Coaltrans Conferences, together with Vinacoal– Vietnam National Coal Corporation – areorganising and hosting the world’s first jointAnthracite and PCI conference.

Both of these key product sectors have recently seen a stellar rise indemand. This spectacular growth is being driven by buyer’s interestsin the economic advantages that substitution for other fuel sourcesprovides. International mining companies are also responding toincreased demand by making strident efforts to develop newproduction sources of both Anthracite and PCI.

AnthraciteAnthracite, the almost-forgotten highest-rank coal, has seen arenaissance in the past few years. Its low volatile matter and highcarbon content is now increasingly used in the steel, cement, powerand chemical industries, as well as specialist metallurgical andindustrial processes. Likewise buyers are keenly seeking Semi-Anthracite, the low volatile bituminous coal.

PCIProduction volumes of Pulverised Coal Injection (PCI) continue toshow year on year growth. PCI has big cost advantages over the useof coke in blast furnaces, and demand is forecast to grow from 38MT(2002) to 48MT in 2010, according to Hill & Associates. Of this total, about 90% is seaborne transported, while overall export volumes areexpected to increase from 33MT to 43MT over that period.

The conference agenda covers major developments within theproducing countries, as well as key consuming industries. Theimportant uses of both Anthracite and PCI as substitutes formetallurgical coke as a reductant and for combustion will behighlighted throughout the comprehensive conference programme.

The Coaltrans World Anthracite & PCI Conference will befollowed by a technical Field Trip to Quang Ninh, which willgive delegates the opportunity to visit key miningoperations. Delegates will see at first hand the remarkableongoing expansion of the Vietnamese coal industry, andenjoy the unforgettable and unique sights of Ha Long Bay.

Delegates will travel from Hanoi to Ha Long Bay in theafternoon of Friday September 17. On Saturday September18, upon completion of the Field Trip, delegates will betransferred back to Hanoi for connection to onwardinternational flights.

Operations to bevisited:

Coc Sau Coal MineCoc Sau Coal Mine hasbeen in production since1960, and expansion iscurrently being considered:from 1-1.2MT/year to 1.5-1.7MT/year, with miningdepth finishes of -150m to210m. Reserves havebeen recently estimated at28MT, allowing miningproduction to continue for the next 14 years. Mining operationsare managed by Coc Sau Coal Company. It plans to produce2.4MT in 2004, and is increasing efficiency by employingadvanced mining technologies, while expanding equipment capacity, reducingcosts, and gradually applying high-capacity equipment to mining operations.

Cua Ong Coal Preparation Plant #2Cua Ong Coal Preparation Plant #2was built in the 1970s, and hasincreased its capacity and operationsby way of a series of investments. In1989 the plant was upgraded usingAustralian equipment, consisting ofnon-sizing jigs (grain size 0/100mm)and dense medium cyclones to

produce fine coal and lump coal 6/15mm, with a capacity of 3.2MT/year. InJuly 2003, the #3 jigging systems were upgraded through cooperation withJapan Coal Energy Center, which increased the capacity of this jig from 220T/h to 290 T/h. The quality of production continues is of a high standard, andthe recovery rate of clean coal has been increased. The 2004 targets for theplant are to increase coal input to 5.5 MT/year, as well as increase the rate ofclean coal recovery to 65-67%, There are plans to install a new dense mediumcyclone, which will give a wider range of products such as fine coal #1, lumpcoal 6/15, 15/35 and 35/55mm.

Cam Pha PortCam Pha Port is the main sea transport artery forVinacoal’s growing exports, and boasts a 40kmchannel with average depth of 9m. The shiploadingsystem has a capacity of 1600 tons/hour, with aloading capacity of 8MT of coal per year, and can

berth vessels of 65,000DWT. Improvements are being added by way ofextending the wharf by 250m downstream, and dredging the draft to -10.5m.The trans-shipment point anchorage will therefore have a coal-handlingsystem of 15,000 tons/hour, with an increased annual coal throughput of12MT/year. In 2002, Cam Pha Port was awarded the Quality ManagementSystem ISO 9001-2000, and was certified by QUACERT and DNV.

Ha Long BayThe Field Trip will incorporate a boatexcursion, which will give delegates theopportunity to see the magnificent WorldHeritage site that is Ha Long Bay.

The Bay is known for its magnificent natural beautyand is made up of 1,600 of stone islands covering1,500 sq km, which join to create a labyrinth ofcaves, grottoes and rifts. The line of islandsstretches for 50km, and boast heights of up to

400m, creating a natural port for both humans and wildlife. Legend has it thatHa Long is the home of Dragon Mother, who created pearls whichtransformed into islands as a wall for townspeople to defend their homes.Halong is also an area with abundant cultural relics. A wide variety of speciesis exhibited in its fossilised rock, such as the ‘Old Man of the Sea’ island, andmother-of-pearl can be found along the island shores.
