1. Advisories

In addition to the incompatibilities noted within the release notes, known non-operational behavior,errors and/or limitations at the time of release are documented in the Known Issues and Limitationsdocument, although not accessible via the ANSYS Help Viewer. See the ANSYS Customer Portal (p. ix)for information about the ANSYS service packs and any additional items not included in the KnownIssues and Limitations document. First-time users of the customer portal must register to create apassword.

2. Installation

The following features are new or changed at Release 17.1. Review these items carefully.

• ANSYS Reaction Design Products (Chemkin) are now included in the product installation and can be selectedon the product selection menu for installation. Release notes specific to Chemkin are included in the ANSYSFluids Products section of this document.

• The ANSYS SpaceClaim Direct Modeler product is now available as a stand-alone package. This product isa 3D direct modeling application that allows users to create, edit, and prepare geometry for engineeringsimulation. For detailed information specific to SpaceClaim 2016, see the most-recent release notes on theANSYS Customer Portal (support.ansys.com) at Knowledge Resources> Online Documentation> Geometry.

• As of this release, the Fatjack and Beamcheck and the Legacy ACIS Reader for ICEM CFD add-on packageswill no longer be available.

3. Licensing

The following enhancements have been made to ANSYS, Inc. Licensing for Release 17.1:

• The ANSYS License Manager Installation automatically updates your modified product order file to includeany product changes that have occurred in the most recently installed release.

• You may safely continue using the 17.0 License Manager; it is not necessary to upgrade to the 17.1 LicenseManager, unless you need to take advantage of any new features.

• ANSYS will soon begin issuing CVD licenses to Electronics customers. To ensure that this license is fullysupported, we recommend that Electronics customers upgrade to the 17.1 LM now.

4. Documentation

Documentation is now installed per-product; only the documentation associated with the products youinstall will be included by default. You can choose to install all documentation by running a document-ation-only install from the installation launcher.

7. ANSYS Elastic Licensing

Beginning with ANSYS 17.1, pay-per-use licensing is offered in conjunction with traditional lease andpaid-up licensing. ANSYS Elastic Licensing provides hourly-based access to all ANSYS products (with theexception of the Semiconductor applications and SCADE applications) through a single license calledANSYS Elastic Units.

Available in three phases, the infrastructure was launched with five Cloud Hosting Partners in March2016. In conjunction with ANSYS 17.1, the offering is available on the ANSYS Enterprise Cloud runningAWS. ANSYS Elastic Licensing is targeted for on-premise deployment in the fourth quarter of 2016.

The HPC capabilities for each of the solvers remain as they were in previous releases. Release 17.1 includes several new features and enhancements that result in product behaviors thatdiffer from previous releases. These behavior changes are presented below.

• Auto Suppression of Coordinate Systems. In line with the behaviors of objects such as contact regions,joints, or springs, Mechanical now automatically suppresses a user-defined coordinate system when thegeometry that the coordinate system is scoped to becomes suppressed. In previous releases, the coordinatesystem would be marked as underdefined (with a "?").

1.2. General Enhancements

The following general enhancements have been made at Release 17.1:

• Import and Export Named Selections. Mechanical now enables you to import and/or export element- andnode-based Named Selections in Mechanical APDL common database (.cdb) file format.

• Filtering the Tree Outline. The option Environment has been added to the tree filtering feature. For ananalysis with multiple environments, you can filter the tree for a specific environment. Once selected, allobjects specific to the environment, are displayed in the tree.

For Release 17.1, there has been an emphasis on improvements in performance. The modeling ply updatehas been reworked. The handling of the Fabric option Ignore for Postprocessing has been adaptedas well. Both changes yield significant reductions in update time for large models.

5.1.2. Variable Offset Selection Rule

The Variable Offset Selection Rule has been fully incorporated into ACP. Previously this selection rulewas available as an ACP add-on. This selection rule is an advance version of the Tube Selection Rule,combined with Ply Tapering. The Variable Offset Selection Rule allows you to select elements at varyingoffsets from an Edge Set. If the same selection rule is applied to multiple Modeling Plies, a tapering canalso be defined. The offsets are defined using Look-up Tables and can be measured directly or along acurvature.

5.1.3. Enhancements to Python User Interface

The access to model information through the Python user interface has been extended. The mesh_queryfunction now allows you to directly and quickly access model information such as elemental area,volume, or weight.

5.1.4. CAD Geometry Handling

• For overset meshes, it is now possible to specify that the cell donor priority used in the overlapminimization of an overset interface is based on the distance to the nearest boundary, ratherthan the cell size. • For overset meshes, a numerical treatment that will let the solver attempt to run with orphancells is now available (see Donor Search Fails Due to Orphan Cells for details).

The following is a list of new or recently discovered limitations known to exist in ANSYS Fluent 17.1.Where possible, suggested workarounds are provided.

• Parallel Processing

– The Fluent process binding (affinity) setting is not supported for Windows machines with morethan 64 cores that are using the Platform MPI communication library, which may increase processingtime. As a workaround, you can use Intel MPI or disable hyper-threading (if the machine has Intelprocessors) to lower the core count to be equal to or below 64.

1.4. Resolved Issues and Limitations

Release 17.1 addresses many issues and limitations that have existed in previous releases of ANSYSFluent, including the following:

• Meshes

– The dynamic layering method can now be used to split or merge cells adjacent to moving facezones that are connected to coupled walls (that is, walls with a shadow face zone).

– A fix has been introduced to address compatibility issues between overset meshes and mesh inter-faces.

• Solver

– A fix has been introduced for transient cases that have a sliding interface and also use the node-based gradient method for spatial discretization. Such cases had been observed to have a memorymanagement issue in version 17.0, which could cause the Fluent session to use up all of the systemmemory and terminate if the number of time steps was sufficiently large.

• Graphics, Postprocessing, and Reporting

– Phase quantities and custom field functions on native polyhedra meshes (as opposed to convertedpolyhedra) are now properly interpolated with node-weight based interpolation.

– The net results of flux report definitions are now correct for all types of boundary conditions, includingporous jump, radiator, and fans.

– Overset mesh now displays correct node values at overset boundaries with contour plots.

– A fix has been introduced to ensure that moment report definitions produce correct results for 2Dcases.

– For cases in which you have changed the temperature unit from Kelvin to Celsius or Fahrenheit,the plots of report definitions have been corrected so that the y-axis label lists the unit as K, whichcorresponds to the displayed data (which is in Kelvin).

• Workbench

– A fix has been introduced for cases in which Fluent in Workbench is run on Linux, to ensure thatthe Solution tab (opened using the Show Solution Monitoring option in the Solution cell contextmenu) properly displays the Fluent Solution Images (enabled in the View menu).

– You can now initialize a downstream Fluent simulation on a modified mesh, using a data interpolationfile (*.ip) created from an upstream, connected Fluent system of the same geometry.

Boundary Conditions

• A fix has been introduced for cases with mass-flow inlets defined with a cylindrical or local cylindricalcoordinate system, to ensure that the results at such inlets match those obtained by Fluent in versionsprior to 17.0.

Discrete Phase Model

• The Lagrangian wall-film model has been revised to correct a problem that may arise in cases involvingwall-film separation of wet combusting particles. Such cases are common in SCR applications (selectivecatalytic reduction, that is, urea injection for exhaust gas after treatment).

• A new warning has been added for simulations with unsteady DPM particle tracking, which reports ifany fraction of the discrete phase mass is "behind in time". This indicates that the maximum numberof particle integration steps was not always sufficient to allow the particles to move for the entirety ofthe fluid time. If you receive this warning during a calculation or when opening a previous simulation,you can use the reported percentage values to determine if it is a significant enough discrepancy towarrant revising the simulation to have a higher value for Max. Number of Steps in the Tracking tabof the Discrete Phase Model dialog box. Note that while the higher value will allow more particles tobe tracked for the entire time step, it may increase the processing time; depending on the case, it maybe that only a few particles require much more time than the others, and can be allowed to remain"incomplete".

Eulerian Multiphase Models

• In multiphase porous media (VOF, Mixture, and Eulerian multiphase models), the 17.0 solver returneddifferent values of pressure drop for inertial resistances and the power law than the 15.0 solver. A fixhas been introduced in order to match the solution results of release 15.0.

User-Defined Scalars

• A problem related to the calculation of user-defined scalar (UDS) diffusivity has been corrected. Thismay affect UDS results in multiphase mixtures, as well as in add-on modules making use of UDS diffus-ivity.

Parallel Processing

• When using the Intel MPI communication library on Windows, the default process binding (affinity)setting has been changed from that of Fluent to that of Intel MPI, and the message stating thatthe affinity has been set will no longer be displayed at startup when a case is read. The settingchange makes it possible to enable process binding for more than 64 cores, but otherwise it willnot affect results and should not affect processing time. To revert to the previous behavior, use

Such surface mechanisms may be used with the Particle Trackingoption with 0-D batch reactors, Perfectly Stirred Reactors (PSRs), Plug Flow Reactors (PFRs) and reactornetworks consisting of PSRs and PFRs. A new tutorial has been added to introduce this capability.

• Improved the speed of the Chemkin-Pro solver for all transient simulations and for all mechanism sizes.

• For all Internal Combustion (IC) Engine models, the following enhancements were added:

– When a piston offset is defined in IC engine simulations, the crank angle values in the solution outputare now referenced to the “actual”TDC (top dead center) of the cylinder, rather than the crank-armlocation, to be consistent with ANSYS Forte CFD. In other words, the simulation crank angle is definedto be 0 at the minimal cylinder volume. In previous versions, the TDC of the crank shaft rotation wasused as the reference for the crank angle values.

– An option to specify the engine’s “effective compression ratio”, was added. This option can be usedinstead of specifying the Intake Valve Closure (IVC) crank angle to specify the starting point of an ICengine simulation. The effective compression ratio is defined as the ratio of cylinder volume at IVCand the clearance volume (i.e., cylinder volume at TDC).

– For all IC engine models, Chemkin will automatically estimate the fuel lower heating value based onthe fuel (surrogate) composition specified in the initial gas charge in the cylinder if the fuel heatingvalue is not explicitly provided as an input.

• For the Spark-Ignition (SI) Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) Zonal Model, the convergence performanceis improved.

8.2. ANSYS Energico Add-On to Chemkin-Pro 17.1

This is the first release for which ANSYS Chemkin-Pro with the Energico Add-On are included in theANSYS Unified Installer. In addition, there are several important enhancements in ANSYS Energico 17.1,

Chapter 1: Geometry Release Notes

This section summarizes the new features in DesignModeler Release 17.1:

Export of Symmetry/Enclosure Data

The creation of named selections and coordinate systems during model transfer for symmetry planesin the Symmetry and Enclosure features is now controlled by Export Symmetry / Export Enclosureproperties. This allows users to skip the creation of these additional attributes if they aren't desired intheir analysis downstream. The default value for the Export property is yes.

Model Units Property

When importing ACIS files, DesignModeler will now infer the model units from the ACIS file itself bydefault. The user may still override the model units setting by choosing a specific length unit.

Parameter Property

Parameters from imported CAD sources can now be processed via three options: None, Independent,or All. Independent is equivalent to the behavior in prior versions, whereas All will now import read-only parameters in addition to independent, editable parameters. When promoted, the parametersshow as output parameters in the Parameter Manager.

SpaceClaim Direct Modeler geometry can now be saved to and opened from Teamcenter, via the File> Save To Teamcenter menu option.

This section summarizes the new features in CAD Integration Release 17.1:

Coordinate Systems Filter Prefixes

An unrestricted number of prefixes (including exclusion prefixes) can now be applied to the CoordinateSystems option. The geometry import preference keys (parameter, attribute, named selection, and co-ordinate systems) all support the negation (-) option in the preference list.

• For the sweep method, the mesh pattern is improved on source faces.

• For fracture meshing, mesh quality and pattern are improved at the crack tip.

6.1.1. Blocking visualization

New options are available for visuallizing blocking:

• Tools for selecting and deselecting blocks for Blanking have been improved. Menu options have beenadded to blank blocks by type (mapped, swept, free). For manual selection, you can now deselect ablock by holding the Shift key while clicking.

• A Find Worst elements option has been added to the Pre-Mesh menu in the display tree. The criterionfor determining the worst elements is selected in the Settings → Meshing Options → Hexa Meshingmenu.

• The Pre-Mesh Quality Check and Find Worst elements tools have enhanced support for all types ofmesh elements.

• An option to Show Hidden vertices has been added to Blocking → Vertices in the Display tree.

6.1.2. Editing blocks

New options are available for splitting blocks:

• The Split Block → Imprint Face option supports single loops; multiple loops of edges, either nestedor separated; and loops that include boundary edges.

• A By imprint option has been added to the Split Block → Split Free Block menu to imprint edges andsplit the free block in a single operation.

• A Merge parallel blocks control has been added to the Edit Block → Convert Block Type → Sweptoption to merge all adjacent mapped faces prior to sweeping.

• The Edit Block → Convert Block Type → Convert free block free face to mapped option can nowconvert faces with more than four sides.

• The Edit Block → Merge Faces option supports Mapped or Free faces.

• A Force merging option has been added to Blocking → Merge Vertices. If enabled, mapped faces offree blocks are converted to free faces where required to complete the merge.

• An Automatic Spline option has been added to the Edit Edge → Split Edge Method list.

6.1.3. Replay Control editor

An internal text editor has been added for Replay Control scripts. You can choose to use the internaleditor or an external text editor in the Settings → General menu. The ICEM CFD application windowremains unlocked when using the internal editor.

6.1.4. Miscellaneous

• The interface and options for Import Model have been improved.

6.2. Documentation

All documentation for ANSYS ICEM CFD Release 17.1 is accessible using the Help menu. Visit theANSYS ICEM CFD website for more information.

Chapter 7: Fluent Meshing Release Notes

7.1. Changes in Product Behavior from Previous Releases

• For CAD import, there is now an additional option for feature extraction. This option is enabled by default.

• For CAD import, the part name is added to the object and zone names on import only when the objectgranularity is set to body, by default. Hence, when importing with the object granularity set to part or file,by default, the part name is no longer included in the zone names or added as a prefix to face zone labelsand region names.

• The mesh check will now fail if cells have faces with very small non-zero face areas. Such cells should becorrected before computing the flow solution.

• Non conformals will be used as quad-tet transition elements for pre-partitioned parallel meshing.

7.2. New Features

The new features available in the meshing mode in Fluent include enhancements to many existingfeatures and improved robustness through defect fixes.

CAD ImportThe following enhancements have been made:

• There is now an additional option for feature extraction which is enabled by default.

• A new command enables you to choose whether to add the part names from the CAD file to the objectand zone names on import. The part name is added to the both object and zone names on import onlywhen the object granularity is set to body, by default.

• You can use the CAD Assemblies option to obtain a representation of the CAD tree in Fluent Meshingon CAD import.This mode offers additional tools for the imported CAD data.

– The CAD assemblies tree enables faster visualization which saves time in part management for large,complex models comprising multiple assemblies.

– It enables re-importing or updating of selected parts or bodies using different faceting qualities andtopology representations from a neutral database file.

– Geometry and mesh objects can be easily created for only those assemblies, parts, or bodies that areneeded for the analysis. Other assemblies, parts, or bodies can be simply suppressed.

– The geometry and mesh objects are linked to the corresponding CAD objects (which are then locked),enabling quick design changes and updates.

– Labels can be assigned to entities, and these are preserved throughout the object-based meshingworkflow in Fluent Meshing.

• The External Model component’s Process Coordinate Systems property enables the External Modelsystem to import any Cartesian and Cylindrical coordinate systems defined in mesh files. This data istransferred to downstream Mechanical systems.

• From the External Model system, you can now choose to import node- and/or element-based compon-ents from solid and shell finite element mesh files to Mechanical as Named Selections. You can alsospecify components keys in order to filter the components contained in your mesh file. The followingnew properties are available for the External Model component system to support these new capabil-ities.

1.6. Enhancement to Mechanical Model Cells

You can use an External Data component to import a circuit board’s trace layout file (TGZ, Ansoft ANF,or Cadence BRD, MCMP, or SIP) for use by a Mechanical system’s Model cell. The External Data com-ponent also enables you to perform rigid transformations to the trace file.

1.7. FE Modeler

Release 17.1 for FE Modeler has no new features or enhancements.

1.8. System Coupling

The following enhancements were made to System Coupling for Release 17.1:

• CFX supports two-way thermal data transfer with System Coupling. For details, see Coupling CFX to an Ex-ternal Solver: System Coupling Simulations in the CFX-Solver Modeling Guide.

Type Icons for Auto-Completion SuggestionsEach auto-completion suggestion includes an icon indicating whether the suggestion is a method, property,namespace, enumeration, variable, or type.

Enhanced Auto-Completion Tooltip FunctionalityACT Console auto-completion tooltips now include syntax color-coding and can provide additional typesof data, including scope variables, .NET properties, prototype information, details on overloaded methods,and warning messages.

Repeat Icon in Command History WindowIn the ACT Console’s Command History window, a new “repeat” icon enables you to repeat the currentstatement.

Multiple-Step Custom Templates for AIM

Multiple-step custom templates provide expanded process-compression and automation capabilitiesfor AIM. You can now create a custom template that walks end users step-by-step through a complexsimulation in AIM. You can also provide custom help of two types: step-level help that displays in thecontext-sensitive help panel, and property-level help that displays in the field-level help pop-ups.

Chapter 4: ANSYS EKM Release Notes

ANSYS Engineering Knowledge Manager (EKM) 17.1 consists of EKM, the EKM server product, and itscompanion web application. The following sections provide an overview of new features and enhance-ments in ANSYS EKM 17.1.

4.1. New Features and Enhancements

If you have used previous versions of EKM, Release 17.1 offers several changes and improvements:

Installation and Configuration

• You can configure EKM to automatically retrieve each user's User name, First name, Last name and Emailfrom an LDAP server, saving time and effort when creating or updating EKM user accounts.

• If users will be submitting jobs to EKM from Workbench, and Workbench and RSM are installed on differentmachines, and use different paths to refer to the same physical job directory, an optional pathMappingssetting in the ekm.xml file enables you to map directory paths on the Workbench machine to paths usedon the RSM machine or cluster node where jobs run.

Data Management

• Users with a Basic access level can access and execute shared search queries.

Job Management

• Changes to the job submission wizard provide an enhanced user experience with improved flow, navigation,and ease of use.

• The built-in job templates now support pre-16.0 solvers, and the chosen Solver version is reported in thejob status view.

• Administrators can now track users' cluster usage by adding a custom cluster job name field to the jobsubmission wizard. The name entered by the user is reported in the RSM job log, creating a traceable pieceof data that links the EKM job to a specific account.

• In Cloud deployments, if you find the traffic to the Cluster Monitor page to be too heavy, you can optionallyadd a maxHttpClientConnections setting to the <clusterMonitor> setting in the ekm.xml fileto allow more concurrent connections between the HttpClient and CycleCloud. If unspecified, the defaultvalue is 10.

• EKM now supports job submission from Workbench via Workbench's new Submit to Portal update optionfor solutions, design point updates, and component updates.

• When running a Fluent server-mode job, using the Interrupt action in the Job Monitor stops Fluent andsaves a case and data file whose filenames indicate when the solution was stopped.

• In the CFX job template, the default Partition Type is now MeTis k-way.

• When running a CFX job, live convergence monitors now appear in the job status view, and you can choosewhich monitors you want to display. You can also stop the solution if desired.

• When setting up an interactive job, if you select a queue that is associated with a Neutro job scheduler, youcan submit the job to a visualization host with a particular tag. If a node does not have a tag, it will categorizedby the amount of available memory.

Process Management

• When defining a node, batch node or custom dialog node in a process template, a new Allow assignee tobe changed option lets you prevent the task's assignee from being changed to another user.

• When defining an auto node in a process template, a new Assignee setting lets you specify whether theautomated task will run in the EKM session of the Process Creator or the Previous Node Assignee.

General Enhancements

• EKM now runs on the Microsoft Edge browser.

• EKM is no longer supported on Internet Explorer 10.

4.2. Issues Resolved in this Release

Below are the major issues that have been resolved since the release of 17.0.

• The ANSYS EKM server product installation on Windows no longer prevents you from setting the EKM tempdirectory to a UNC path.

• When configuring JBoss to communicate with the front-end web server via the mod_cluster load balancer,the HTTP and AJP protocols in the JBoss configuration now contain max-post-size and max-paramet-ers settings. The max-post-size setting prevents errors when uploading large files to EKM via the FileTransfer Client. The max-parameters setting prevents an exception from occurring when adding a designpoint to a project that contains a large number of design points.

• In Cloud deployments, EKM can now better handle heavy traffic to the Cluster Monitor page to ensureusers get access when they need it. If necessary, an optional maxHttpClientConnections parametercan be added to the <clusterMonitors> setting in the ekm.xml file to increase the number of concurrentconnections between the HttpClient and CycleCloud.

• A multi-configuration simulation run using the built-in CFX job template no longer fails. The CFX job templatehas been updated.

• When a download alert is set on a Workbench project archive (.wbpz file), you will no longer receive anemail alert for each individual file in the archive. A single email will be sent instead.

• The simulation details report is now properly updated following a project update or design point updateof an R17 Workbench project.

• When creating a connection to a file or folder on a remote file server, an error no longer occurs if the remotefile server address points to a local path on the EKM server, and the rsmLauncherURL setting in theekm.xml file is pointing to a different machine.

• When using the command line during an MAPDL job that was started with the Start MAPDL job template,specifying a path with a space no longer causes the solver to hang.

The following enhancements have been added to ANSYS DesignXplorer 17.1:

Auto-Refinement for Genetic Aggregation Response Surfaces

The Genetic Aggregation response surface offers automatic refinement based on user-defined tolerances.Once begun, the auto-refinement process handles design point failures and continues until one of thestopping criteria has been met. Refinement properties enable you to determine the number and spreadof your refinement points, indicate how output variables will be considered, and specify the minimumallowable distance between refinement points. For more information, see Genetic Aggregation andGenetic Aggregation Properties.

You can enable auto-refinement in the Tolerances table by selecting at least one output parameterfor refinement and specifying a tolerance value for it. The auto-refinement will include only outputswith tolerance values defined. For more information, see Genetic Aggregation Tolerances Table.

A Convergence chart is available for Genetic Aggregation response surfaces with at least one outputparameter selected for auto-refinement in the Tolerances table. The X-axis shows the number of refine-ment points. The Y-axis displays the ratio between the Maximum Predicted Error and the Tolerance foreach output parameter, with each refined output represented by a curve corresponding to this ratio.For more information, see Genetic Aggregation Convergence Chart.

Computation Enhancements for the Local Sensitivity Chart

Modifications to how the response surface Local Sensitivity chart calculates values provide moreconsistent normalization of results. A new Axes Range property determines the range used for thechart’s Y-axis, enabling you to specify whether axes bounds correspond to the range given by the Min-Max Search results or to the range of the calculated data with the largest variation.
