h er posi tion to drop her depth charges. 0 1w long blast of th(• whist le will be a warning that she has ch-opped a depth charge.

29. If a periscope h as been sigh ted, the fast destroyer _t<_i n•ach the spot should drop her depth ch arges ahead of the pos1t10n thr submarine is judged to have reached. If th e t rack of a t~rp~do can be seen, she should drop her dep th ch arges near tho begrnnmg of the track. Other destroyers as they reach the pos i tio11 should add to the barrage in what appears to be the most favorable direC'Lio11 (vide section 6) .

30. If the periscope of a sub marine is sighted when she is iu a position to attack a ship or convoy, and wi thin a reasoirnhlr distance of a patrol craft, i t is suggested that a depth charge should be dr opped at once. A submarine under such conditions cfl II onl: · afford to show her periscope for Vt'.ry shor t periods, a nd may not have observed the destroyer. In any case an explosion Jl fl tll' lwr

is very apt to rattle her and 1rnt h er off her shot, or even mn kc> hl'r keep her periscope down until her opportimity has passed.

If this plan is adopted some prearranged signal should be used to indicate to other escorts that the dep th clrnrge was not d ropped on the supposed position of a submarine.

31. Strangers approaching the convoy will be warned b)- n<•a resl destroyers to keep clear of tho formatiou . If of :t suspicious eharacter , report circumstances to senior officer.
