THE LIVING ROSARYMay is Mary’s month. Join us by celebrating with the Living Rosary in Her honor. What is a Living Rosary? A Living Rosary is a prayer service where each person at the service represents a bead of the Rosary and leads the corresponding prayer while reflecting on the mystery of Jesus’ life. A light is lit as each prayer is begun. Our Living Rosary will be held on Wednesday, May 16, in the Church. It will take a total of at least 60 parishioners to accomplish a complete Living Rosary, so all are invited to participate and be a part of this inspiring and magical prayer service. Watch the bulletin for additional information.

We invite all of the men in our Parish to join our Council and help us make a difference!

MINISTRY WEEKEND – MAY 19/20Stewardship of Time & Talent: Talents come in all shapes and sizes. When God created each of us, we were given a unique set of talents. As stewards, we are called to spend time discovering, cultivating, and sharing our God-given talents.

At Holy Family, we want to help you discover your talents and help you find ministries, both in the parish and beyond, that are a good fit for your God-given talents. Many of our parishioners have worked tirelessly this year. Knowing our strengths helps us choose the most effective use of our time and even helps us make practical decisions about our jobs, relationships, and service.

We invite you to prayerfully make a decision on your stewardship of our Church. Together, may we accomplish the mission Christ has entrusted to us. Stewardship Commitment forms will be available online. Paper copies will be available for those who do not have a computer.

HAITI TEACHER 2 TEACHER (T2T) SPONSORS:You will find green envelopes in a basket on the shelf in the Welcome Office. Please remember to always use a green envelope for your checks. We thank you for your support.

CHURCH OF THE HOLY FAMILY VIRGINIA BEACH, VIRGINIA

MAY – THE MONTH OF MARYThe month of May is the month in which the

faithful has especially dedicated to Our Blessed Lady, and Catholics in every part of the world pray to the Queen of Heaven. “Among all the devotions approved by the Church none has been so favored by so many miracles as the devotion of the Most Holy Rosary.” (Pope Pius IX).

The month of May is a great time to start a family tradition of saying the Rosary every night after dinner or at least one decade of the Rosary. “The Rosary is the weapon for these times.” (Saint Padre Pio)

Opportunities to pray the Rosary with fellow parishioners:The living Rosary on Wednesday, May 16 in the church with

the Knights of Columbus. • Wednesday nights at 6:30 in the Chapel.• The first Saturday of the month at 5:00 p.m.• Every morning after the 9:00 a.m. Mass.• Fridays after the 9:00 a.m. Mass for our military members.

The Rosary is on EWTN at 7:30 and 11:30 a.m. and 3:30 and 9:30 p.m. EWTN has a free app for iPhones and iPads that includes their live programming.

This May, reconnect with a childhood tradition or start a new one with devotion to the Blessed Mother through the most Holy Rosary.

HOLY FAMILY FAIR NEWSOur sign-up tables are out and we’re off to

a GREAT start! What do you think of this year’s flyer? PLEASE remove it from the bulletin, and with the proper permission, place it where you

work or your favorite place of business. We can welcome everyone to the Church of the Holy Family Community Fair.

The POD is here – let’s fill Grandma’s Attic to the rafters. You can start bringing items in now. We can use small appliances, toys, furniture, tools, books, household items, electronics, linens - anything you think someone could use. But please, no clothes, large appliances, paint, chemicals, tires, or mattresses. We have no way of picking things up – so if you have large items, maybe a family member or neighbor has a truck and could deliver them to us? Bring your items to the Church office, and we’ll store them in the POD until the Fair begins.

Don’t forget to pick up your raffle tickets! Many, many just sit and sit... One dollar gives you a chance to win $1500.00, $1,000.00, or $500.00!

Please stop by our sign-up tables and help us where you can. This year’s Fair runs from Thursday, May 31, to Sunday, June 3. Any questions or suggestions? Email TonyMushik@aol,com Thank you!

FOOD PANTRY GARDENERS:We are looking for people to help supply fresh vegetables from their garden to the Holy Family Food Pantry. Holy Family distributes groceries to those in need the last Saturday of the month. Typically, approximately 100+ people show up for the distribution. We are trying to add more fruits and vegetables to the Food Pantry distribution. If you are interested in growing vegetables for the Food Pantry Distribution, or have questions, please contact Brian Maddox at [email protected], or call 286-0540. Thank You!

FROM THE ADVOCATES CORNER: May is Mental Health Month. Did you know 1 in 5 adults

experience some kind of mental health disorder? A mental health disorder can affect people of any race, religion, or socioeconomic status and is not the result of personal weakness, lack of character, or poor upbringing. Examples of conditions that fall under mental health issues are anxiety disorders, depression, bipolar disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, ADHD, eating disorders, and Alzheimers. Most of us know someone with one of these disorders or maybe you are experiencing one of these yourself. Please seek help if any of these conditions are affecting your daily life. NAMI Virginia Beach is a local organization that helps anyone who might be experiencing any of these issues. Their phone number is 757-499-2041. They have classes and support groups and many other supports that one may need. Do not hesitate to contact them.

NAMI and Faith Inclusion Network together will be sponsoring a community conversation called “All Play and No Work.” Sometimes employment is the number one issue and challenge for anyone with any kind of disability. This event will explore opportunities available. It will take place on Friday, May 18, from 9:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Enoch Baptist Church, 5641 Herbert Moore Road in Virginia Beach. This is a free event but you need to register at https://all-play-no-work.eventbrite.com. If you need communication accommodation for this event, please contact [email protected].

If you need accommodations to attend Mass or other events at Holy Family, please contact Susie Stefonowich at [email protected] or 757-342-8540.

LOW-GLUTEN COMMUNION HOSTS: For those who require special dietary restrictions, we now have low-gluten communion hosts (approved by the USCCB). Please contact Alfie in the Parish Office for further instructions on how to receive low-gluten hosts at communion each weekend.

“CREATION CARE CORNER”During this Easter Season, it is appropriate to reflect on the

following passage from Pope Francis’ encyclical, “Laudato Si”, paragraph 77: “Creation is of the order of love. God’s love is the fundamental moving force in all created things.”

“For God loves all things that exists, and detests none of the things that He has made; for He would not have made anything if He hated it.” (Wisdom 11:24)

Every creature is thus the object of the Father’s tenderness, who gives it its place in the world. Even the fleeting life of the least of beings is the object of His love, and in its few seconds of existence, God enfolds it with His affection.

Saint Basil the Great described the Creator as “goodness without measure,” while Dante Alighieri spoke of “the love that moves the sun and the stars.”

Let’s look around to notice God’s footprint in all creatures and come alive to God’s loving presence.

“Each organism, as a creature of God, is good and admirable in itself. We are called to recognize that all living beings have a value of their own in God’s eyes.”

~ Pope Francis

Emmet Cahill Concert Thank you doesn’t even come close to the deep well of gratitude due TEAM EMMET + helpers stepping in as needed for the many tasks making the Emmet Cahill Concert a fabulous success at Holy Family. Banding together in early March, this generous and wise core of parishioners brainstormed hosting 400 concert-goers from as far away as Texas: Mike O’Brien (Ticketing planning & selling, raffle, and general $ mind extraordinaire) Jacki Friedsam (Professional Sandler Center usher extraordinaire & promotion queen; not enough space to list all she did along with ideas developed.) Karen Dixon (Tickets, publicity, Parish Office, cheerleader, and poster distributor far and wide) Beth Jala (Media promotions and copy editor – obviously, she didn’t see this wordy one!) Jim & Louise Mulligan (Irish connection and reality check in our initial excitement – “Sell how many?”)

Fr. Eric, who kept us on track with support and encouragement, finishing off by graciously greeting and thanking Emmet & Seamus after the concert. They were impressed by that gesture.

Joining later for the myriad tasks were Grand Knight Chuck Kline informing all councils and encouraging Knights to assist, Kathleen Lapke with Irish organization connections, Lou & Mary Romano with crowd control and various tasks at the concert (cutting down the outdoor banner for the raffle), the outdoor greeters, ushers and worship space cleaner-uppers & movers Mike Manlove, Rick Paradiso, Charlie Clarkson, Greg Brown, Joe Stefonowich,

David & Laura Sample, Jean Pulizzi, and Bishop Sullivan Junior Sean Davitt. Let us not forget the Leprechauns Cheryl Riordan, Lon, & Judy Scofield who assisted at the pre-concert Meet & Greet, shepherding 60 from the Atrium to the “secret leprechaun” concert entrance! At the same time, Ann Staskin (also a flutist at masses) and dancers from Walker Academy of Irish Dance were entertaining the folk in the Commons awaiting seating. Kathy Staskin and others assisted with the dance floor. Great thanks is due all who sold tickets at the Parish Office with great enthusiasm for Emmet Cahill! Gratefulness goes to the Servant Leadership Team contributing their skills: Alfie for various tasks, setup, and support, Carla for bulletin publicity, Jeff for website publicity and Meet & Greet sound setup, Glenn for facilities management issues and with Bob Lincoln, Atrium setup for 60 guests. With these marvelous contributions of time and talent, the concert experience was stellar, and then Emmet sang! It was a joy to see everyone happily carrying out all the tasks to make it a huge success, earning the parish $3500 along with terrific publicity for our welcoming, organized, and hospitable parish. From Head Leprechaun Sylvia Chapa of the Emmet Cahill Concert Project to all who made it happen, to all who purchased tickets & raffles, a huge thank you in Irish Gaelic ~
