Competitive Positioning

Heat Transfer between Fluid and Fabricated Solid Structure Components

Multilayer shell conduction, anisotropic thermal conductivity, surface-to-surface (S2S) radiation model now supports non-conformal meshes

No need to mesh the thin structure, even if it is made of different layers of materials

Faster pre-processing while maintaining high accuracy

Any application with heat transfer from a large fluid volume to a thin surface (e.g. under-hood heat transfer)

This closes the gap with CD-adapco for these applications. It is ahead of other competitors.

Turbomachinery Design and Analysis

Worked in tight collaboration with key customers to improve turbo models and workflow, add pragmatic solutions for key challenges like blade flutter and forced response.

As turbomachinery blade designs are optimized further and further, more detailed analysis is needed to make additional improvements (capturing transient flow details, accurately capturing the interaction between fluid and structure)

These new developments can help expand usage at existing and new turbomachinery accounts, and also demonstrate our continuing focus on providing leading rotating machinery simulation capabilities.

This is a strong competitive advantage for ANSYS. Numeca has a similar solution but does not have the breadth that ANSYS Fluid Dynamics solutions offer. CD-Adapco has no such solution.

Optimization for Electronics Cooling

Icepak parameters are available to the Workbench parameter manager. Allows design points, optimization, design of experiments and robust design for electronics cooling simulation.

Engineers dealing with electronic thermal management issues often need to test different configurations as well as optimize them. Thus model parameterization and optimization capabilities are needed.

Electronic Industry – thermal management is an increasing concern with high performance devices, higher power densities and smaller packaging. They need to evaluate multiple design alternatives and parametric simulation is the most effective.

This closes the competitive gap with FlowTHERM automatic optimization module

Blow Molding and Thermoforming

Users can expect a reduction by a factor of 2 in the required memory while the computation speed doubles. In blow molding and thermoforming simulations, the mesh is adapted to the large deformations for improved accuracy.

In the packaging industry, saving even 1 gr. of material per package can results in millions in saving. Engineers need to have tools to predict the structure and resistance of those packages (transport, storage, and usage by consumers)

Packaging industry

Our solver capabilities, combined with the extensive Multiphysics capabilities for stress tests, drop tests, etc. makes ANSYS Polyflow the leader in the packaging industry. Only injection molding applications are dominated by AUTODESK Moldlflow

Nonlinear Solutions

We can now solve for up to 50% more deformation for highly nonlinear models because of the new adaptive remeshing capability for large strain (elastomer) models.

Very high deformation of a rubber seal adds numerical complexity to a model and often result in solutions that do not converge because of high element distortion. The mesh needs to be modified during the simulation in order to get a solution.

Products with seal s, seal manufactures and rubber part manufacturers are target users.

This is a first step in removing a weakness against MSC Marc. We are now able to better compete against Abaqus.

High Performance Computing (HPC)

At ANSYS 15, GPU acceleration can be enabled through all ANSYS HPC product licenses, i.e. ANSYS HPC, ANSYS HPC Pack, ANSYS HPC Workgroup, and ANSYS HPC Enterprise.

GPU hardware is an effective way to improve the HPC performance for structural analysis problems. However, GPU acceleration for the structural mechanics products was only supported by the ANSYS HPC Pack license.

GPU brings a strong speed-up to bulky 3D, linear models. Every customer dealing with (large) 3D assemblies, bonded contact (welded, glued or bolted connections) are potential targets.

Our main competitors also support GPU and exhibit similar performance. What differentiates us is the licensing model.

Meshing Speed Improvements

We now have parallel part-by-part meshing which gives up to 27x speedup over current serial meshing of large assemblies.

More and more simulations involve complex models made of dozens, hundreds and sometimes thousands of parts. Sequentially meshing all parts is a time consuming process.

Customers dealing with large assemblies (50+ parts) are likely to benefit the most from the capability. It should be used as a strong argument against competitors such as FEMAP, Abaqus CAE and CAD embedded tools.

This acceleration in our meshing process helps counter the argument of Altair or Abaqus about the lack of efficiency of Workbench in the meshing phase.
