ANTI – CORRUPTION
International Anti-Corruption Day
The Inter-Agency Task Team (IATT) on anti-corruption in
collaboration with UNDP and UNODC organized a 2 day
programme to mark the International Anti- Corruption day in
Nigeria. The 2 day programme comprised of an Anti-Corruption
rally on the 8th and a Grand Finale event on 9 December.
Representatives of the IATT (which comprises of 20 anti-
corruption agencies in Nigeria), Federal Ministries, the Nigeria
Labour Congress (NLC), various Civil Society Organizations,
Students, the diplomatic community, UNDP and UNODC
participated in both events. The theme for the 2010 Anti-
Corruption Day in Nigeria was “Good Strategy 4 Zero Corruption”. It focused on creating greater public awareness of and
engagement in the development of a National Corruption Strategy to Combat Corruption that is currently being prepared
under the lead of the IATT. The Grand Finale event was presided over by the Chairman of the IATT, Prof. H.A. Asobie who
emphasized that the time had come for everybody to think outside the box as corruption in Nigeria had multiplied, despite all
efforts by Government and non-governmental stakeholders to combat corruption. In his key note address, the Hon. Attorney
General of the Federation, Mr. Bello Adoke, assured Nigerians that the Government of President Dr. Goodluck Jonathan was
strongly committed to the fight against corruption and will make the implementation of the anti-corruption strategy its
priority. UNODC‘s Country Representative, Ms. Dagmar Thomas emphasized that “the UN system will continue to support
Nigeria and the IATT in the implementation of the strategy and in the development of a robust system of monitoring and
evaluation, focusing in particular on providing civil society and the private sector with a voice, in the process of helping
Government to achieve the objectives as spelt out in the Strategy.
