ANTA (Latin, possibly from ante, 'before' or 'in front of')1. An architectural term describing the posts or pillars on either side of a doorway or entrance. The bases and capitals of these antas were not required to conform to the style, or order, of the column.2. A textiles and ceramics company situated on the Moray Firth of Scotland's rugged northeast coast. Founded by Annie & Lachlan Stewart in 1984. Known for its unconventional take on traditional tartan and its insistence on natural materials and fi ne craftsmenship.3. A chance discovery that tartan twice written includes ANTA in the middle; TARTANTARTAN

ANTA carpet is similar to the original flat woven carpet manufactured in Scotland in the eighteenth century.

Historically flat woven carpet continued to be made until 1930. It was revived in 1985 when ANTA were commissioned to replace an original stair carpet in Inverness.

ANTA have been making flat woven carpet in the Highlands ever since, developing a range of carpets and rugs in natural muted colours.

The carpet rugs are made from British wool with a stain resistant finish, backed with non-slip wool felt and bound with pure wool binding in their workshops.

Made in standard sizes and to customer’s own requirements.

CAWDOR(Scottish Gaelic: Caladar) 1. A village and parish in Nairnshire.2. Fourteenth Century Castle occupied by Earls of Cawdor also known as Thanes of Cawdor, an ancient title associated with Shakespeare's Macbeth.3. ANTA design by Annie Stewart.

oak stair rods

The collection of 24 designs is woven to a maximum width of 170cm.

Stretched and fitted on wool felt, tacked and held in place with a velcro gripper.

It can be used as a runner or seamed where necessary and fitted wall to wall.

It is hard-wearing and treated with a stain-resistant finish which makes it suitable for stairs, landings, halls and corridors.

Flat weave stair runner can be fitted with or without stair rods.

Traditionally when fitted with stair rods the carpet was not cut to the shape of each step. Instead the excess carpet cloth was folded under and held in place by the rod. The advan-tage of this method is periodi-cally it can be moved so that the carpet on each step is repalced by the carpet on each riser.

The stair shown was painted with ANTA Khaki flat oil paint and a Cawdor stair runner was fitted using the traditional method held in place by oak stair rods.

SPONGEWARE 1. Hand decorated pottery with mottled colour motifs applied with a sponge. 2. Produced in Scotland in the 1820s in lesser quatities than in England, and remained popular for the next three decades. 3. Revived by ANTA in the 1980s, Annie Stewart developed a similiar system of applying tartan designs to stoneware pottery.

Suprisingly, tartan pottery was not made in the ninenteenth century considering Queen Victoria's enthusism for all things Scottish. ANTA were the fi rst to make, and have produced a unique range of tartan stoneware since.17 18

The Dunvegan design was developed after Lachlan Stewart had conducted an architectural survey of the Macleod's famous Dunvegan Castle on the Isle of Skye. There he discovered a fragment of heavy fl at-weave tweed that had been made long ago by the tennants of the Macleod-owned island of St Kilda in the Outer Hebrides. It was made in lieu of rent and was used to carpet the Castle. This fragment of wonderfully coloured fl at weave inspired Annie Stewart to make the fi rst of the ANTA carpets.
