The Object of RotaryThe Object of Rotary is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster:

•FIRST. The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service; •SECOND. High ethical standards in business and professions, the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations, and the dignifying of each Rotarian's occupation as an opportunity to serve society; •THIRD. The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian's personal, business, and community life; •FOURTH. The advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional persons united in the ideal of service.


Avenues of ServiceBased on the Object of Rotary, the “Avenues of Service” are Rotary’s philosophical cornerstone and the foundation on which club activity is based: •Club Service focuses on strengthening fellowship and ensuring the effective functioning of the club. •Vocational Service encourages Rotarians to serve others through their vocations and to practice high ethical standards. •Community Service covers the projects and activities the club undertakes to improve life in its community. •International Service encompasses actions taken to expand Rotary’s humanitarian reach around the globe and to promote world understanding and peace. •New Generations Service recognizes the positive change implemented by youth and young adults through leadership development activities, service projects, and exchange programs.


4 Way Test

Of the things we think, say or do 1. Is it the TRUTH? 2. Is it FAIR to all concerned? 3. Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS? 4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?

Herbert J. Taylor, president, Rotary Club of Chicago, 1939-40 and Rotary International 1954-55. He lived from 1893 to 1978. During a business crisis in 1932, he wrote the "Four Way Test," shown below. It was adopted as part of Rotary International in January of 1943

Rotary club members are volunteers who work locally, regionally, and internationally to combat hunger, improve health and sanitation, provide education and job training, promote peace, and eradicate polio.

• Chartered with 25 Non-Rotarians• Maintained about 23 members for 4 years• 2009 – focused on membership increase• 2010 – 50 members• 2011 – 60 members• 2012 – 66 members of the club• 2013 – Goal of 70

The Rotary Foundation

• Started in 1925 by Arch Klump • First project horse for a doctor in Chicago• Two Funds– Annual Fund


Annual Fund

• Used to fund projects around the world• All money sits in Foundation for 3 years• Money is disbursed– 50% to World Fund (Grant Money)– 50% to the District (5790)

• EREY (Every Rotarian Every Year) Funds


Annual Fund Example

• $100 to the Annual Fund through EREY• Held for three (3) years and draws interest– Interest pays expenses of RI operations

• End of three (3) years– $50 to World Fund – $50 to District 5790

Permanent Fund

• The permanent fund is just that a permanent fund that allows Rotary International to sustain operations in times of economic down turn– Bequest Society• Pledging in your will that you have contributed at least

$10,000 to the Rotary Foundation from your estate.– Benefactor • Making a minimum contribution of $1,000 to the

Permanent Fund of the Foundation




• Matching Grants


Matching Grants

• The Rotary Foundation provides money through the Annual Fund vis-à-vis EREY for Matching Grants– Example Grant:

• Any Town (USA) = $5,000• Leon de Rotario (Mexico) = $5,000

$10,000• Rotary Foundation (World Fund) = $10,000

Total Grant Money for a Project = $20,000

District Simplified Grant

• The Rotary Foundation provides money through the Annual Fund vis-à-vis EREY back to the District (5790) which can be used by Rotary Clubs for local projects– Example DSG:• Any Town (USA) = $2,000• District 5790 (District Designated Funds) = $1,500

Total Grant Money for a Local Project = $3,500



• Recognition Levels– Paul Harris Fellow• $1,000 contribution to Rotary Foundation• Continued each $1,000 contribution until major donor

Community Service I

Community Service covers the projects and activities the club undertakes to improve life in its community. •Flag Program – major fundraiser for the club• Sunrise Creative Playground – first built in 1987 and rebuilt in 2007• Highland Games – held at UTA and a fundraiser for the Club• Golf Tournament – in its 4th year• Crystal Canyon Project – creating a walking trail with Arlington P&R

Vocational Service encourages Rotarians to serve others through their vocations and to practice high ethical standards. •Scholarships

– Providing 4-5 seniors a year with a $1,500 scholarship• Mentoring

– Providing speakers to local schools and community organizations by the members

• Four Way Speech Contest – Holding a speech contest for high school juniors and seniors

•R.I.T.E. – Rotary Intercountry Teacher Exchange

New Generations

New Generations Service recognizes the positive change implemented by youth and young adults through leadership development activities, service projects, and exchange programs. •Thornton Bike Attendance Program

– Providing 2 bikes each six weeks to two students who have perfect attendance

• Dictionaries – Providing dictionaries to 3rd grade classes at Thornton Elementary and Foster

Elementary• Teacher of the Year

– Recognizing one teacher a year from Thornton Elementary• R.Y.L.A.

– Rotary Youth Leadership Award• Rotaract

– Club for college students sponsored by the Club at TCC SE Campus

International Service• International Service encompasses actions taken to expand Rotary’s

humanitarian reach around the globe and to promote world understanding and peace. – Wheelchairs to Leon, Guanajuato, Mexico – 2006,

2007, 2008, 2009 & 2011– Two ambulances to the Red Cross in Mexico – 2009– Blood bank in India– Water filters in Honduras 2008, 2009– India National Immunization Day (NID) 2004, 2009,

2011– Nigeria National Immunization Day (NID) 2010– Youth Exchange – Italy 2009, Chile and Brazil 2010
