – Stratum (Crystal Lily,
Streama), Snitzel (Sizzling), Not A Single
Doubt (Always Certain), Duelled (Shootoff),
Bradbury’s Luck (Luckygray) and Fast ‘N’
Famous (Quintessential) have sired Group One
winners and this is an encouraging sign as not
all of those stallions were themselves winners
at the elite level.
There was for a long time a widely held
belief that a strong sire line struggled to survive
beyond five generations but with the modern
stallion siring such large numbers of progeny
there are greater opportunities to produce sire
sons.
If such a theory was to hold true, Redoute’s
Choice would not be faring as well as he is –
being a member of an old sire line (Danehill –
Danzig – Northern Dancer – Nearctic – Nearco
– Pharos, etc) that continues to thrive.
It seems that the decision to shuttle
Redoute’s Choice at this late stage of his
career (he turned 16 a few weeks ago) may
not only be for European breeders to make the
most of his worth as a stallion – but also for his
proven ability to sire a sire.
Hailing from one of the world’s great
stallion families – being a descendant of the
great Best In Show (Traffic Judge), Redoute’s
Choice is a stallion whose sons fare well with a
wide range of mares.
As with Redoute’s Choice, his sons love
Star Kingdom – including Bletchingly (Biscay),
whose son Canny Lad is Redoute’s Choice’s
dam sire. Not A Single Doubt (Squamosa and
Unanimously), Stratum (Éclair Mystic) and
Snitzel (Salade) have all sired stakes winners
line-bred to Bletchingly, whilst there have
been another 11 stakes winners by Redoute’s
Choice’s sons with other strains of Bletchingly’s
sire Biscay (Star Kingdom) in their dam lines –
five of those through Marscay.
Redoute’s Choice’s sons also thrive with
Sir Tristram (Sir Ivor) with 11 stakes winners
– including the Group One winners Streama,
Always Certain, Luckygray and Shootoff – bred
on this cross.
Redoute’s Choice’s sire Danehill (Danzig)
has thrived when Northern Dancer is duplicated
and his son and grandsons are continuing this
tradition.
Some 28 (including seven Group One
winners) of the 46 stakes winners sired by
Redoute’s Choice stallions to date feature
multiple strains of Northern Dancer within five
generations – Nijinsky II the most prevalent
followed by Sadler’s Wells and Danehill’s sire
Danzig.
Danzig’s reputation as a line-breeding
subject is growing and it is only a matter of
time before we see more and more horses
line-bred to Danehill – noting that already
two of Redoute’s Choice’s stakes winning
granddaughters – Single Spice (Not A Single
Doubt) and Darlington Abbey (Stratum) are
line-bred to him.
With the Redoute’s Choice/Last Tycoon
cross working so well, it is not surprising that
breeders have been trying this into the next
generation. Last Tycoon’s sire Try My Best
(Northern Dancer) is a grandson of Best In
Show who boasts an outstanding strike rate
as a line-breeding force.
Stakes winners Dances On Stars (Snitzel)
and Cheyenne Warrior (Not A Single Doubt) are
both out of Last Tycoon line mares. Meanwhile
Bradbury’s Luck’s Listed-winning daughter
Ringa Ringa Rosie is out of a granddaughter
of El Gran Senor (Northern Dancer) – Try My
Best’s brother.

Dancer line and Redoute’s Choice’s sons
are no exception with eight stakes winners
(including last weekend’s San Domenico
Stakes (Gr 3, 1100m) winner Snitzerland)
bred on this cross.
Mares carrying a strain of Vain (Wilkes)
have also fared nicely with Redoute’s Choice’s
sons with six stakes winners. Three of those,
including the Golden Slipper (Gr 1, 1200m)
heroine Crystal Lily are by Stratum, whose
second dam sire is Vain.
Roberto (Hail To Reason) also pops up in
the female lines of a number of the stakes
winners by Redoute’s Choice stallions – five
including this year’s Queensland Oaks (Gr
1, 2400m) winner Quintessential (Fast ‘N’
Famous).
Relatives Mill Reef (Never Bend) and
Blushing Groom (Red God) have between
them appeared in the dam lines of five of
Redoute’s Choice’s sons stakes winners.
elite elle tuRns foRtunes ARound“Only 18 wins to go!” joked trainer Tony Vasil to
the owners of exciting filly Elite Elle (Shamardal
– Mystic Elle by Encosta De Lago) after her
fourth win (Quezette Stakes, Listed 1100m)
from as many starts at Caulfield last Saturday.
She may have a long way to go to emulate
the deeds of fellow unbeaten mare Black Caviar
(Bel Esprit) but her owners, including breeders
Danny and Carol Watson are enjoying the ride
so far.
And it is deserved success, their mare
Mystic Elle having endured more of her share
of bad luck losing two of her first three foals in
tragic circumstances.
Her first by Fasliyev (Nureyev) suffered from
internal injuries when stood on by its dam, while
her third foal by Tale Of The Cat (Storm Cat)
failed to recover from injuries sustained when
getting its head through a fence.
Showing the resilience of all breeders of
the thoroughbred, the Watsons persevered
with sending Mystic Elle to high quality stallions
and to date she has rewarded them with three
winners from as many to race.
The first of those, True Tales (Tale Of The
Cat) looked very good winning his first four starts
including two at Moonee Valley – but ultimately
proved disappointing.
“He just didn’t grow between two and
three,” Danny Watson recalled.
Also finding form quickly was Mystic Elle’s
next foal Classic Elle (Reset) was a second-
up winner and stakes placed twice during her
debut campaign last spring.
Looking set for a successful autumn after
an impressive first up victory at Moonee Valley
in March, Classic Elle was unfortunately injured
two starts later – found to have a “slightly
fractured pelvis.”
Currently undergoing rehabilitation with
Matthew Feiss, Classic Elle is expected back
at Tony Vasil’s stables within the next couple
of weeks.
Liking the Storm Cat (Storm Bird) line for
Mystic Elle, Watson chose Shamardal (Giant’s
Causeway) as her mate in 2008 – Elite Elle the
result.
The 13th stakes winner for Encosta De Lago
(Fairy King) as a broodmare sire, Elite Elle hails
from a good winning family, her dam five-time
half-sister to the Group One placed Cancanelle
(Danehill Dancer).
Mystic Elle’s dam Richelle (Century) – also
grandam of the Group placed Gail (Bianconi)
- is a daughter of the Listed winning juvenile
Rich Habit (Karaman) from a family that has
produced two stakes winners in recent years –
Paprika (General Nediym) and Streetcar Magic
(Blevic).
This is a family – one that descends from the
influential Teppo (Ladas) – that has produced
high-class horses for generations.
The second stakes winner bred on a
Storm Cat/Encosta De Lago cross (the New
Zealand Listed winner Minnaloushka by
Black Minnaloushe the first), Elite Elleboasts
an interesting pedigree with a 5 X 4 cross of
Northern Dancer (Nearctic) supported by a
strain of that legendary stallion’s lesser known
brother Northern Native – Mystic Elle’s third
dam sire.
Shamardal is out of a mare by Machiavellian
(Mr Prospector), another member of the
Northern Dancer family – meaning that Elite Elle
carries three different strains of the wonderful
mare Natalma (Native Dancer).
And even more of this family through
Shamardal’s 5 X 4 cross of Halo (Hail To
Reason).
Also of interest is a 7 X 6 cross of the
Kentucky Oaks (Gr 1, 9f) heroine Lalun
(Djeddah), whose sons Bold Reason (Hail To
Reason) and Never Bend (Nasrullah) have
proven a remarkable force when bought
together – the pair combining in the pedigrees
of at least 47 stakes winners.
There are other interesting forces at work
within Elite Elle’s pedigree – including a 4 X 5
cross of Mr Prospector (Raise A Native) and a
background duplication of the fine mare Pasqua
(Donatello II) through her English Derby (Gr 1,
1m4f) winning son Pinza (Chanteur II) and her
descendant Karaman (Karayar).
Currently in foal to Bernardini (A P Indy), by
whom she has a yearling colt, Mystic Elle will be
served this spring by New Approach (Galileo).

strongly approaching the home turn, he managed to dash clear at
the 500m mark and despite veering out in the final stages, went on
to win well in the heavy conditions by two lengths.

bend. The filly then raced away in the straight to win by four and
three quarter lengths in a smart 57.39. Favourite kuchinskaya,
who finished second, was annoyed in the lead by third-placed Alley
Miss, who was pulling a bit. They had no answer to the winner’s late
run and fought out the minor placings with a half neck separating
them.

Analysis: The New Zealander Dundeel made an impressive
Australian debut. He settled last in the eight-horse field, Duneel was
then urged to move up very wide at the 600m and got to second at
the 200m before lifting again to grab the leader nearing the post.
kristy Lee was back in sixth place and made a quick wide run
approaching the home turn. She drew clear in the straight but could
not hold off the winner’s late run. Red Dynamite led and eased
after working early then fought on quite well to hold third. Favourite
king Of Olympia had a torrid run to lead and understandably tired
to finish fifth.
