Originally from Massachusetts, illustrator and graphic designer TracyButler found herself living in a century-old house in St. Louis. Its historyfascinated her, and as she delved intothe stories that the old house hadto tell, the world of Lackadaisy Cats

began to grow in her imagination.Since 2006, she has been telling - anddrawing - riveting tales of felines livingand working (not always honestly) inthe USA in the era of Prohibition. Hercharacters are masterfully developed:strong yet vulnerable, always endearingbut sometimes downright scary. Wehope that she will feel very much at

home as Anthrocon itself takes a stepback in time to celebrate “The RoaringTwenty.”

The Anthrocon Art Show is an exhibit oforiginal artworks of a science ction, fantasyand/or “fannish” nature, especially relating toanthropomorphic animals. Here you will ndfor sale both at (e.g. sketches and paintings)and 3-dimensional (e.g. sculpture and costumes)artwork created by professional and amateur

    artists.To be a “bidder” (i.e. a prospective buyer of

original artwork) you must:1. Be a registered member of Anthrocon, as

evidenced by your convention badge;2. Obtain a bidder number at the Art

Show table by lling out and signing a bidderinformation sheet, acknowledging that youagree to abide by these bidding rules.

If you wish to place “proxy” bids on behalf ofsomeone not in attendance, please see the Art

Show Director.Signicant changes from previous versions of

these rules are indicated in bold type. Areas of the Art Show

There are two distinct areas of the Art Show.1. In the General Gallery, you will see original

artwork depicting subjects suitable for all ages toview. This will be open for silent (written) biddingduring the day and early evening Friday andSaturday, and Sunday morning. If a piece receivesenough written bids by noon Sunday, it will be sent

to the general voice auction Sunday afternoon.2. The Mature Gallery is set aside for the

display of original artwork depicting maturesubject matter. This will be open during thesame hours as the rest of the Art Show Fridayand Saturday, and monitored to keep minorsout. Pieces in this area which receive enoughwritten bids by Saturday evening will be sent toa separate voice auction later that evening.Bidding

Each piece of artwork is tagged with a Bid

Sheet which provides information about thatpiece, including its title, the medium, the nameof the artist, and the minimum bid at which theartist is willing to sell the piece. If an artist doesnot wish to sell a given piece, it is listed as “nfs”(Not For Sale).

On the Bid Sheet are several lines where youmay write down your name, bidder number, and the amount you wish to bid for that item. The amount of the bid must be in whole dollars,at least as much as the minimum bid specied

by the artist, and larger than any precedingbid on the bid sheet. Write legibly on the nextnumbered bid line. Do not cross out any previouslywritten bids, including your own. If you make amistake in bidding, please inform an Art Showcrew member so we may x the bid sheet sothere are the correct number of empty bid lines.

You may not interfere with or intimidatesomeone who wants to outbid you. Allow themto place their bid, and then outbid them on thenext bid line. If someone tries to keep you from

placing a bid, seek assistance from an Art Show

crew member. Anyone caught interfering withbidding will be asked to leave the Art Show, andtheir bidding privileges revoked.

Artists (or their associates) may not place bidson their own artwork with the intent of biddingup the price unfairly, or to keep other biddersfrom purchasing a piece in order to retain it to sell

elsewhere under more favorable circumstances. However, they are allowed to place “proxy” bids onbehalf of a customer not in attendance.

Written bidding for General Gallery artworkcloses at noon Sunday. The Art Show will becleared of all bidders at that time, as detailedbelow. Pieces with enough written bids (asshown on the bid sheet) will be placed in thevoice auction, which begins Sunday at 2 pm;all other art will be sold to the person with thehighest written bid, if any. At the voice auction,

the art is open to further bids by other people. Therefore, you should attend the voice auctionto defend your bids on pieces you still wantto buy. If there are no voice bids, the art willbe sold to the person with the highest writtenbid. Although there are “runners” showing offthe auction pieces, this is for identication, notadmiration. Please take the time to examinethe artwork closely while the show is open forwritten bidding!

For pieces in the Mature Gallery, the

procedure is similar, although the times aredifferent. Written bidding ends Saturday at 6pm. Artwork with enough written bids will beplaced in a separate voice auction for matureartwork which begins at 11 pm Saturday, andruns similarly to the General Gallery voiceauction, as noted above.

All artwork sold by written bid or in eithervoice auction will available for pickup Sundayduring sales hours, 2 to 5 pm. Artists have theoption of setting a “Price After Closing.” If a

piece has received no written bids by closingtime, it may be available at the indicated priceSunday afternoon if the artist still wishes to sellit. If this is the case, the blank bid line #1 will becircled in red. Fill in your name, bidder number, and the “Price After Closing” when collecting your artwork.

Be careful. When placing a written bid onitems, assume that you will be the winningbidder on all of them. In this way, you will avoidhaving to pay for more art than you can afford to

buy. If you have reached your limit for Art Showpurchases, wait until you have lost an item to ahigher bidder before bidding on another item.(Keep in mind that we must collect 7% sales taxon purchases, so allow for this in your guring.)We provide handy Bidding Record forms so youcan keep track of what you’ve bid on and whereit’s located to make it easy for you to nd again.

Also, return to the Art Show before closing (6pm Saturday for mature artwork; noon Sundayfor everything else) to check the bid sheets to

see what items, if any, you have won by written

  • 8/15/2019 Anthrocon 2016 Convention and Dining Guide

    32/39

bid and which items will be going to the voiceauction. After closing, because the crew isbusy getting ready for the auction, we cannotaccommodate anyone who wants to check theirbids at that time.

Be serious. Do not make a bid unless youmean it. A bid is a binding obligation to buy thatart at that price.

If you are the winning bidder, you purchaseonly the physical possession of the artwork; theartist retains the copyright. If you wish to makecopies of a piece you purchase for any purpose, you must negotiate for the right to do so withthe artist, whose name and contact informationare on the back of each piece or can be obtainedfrom the Art Show Director. (Please Note: Artistsare provided with the names and addresses ofthose who have purchased their artwork.)Defending Your Bids

When the written bidding closes, crewmembers will form a “moving wall” startingat the back of a section and moving forward, closing bidding by artist (not by piece, not bypanel, not by bay). The closeout path is shown onthe Art Show map handout and poster. Closeoutis done per artist in a bay: if there are threeartists in a bay, there will be three closeouts inthe bay; if one artist takes up the entire bay,the entire bay closes at once; and if an artistoccupies more than one bay, each of their bayscloses separately.

We move quickly, so when the “wall” gets toan artist you want to bid on, do your biddingbefore the auctioneer declares the artist “closed.”We will not close an artist while bidding isgoing on, but if there is no bidding, it will closequickly, so don’t be timid—if you want to bid, bid!  We can’t wait for someone to make up theirmind at the last second. We want you to get yourchance to bid, but do it quickly!

You will be allowed to defend your bids, but you may not block anyone else from bidding on

any piece—the auctioneer and Art Show crewwill see that it doesn’t happen. If you are notactively guarding your bids, we ask that youclear the aisles at least 10 minutes before theshow closes. There are a lot of people in thearea, and we need to move them out as quicklyas possible when closeout begins. If you are justhaving a conversation with someone, please takeit outside the Art Show.

All this allows you to defend bids in more thanone section. The Art Show crew follows close

behind the “wall,” marking nal bids to ensurethat if you’re the last bid, you are the last bid.Once the “wall” passes a point, no one except ArtShow crew are allowed beyond it.Sales

Art Show Sales will take place Sunday from2 to 5 pm. (If you have an afternoon ride, ight, train or bus to catch, please ask in advance about early sales pickup.) At this time youmust personally pick up and pay for all itemsof art you have won by written bid or voice

auction. You must show your con badge foridentication, and additional identication maybe requested.

If you have items in the Mature Gallery, thesepieces must be paid for and wrapped before youcan take them out of the Mature Gallery.

Collect your art from the panels and tables. Donot remove the bid sheets from the artwork! Therewill be work tables set up where you then llout a sales slip, writing in the artist name, piecetitle, and high bid amount for each piece, as wellas your real name and bidder number. (Use morethan one slip if necessary.)

The genre of anthropomorphics is aeld that deals heavily in the thematicappreciation of animals crossed to varyingdegrees with humans resulting in fantastic, intelligent characters and marvelous newimaginary species. However, we shouldnever overlook the real-life counterparts tothis mix and assist our animal friends in anyway we can to ensure a better future for allof us.

This year, Anthrocon has chosento support The Pittsburgh Zoo & PPGAquarium. The Pittsburgh Zoo strives tofoster positive, lifelong connections betweenanimals and people through exhibits, educational programs, and their manyconservation projects. Their goal is to make

certain the Earth remains a suitable homefor all life by fostering discovery of theinterconnectedness of the natural world. From their representatives:

With 8,000 animals representing everycontinent on the planet, the Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium unequivocally boasts some of thewildest experiences in the Steel City. As one ofonly six public zoo/aquarium combinations inthe country, the park offers guests rst-hand

encounters with a robust plethora of species, fromthe grandeur of majestic African elephants to the playful antics of gentoo penguins.

Nestled across 77 acres of rolling terrain in Pittsburgh’s Highland Park neighborhood, theZoo features several thematic neighborhoods. As visitors make their way through the windingand immersive terrain, they traverse areasthat represent different geographic regionsand categories of species. Beginning in the

Asian Forest, visitors are brought nose-to-snout

with exotic mammals such as snow leopards, Amur tigers, Amur leopards, and red pandas.Continuing further into the African Savanna, African lions, black rhinos, springbok, dama gazelles, African elephants, Masai giraffes, zebras, and cheetahs represent the awe-inspiring species that inhabit the heart of Africa. Indoor facilities, including underwater adventures inthe PPG Aquarium, high-ying primate fun inthe Tropical Forest Complex, and reptile-centricthrills in Worlds of Discovery, offer countlessopportunities for learning about, living among, and loving creatures of all shapes and sizes fromaround the globe.

For outdoor adventurers, Water’s Edge gives

guests a taste of a small Alaskan shing village. The quaint storefronts and unique viewingopportunities—including two underwaterviewing tunnels that provide 270-degree viewsof swimming animals—highlight the necessityof saving northern species of concern, includingmarine mammals such as polar bears and seaotters.
