Antimalarial Artemisinin
Michelle AtkinsJavier Ramirez
What is Malaria?
A disease of the blood caused by the Plasmodium parasite.
100+ species of malaria parasite exists.
The most common is Plasmodium falciparum.
214M cases worldwide in 2015.
Anti-Malarial Artemisinin Works faster against Uncomplicated
Malaria. Artemisinin is extracted from the
plant Artemisia Annua: Used in Chinese Traditional
Medicine.
The Problem
Artemisinin Molecule
A. Annua plant
Objectives
Find a stable source of affordable artemisinin.
Produce high yield biological strains of arteminisinic acid.
Hypothesis
“The discovery of a plant dehydrogenase and a second cytochrome will provide an efficient
biosynthetic route to artemisinic acid”.
The Amyris Approach
2. Automated DNA Assembly
1. Design Biosynthetic Pathway
Automated DNA Assembly (Cont.)
Next Generation Sequencing
DNA Regions are assembled in vivo in yeast
