INTRODUCTION

Poetry commonly appears as a sequence of lines arranged in stanzas rather than a sequence of sentences within paragraphs. It is ultimately characterized more by how it communicates than by what it communicates.

poetry relies on the sound of the spoken language poetry relies on figurative language.

Poetry can tell a story, describe an object or situation, narrate an event, or simply express feelings. Whatever the substance of the remarks and the ultimate message, poetry is characterized by linguistic elements that go beyond standard sentence structure.

PIT-A-PAT-A-PARROT

Pit-a-pat-a-parrot

On her parrot back

Pit a little pat a little

don’t forget to scratch a little

don’t forget to chat

A little

She will learn the knack a little

If you pit-a-pat-a-parrot

If you chit-a-chat-a-parrot

While you scritch and scratch a parrot

She will chit and chat right back.

Here are the legs that walk along,

Here is the beak that sings a song.

Here are the wings that flap and spread

And here is the bird

Above my head.
