Anton Grdina Investment School

To Families & Caregivers of Anton Grdina Student-Scholars:

Th ank you for your ongoing support of your student-scholars and of the educators who anchor each of your Investment School communities. I am grateful for the input you provided to CMSD during the recent Community Circle-Back Conversations and am glad to share with you the third-quarter Investment School progress reports for school year 2013-14.

We are seeing positive trends in many of the “leading indicators” of school improvement. Most Investment Schools have demonstrated a signifi cant reduction in suspensions, a decrease in serious disciplinary incidents, and increased family and community participation at school events. In addition, based on benchmark assessment data from our high schools, two out of three Investment high schools showed growth in their predicted Performance Index as compared to the fall baseline or as compared to last year’s Performance Index score.

Staff attendance at most of the Investment Schools is also at or above the district average. Th is data is particularly encouraging, because academic achievement can rise in every classroom when both student-scholars and educators work together to accelerate learning. However, I remain concerned that student attendance is declining in many Investment and other CMSD schools. With spring weather fi nally approaching, we need all our families’ help to ensure every student-scholar comes to school every day. We still have enough days remaining this school year to make signifi cant increases in academic achievement.

In the coming months, there will be ongoing opportunities for families and community members to provide feedback on our goals and progress. Please share your ideas and concerns with your School-Parent Organization (SPO), Investment School principal, or Trent Mosley, the Executive Director who supports the Investment Schools {contact info below}. We also appreciate that many of you are willing to share your feedback through telephone and online surveys. We truly value all your responses.

Your active participation in your child’s education is an important part of our eff ort to turn around Investment Schools and to fulfi ll the promise of e Cleveland Plan that every child will attend a successful school. When report cards are issued on March 31, talk and refl ect with your child and help him or her to set goals for the rest of the year. Read with your children. Ask teachers how you can support what student-scholars are learning in the classroom. It is our privilege as educators to work in partnership with families to ensure every student-scholar succeeds.

Th e Investment School progress reports will continue to provide a detailed look at your child’s school performance so that, together, we can reinforce strategies that are working and provide additional supports where needed to accelerate school improvement in all the Investment Schools. Th ank you.

Sincerely,

Eric Gordon Chief Executive Offi cer

Teachers report strong support from administrationCMSD is developing a Conditions for Teaching Survey to evaluate how supported teachers feel at school. We will roll out the survey this spring. In the meantime, academic superintendents are informally surveying teachers to ensure they feel supported, and the CTU is also regularly communicating teacher sentiment at schools.

Part II: Attendance and Culture

Average daily staff attendance Due to data inconsistencies, we are not reporting a trend for staff attendance. We will continue to refi ne, monitor and report on this metric.

Number of family and community engagement eventsAll data on this page as reported to the Family and Community Engagement Offi ce, so may not include additional off site or community events.

Participation at family and community engagement eventsWe hope to move to a method of reporting family and community engagement data that will allow for comparison across schools, but this is challenging because some parents attend events for multiple siblings, while another student might have a dad and an aunt attend an event. Keep in mind that HB 525, The Cleveland Plan, requires that all families attend a family conference by December 15 of each school year.
