Cutting-edge technology and reliable partnership AnoxKaldnes is a high technology company focusing on biological wastewater treatment. With several strong trademarks, such as AnoxKaldnes™ MBBR biofilm process, BAS™ biological process, Hybas™ biological process, and ANITA™ Mox biological process, all of which are associated with fundamental knowledge and cutting-edge technology. The AnoxKaldnes™ MBBR (Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor) technology is our implementation of the biofilm principle. The MBBR utilizes the advantages of activated sludge and biofilm systems without being restrained by their disadvantages. The basic idea behind the AnoxKaldnesTM biofilm technology is to have a continuously operating, non-clogging biofilm reactor with no need for backwashing, low head loss and high specific biofilm surface area. Innovative carrier design There is a continuous research and development of the AnoxKaldnes™ MBBR technology. Existing processes are improved and processes for new applications are invented. A broad range of different carrier types has been developed in order to target the specific needs for different solutions

New Z-400 AnoxKaldnes™ biofilm carrier

The latest AnoxKaldnes innovation on carrier design brings together decades of experience with MBBR’s and a deep understanding of microbiological processes. This Z family of carriers have the unique ability to limit the biofilm depth to a guaranteed thickness. In this way, MBBR systems can be customized to provide unique solutions where others have failed. Mechanical control of the biofilm thickness provides a way to minimize the boundary layer and maximize substrate diffusion which translates to a number of benefits including, but not limited to, higher removal rates and targeted pollutant removal.

Garpenberg, Sweden Zinc, gold, silver, copper and led mine Boliden AB, a Swedish mining company, carried out a major expansion of the Garpenberg mine (Sweden) from 2011 to 2014. To be able to handle the new stringent outlet requirement for nitrogen an efficient nitrogen removal process had to be installed. Veolia secured the contract and installed the AnoxKaldnes™ MBBR process for biological nitrogen removal. The plant is constructed and designed for pre-denitrification, 2-stage nitrification, post-denitrification, plus a reoxidation stage for carbon reduction. The outlet limit of soluble nitrogen is set to ≤ 2mg/l, but the plant produces effluent with 1,5-1,6 mg TN/l on a monthly average, exceeding the client ’ s expectations.

Selenium removal MBBR is a viable solution for biological selenium removal from both power plant and mine effluents. By combining the MBBR technology with traditional chemical post treatment, very low effluent concentrations can be reached. Selenium, mainly in the form of selenate (Se6+) can be present in industrial waste waters and is toxic to the environment, the discharge limit is currently set to <5 µg/L for release into fresh water systems, in North America. Selenate can be removed biologically by reduction to the elementary form. This transformation makes the selenium insoluble so that it can be separated from the wastewater, using traditional liquid-solid separation methods. The advantages of the MBBR technology are well known and these benefits can provide cost savings and operational flexibility to the mining and power market.
