    Day 1

    Overview of anxiety in children and young people

    Holistic assessment and formulation

    Day 2

    Interventions for anxiety in children and young people Including psycho-education, somatic management skills, cognitive restructuring, exposure, relapse prevention and group programs

  • Learning objectives: Provide an overview of anxiety in children and young people,

    Describe a structured and comprehensive holistic approach to assessment of anxiety in children and young people

    provide a developmental perspective on normal and abnormal anxiety in children and young people

    Describe exposure-based CBT for anxiety in children and young people, including individualised Modular CBT. The role of active ignoring, time out, cognitive restructuring, rewards, social skills training and troubleshooting will be explored

    Demonstrate a number of somatic management techniques, including anchoring.

    Provide examples of appropriate psycho-education for young people, parents/carers and teachers

    Outline relapse prevention and group programs

    Demonstrate the use of a range of clinical tools in managing anxiety in children and young people.

    Provide a brief presentation and notes about anxiety, which participants could use to cascade their learning to non-clinical staff, including teachers

    Provide opportunities to enhance local interagency collaboration

    Learning methods: A range of learning activities are used including case discussions, demonstrations of the clinical techniques, skills practice activities, and didactic presentations.

    Pre-and post-course learning activities: In order to free up face-to-face workshop time for skill development much of the knowledge and information component of the course is provided in CD format (including extensive readings, clinical tools, psychoeducation material and expert interviews). The CD will be forwarded to participants several weeks before the course (please ensure your correct postal address is included on your application form). Pre-course readings address assumed knowledge and prepare participants for workshop activities.

    Post-course learning materials can be utilised for individual self-paced learning or for discussion within staff teams or interagency meetings.

    About the Trainers:

    Rob McAlpine MA, Dip Ed, Phd, MAPS is a clinical psychologist and has extensive experience working with adolescents. Robs PhD is on the relationship between stress, depression and anxiety how these are mediated by interpersonal skills. Rob worked for many years as a counsellor in public schools. Anthony Hillin BSW, M Adol MH has over 25 yrs experience working on adolescent issues, as a clinician, trainer and manager of a child and adolescent mental health service. His training and consulting has been commissioned by over 100 agencies in the UK, USA and India. Anthonys work spans a range of issues including grief and loss, sexuality, supervision and team building. For 14 years Rob and Anthony have developed and delivered Australias most comprehensive interagency training program in adolescent mental health, initially for the NSW School-Link Training Program and currently for the Queensland Ed-LinQ initiative. Anthony & Rob have jointly delivered a suite of five courses in adolescent depression, anxiety and related disorders to over 3,000 adolescent mental health clinicians, school and TAFE psychologists. Rob and Anthony are certified trainers in Interpersonal Psychotherapy (IPT) and provide teaching and consulting in the adolescent version of IPT in the USA and in Australia.

    Participants will need to make arrangements with their managers for the pre-course study requirements. We would suggest a minimum of 4 hours for pre-course learning.
