What’s NEW in HAITI?Monthly update from the Church of the

Holy Family Haiti Committee

• The Haiti Committee is excited to welcome their newest member Anita Montrosso.

• The interior and exterior of the TQ School will get a fresh coat of paint this month. Due to the harsh weather and porous cement blocks, painting is needed every five years. Funding of $2,325.00 is provided by Holy Family for paint, supplies, and labor. Thanks to the many parishioners for their generosity.

• Parents volunteer their time painting and repairing desks to be ready for the September 14 opening of school.

• Kathy Dowdy gave opening remarks in French at the graduation of a group of Haitian teachers including 16 teachers from the TQ School.

If you’re sponsoring a teacher for the 2015-2016 school year, pick up your green envelopes in the family room. Envelopes are needed to make a

payment in the collection basket or front office. If you have any questions, contact Jacki Friedsam at (757) 416-6072.

[email protected]

“CARE FOR OUR EARTH”The creation of more jobs seems to be a major incentive the oil industries offer to convince people to allow and welcome such projects as offshore oil drilling, the Atlantic Coast pipeline, fracking, and removing the uranium ban. Not as much emphasis is placed on the benefits of clean energy sources. According to the Solar Foundation of Virginia Jobs, the development of solar power has been shown to produce more jobs per unit of energy generation than other forms of energy, including coal and natural gas! Since 2012, there has been a 157% increase in solar jobs! Furthermore, improving energy efficiency will help Virginia utility customers save money. Meeting the goals of the Clean Power Plan, Virginians’ household electric bills will be reduced by 8%. When it comes to healthier communities, a recent Harvard study (2014) shows that Virginia ranks among the top 13 states nationwide in public health gains from implementing the Clean Power Plan through potentially avoided premature deaths, hospitalizations and nonfatal heart attacks. Our support of the implementation of the Clean Power Plan in Va. will make a significant difference in our efforts to alleviate climate change.

“It is no longer enough, then, simply to state that we should be concerned for future generations. We need to see that what is at stake is our own dignity. Leaving an inhabitable planet to future generations is, first and foremost, up to us. The issue is one which dramatically affects us, for it has to do with the ultimate meaning of our earthly sojourn.” (Laudato Si pg. 107)
