It started like it always starts, an accident. None of this was supposed to happen. Or maybe it was supposed to happen, precisely.

I had been mostly unable to remember any of my dreams, yet I found myself with fragments of memories, parts of what was to become a complex puzzle. I was attracted to those fragments. They left enough room for interpreta-tions.

I would increasingly meet people who would tell me they had met me before, or mentioned events I had no memo-ries of attending, and I started to accept that simple fact:

we shouldn’t worry too much about it.

Instead, we should play with reality, like a prism reveals different colors depending on its angle and the light it receives.

We were there but we weren’t, like holograms.

When I think of that decade I see a blinking screensaver shining on a

Corporate responsibility.

Another party and another PlayStation, kids playing in silence. A rolling katamari, aggregating cell-shaded twin towers, jumbo planes, and the an-nihilator governor of a bankrupted west state, all a mass of meta-data and trackbacks. At some point the revelation the deceased reality TV celebrity never had a doctor and was buying drugs on the internet. More trouble at

over songs no one knew the words to anymore. That decade we would end up adding strangers on social networking sites to feel safe, our precious iPhones in the back pocket of our designer jeans, a talisman against all evil. We would pretend we cared about Iran when all that mattered was the possibility of cheap sex on a week night, the potential of a story to tell the colleagues the next day, the augmented details shared before the next conference call.

still connect on the next stop, another city somewhere, what was the name again? And the taxi driver wouldn’t speak English and it wouldn’t matter, the words always the same,”to the Hilton”.

That decade we were tired because nothing was happening and we would have no expectations, the thrills of drugs and semi celebrity not enough to keep us excited. We’d go shopping, aware of the irony of it all, exchang-ing shy smiles at the register while keeping our Wayfarers on.

That decade we were devouring ourselves like zombies trapped in a shop-ping mall.

That decade we would make plans and cancel them right away and we -

lessly cruising the streets. We would dream of swimming pools and Ara-bic rap music would be blasting somewhere up on the hills, and we would feel very much alive. We would ride to the beach and dive in the sea as the sun rose up, and someone would mention a barbecue by the river the next day, and I would think of you and how much you would have enjoyed that moment, in that decade.

And there would be more emails in our inbox, like an endless game of Tetris, the promises of a slightly tolerable tomorrow, a new track in the newsfeed, a free giftbag at a store opening.
