Born in 1936, he had to experience the horrors of communal violence and leave Lylapur(modern day Faisalabad) because of this. On his way to Phagwara in India, he had to board a train stacked with dead bodies. When he was playing for the Khalsa Sporting Club, he caught the attention of bigger clubs in Kolkata. He later transferred to Mohun Bagan where he was the first Sikh player to lead the club. He is best known for his heroics in the India run to the Gold Medal in 1962 Asian Games. Although gravely injured in the quarter finals, he took the field in the semi final with 6 stitches in head and amazingly headed in the winning goal.
