Transcript of Another great St. Patrick s Day party at Joe and Lynn Faherty...
Iniezione The newsletter of the NorthWest Alfa Romeo Club
Anyone who has been a member of the NorthWest Alfa
Romeo Club for even a short time knows that the annual St.
Patrick’s Day event that Joe and Lynn Faherty host every
year is one of the best events that the club has to offer. Eve-
ry year since I have been a
member of the club (I joined
back in 2011) I have looked
forward to attending this
event, but for some reason
something has always come
up in the past which has pre-
vented me from attending.
This year I told my wife, Ce-
cilia, that I am going to Joe
and Lynn’s St. Patrick’s Day
party no matter what.
I have never been to Fox Island before, where Joe and
Lynn live. They
sure are blessed
to be able to live
in such a nice
location and en-
joy what would
be described by
many as the ide-
al Pacific North-
west environ-
ment. I arrived
early and was
able to join Gordy Hyde and Dolly Samson for a walk down
to the beach. It was very interesting to watch Gordy trying to
remember what path to take to get down to the beach. Ap-
parently he has been there before, but you would never know
by how many different approach-
es he tried along the way.
Once we got back up to the
house many other people had
arrived and were ready for enjoy-
ing some delicious food and com-
panionship. Joe and Lynn pre-
pared lots of great food and
many people brought nice side
dishes to share. Lamb stew,
corned beef and fish pie were
just some of the great dishes
available.
I tried a Harp pilsner/lager
beer from Ireland for the first
time, and it was fantastic. I
never knew about this Irish
brand, but it truly is one of my
favorite beers now that I know
about it.
While I was enjoying my
food and the conversa-
tion I received a call on
my cell phone. The
caller ID said that it
was Fred Russell; I
thought that maybe his
new Giulia had broken
down on the way to
Joe and Lynn’s and he
was calling to see if I
could come and pick
him up with my 1991
164L, which runs flaw-
lessly. Nope, that was-
n’t what he wanted at all. Fred told me that he was
not going to be able to make it to the party as he
originally had planned and

In years past, we’ve had April Fool articles and news in
our newsletter. Al Faromeo used to write articles about the
first Alfa 8C at Ferrari of Seattle, or a partnership between
Mazda and Alfa… oh, that one almost came true. We told of
regrouping the chapters into combined regions but this, and
all other zany stories like it were just in fun. The problem is,
these “funny” ideas are becoming harder to create. For ex-
ample, I’m tempted to joke that Alfa will build a bigger SUV
and to make it even funnier, I’d say it would be a hybrid. I
might even write some joke story about how Alfa is doing in
F1, knowing it’s been years since they offered up a car. See
how tough this is… both things are actually true. How am I
supposed to be funny when it’s actual reality? FCA has
plans for a larger SUV Hybrid, and Charles Leclerc brought
the Sauber Alfa Romeo F1 car in 13th in the Australian GP
race, 76 seconds behind the leader. He was 2.5 seconds
ahead of Lance Stroll and still on the lead lap. Big Alfa SUVs
and F1 cars… I can’t even guess what’s coming next.
Perhaps it’s best to ignore what month it is and simply cel-
ebrate that spring is in the air. So are a few snowflakes, but
this is the transition time of daffodils and snowfall. Enjoy
them both as the flowers become more common and the
snow more scarce. After all, we’ve already enjoyed a Spring
drive, thanks to Paul Melrose and the NW Citroen club.
We’ve had a couple of good NWARC meetings and more are
coming. Heck, on a Tuesday we had 38 people join us just
south of downtown Seattle for our March meeting, held at The
Shop. The space hosted us well, produced good food for us
and the service was outstanding, especially considering our
crowd and timing. Well done, Derby. Also, a huge thank you
goes to Lynn & Joe Faherty for hosting our annual St. Pat-
ricks Day gathering and to all who attended. If that isn’t
enough, a week ago, one of our members, Aaron Brooks, ran
the first LeMons race of the season down in Sonoma. Then
in late April, our SoCal member Steve Schaeffer will be racing
in a Lucky Dog race at The Ridge. Clearly, it’s not just car
exhaust. Spring really is in the air.
Though Spring brings the joy of new growth for the sea-
son, it can also bring sadness. Many members have known
Georges and Arlette Hebrant for many, many years. In the
90's Georges was our club president, and Arlette would host
the club officers for dinner meetings. Events, gatherings,
Georges always had Arlette with him and they shared support
of NWARC. It is with sadness that I tell you that Arlette lost
her battle with cancer last week. NWARC presented flowers
at the services and made a donation in memory of Arlette E.
Hebrant to the Brigid Collins Family Support Center in Mount
Vernon. This organization does a fantastic job in helping and
supporting abused children. Thank you to the members who
have treated Arlette so well over the years and for our "family"
gathering at our last Festa
where Arlette was able to enjoy
our event and the spirit of the
holidays and the Alfa family.
Please keep Georges and their
family in your thoughts.
A thank you to Gordy for set-
ting up our next club meeting.
Member Greg Miller will be the
guest speaker, regaling us with tales of his wandering around
the country.
As the president, it’s great to see the team working well.
Our treasurer keeping tabs on everything from debts and bills
to taxes and doing it perfectly. People planning events, creat-
ing newsletters, putting band aids on the website… whatever
it takes. I also appreciate the newsletter input by Gene Da-
vis, Gordy Hyde, Debi Schmid, Paul & Kristy Affolter and of
course Jon Inge. Nicely done by all.
Summer drives are going to be hot… perhaps literally and
definitely figuratively. Between the AROC convention pre-
tours, regular NWARC drives and even the AROO drives, you
have lots of great options to join along with other members in
their old and new Alfas doing what we do so well - enjoying
the NW sights, sounds and twisty roads. For example, the
pre-tour drives have a loop from Olympia to the ocean and
back. On another loop we take you up to Paradise on Mt.
Rainier, to Lake Tipsoo and then back. The third loop option
is to run down to Mt St. Helens to see the stunning remains
and the 38 years of slow recovery from the volcanic eruption.
The Half-Fast Lap of Washington will be a scenic loop around
the varied ecosystems and terrain of the Olympic Peninsula.
We’ll make a clockwise loop starting with the heavily wooded
and logged southwest area and then aim for Lake Quinault.
Day two explores both the beauty and ruggedness of the
Washington beaches and then into the Hoh Rain Forest be-
fore heading towards Lake Crescent. Day three takes us to
Cape Flattery before lunch and then to the upper flanks of
Hurricane Ridge to wrap up our journeys. It’s going to be a
great summer for Alfisti.
It’s great to see new members joining every month, some
with old cars, some with new. If you are reading this as a
new member, thank you for joining and welcome to AROC /
NWARC. If you are reading this as a long-standing member,
we appreciate your moral and financial support. If you’re not
a member, we appreciate your enthusiasm and interest and
we’d love it if you’d go to AROC-USA.org and sign up.
Thanks also to the many members who have responded to
our survey. By being a member, you control what you get
from this club as we go forward.

The Iniezione is the monthly newsletter of the Northwest Alfa Romeo Club, a non-profit organization of Alfa Ro-meo enthusiasts. NWARC is a regional chapter of the national Alfa Romeo Owners Club (AROC). Chapter meet-ings are typically held the second Tuesday of most months except December. Membership dues are $68 per year, which includes subscriptions to the digital and/or print versions of the Iniezione and the monthly national publica-tion, Alfa Owner. Informazioni Generali
On April 10 we gather again at Wild About
Cars Garage in Kirkland. After a business
meeting we’ll be treated to a presentation by
long-time NWARC member Greg Miller. In
December 2016, Greg and his wife, Toni,
embarked upon a yearlong motorhome tour
of the USA and
Canada, with a
side trip to Cu-
ba.
Greg will tell
stories of the
adventure, and
of how towing an M3 behind a motor-home
for a year, with occasional stops at race-
tracks around the country, can affect one’s
view of retirement - and life! It’s certain to be
an interesting and entertaining evening.
Please remember to pre-order your dinner
to be delivered or bring something you want
to eat. Don’t forget to bring any magazines
that you want to pass along to other mem-
bers. See you there!

Next Club Meetings
John Paul van Rensburg has again of-
fered to host NWARC for the May meeting.
When we went to press, John was still plan-
ning the topic, but he promised something
“out of the box”. This will not be the normal,
“This is
where we
work on
Alfas (and
other
cars) and
these are
the cars
we are presently working
on.” Maybe a pasta-
making demonstration? Or
‘how to make limoncello at
home in your spare time’?
In any case, ‘save the
date’ to see the changes G2 is undergoing as
well as attending an interesting and social
gathering. More details in the May issue .

asked me to let Joe
and Lynn know. In
typical Fred-style
smoothness he then
asked if I wouldn’t
mind writing an arti-
cle about the party
for the Iniezione and
send it to Jon. Well
of course I couldn’t
say no to Fred, so I
reluctantly but po-
litely agreed. Gordy
asked me who I was
talking to and I told him what happened. He seemed to be
quite happy with that as he thought that he was going to be
the one who would have to write the article! He must have felt
sorry for me and said that if I wrote it he would share some
pictures of the event. Thanks, Gordy!
Seriously though, Joe and Lynn are two of the nicest mem-
bers of our great car club and I thoroughly enjoyed their St.
Patrick’s Day party. I am
glad that I was finally
able to attend after all
these years and I hope
to be able to make it
again next year. I also
want to remind everyone
that if you are ever en-
joying a club event and
you get a call from Fred
Russell, think twice
about answering (just
kidding!).

About forty vehi-
cles of many makes,
shapes and sizes car-
rying 69 odd car lov-
ers (you can read that
either way) followed
Paul Melrose in his
1960 Panhard PL17
on the back roads of
King County on March 18. The weather
looked a bit iffy when we met in Newcastle,
but by the time we finished at Oddfella’s Res-
taurant (how appropriate) in Auburn, a few of
the hardiest drivers had
their convertible tops
down.
NWARC was well rep-
resented by the Alfas of
Kim and Paula Buty (85
Graduate), Jason
Frautschi and son Hans-
Karl (72 Spider), Merril
and Heidi Gordon (82
GTV6 Balocco edition),
Diego Lasheras and Marty Hill (76 Alfetta). Oth-
er Alfisti attendees driving ‘off-brands’ included
Michael Leonetti, Thomas Mous and son Alex
(celebrating the 25th birthday of their Miata),
Fred Russell, Alex Sargent, Dolly Samson and
me.
One of the more comical elements of the drive was
watching Alex Sargent in his “Hello, Kitty” Subaru van as
he “raced” a yellow Citroen 2CV up one of the numerous
hills. While it appeared that Alex was just able to overtake
the ‘deux chevaux’, he did so in the left lane just as the
tour took a right turn. Consequently, he had to turn
around in order to catch up with the group!!
Paul has been
leading the Cit-
roen club and
hangers-on on
tours such as this
every year for a
few years now.
Hopefully, more of
our club members
will join us in the future as
the event brings out a lot
of interesting and unique
vehicles.

Our club meeting for March was
held on Tuesday 13th at a new loca-
tion, the self-styled “Country Club for
Gearheads” known as The Shop.
This operation, housed in an old
warehouse south of Seattle’s football
and baseball stadiums, provides a
great service to the local automotive
community in offering both storage
space and a full range of workshop
facilities to allow owners to work on -
and even restore - their cars.
It even includes an excellent res-
taurant and bar, The Derby, which despite a classic faux pas
on their special menu proved to be a great way to enjoy a
meal before a tour of the facilities. The amazing variety of
cars stored at The Shop can be
viewed through the restaurant/
bar windows, a tantalizing
glimpse of the treasures within.
We convened the club meet-
ing in a relatively open area of
The Shop near to some of its
car lifts and workshop bays.
After our usual review of past and future
activities and the officer reports, a nice
local connection surfaced in that our guide
to The Shop itself, Conrad, is the grand-
son of long-time NWARC members John
and Audriette Smith!
Conrad gave us
an overview of how
The Shop operates,
what facilities, tools
and advice it offers,
and what it costs.
The latter infor-
mation was mostly
academic for two reasons: (a) it’s more than
most of us can afford, and (b) they’re fully
booked! Conrad then led us on a tour of the
main storage area, commenting
on several of the cars and mo-
torcycles kept there. The range
was staggering, from an old
REO to a new Rolls Royce, a
Morgan three-wheeler, various
hot rods, two Dodge Vipers and
everything in between.
And while you may have heard
of big motorcycles being called
Hogs, you surely haven’t seen a
Moose bike before!

inspiration for Northwest gardeners.
After lunch it’s on to Elandan Gardens, a waterfront site on

your rooms at the Hotel RL soon; mention code NWAR0804 to
get the convention rate.
In the meantime, here’s a quick run-down of the schedule.
Please keep in mind that several items are still being finalized
and dates/times may change (a couple are already different
from the registration form in the Owner), but start thinking
about which events you want to attend. Sempreverde2018 is
going to be a packed week of Alfa Fun!
Sun/Mon/Tue Aug 5/6/7
Convention Pre-tours to the Ocean Beaches, Mt. Rainier
and Mt. St. Helens. Each day’s drive will begin and end at the
Hotel RL.
Wed Aug 8
AROC Board Meeting, open to all, 9:00 am - 1:00 pm.
Registration and the Vendor Room will open at 12:00 noon,
downstairs in the hotel Ballroom.
Enjoy the Alfa Art Show, beginning Wednesday afternoon.
Join us for a Welcome Reception on the lawn beginning at
6:00 pm that evening.
Thur Aug 9
Track Day! Time Trials in the morning, Parade Laps start
at 12:00 noon and a FunKhana begins at 1:00 pm. What’s a
FunKhana? Think of it as a gimmick autocross: a tight, twisty
course laid out with cones, but with several stopping points
where you have to get out and perform some task, such as
putting a letter in a mailbox, swinging a hula hoop, and so on.
If there are enough people interested the Go-Kart track will
be open in the morning. This is a great little track, laid out as a
replica of the full Ridge track itself!
The Tacoma Museum District bus tour has been moved up
from Friday to Thursday. The bus leaves the hotel at 12:00
noon and will return by 5:00 pm, with options to visit the
LeMay - America’s Car Museum, the Museum of Glass, The
Tacoma Art Museum or the Washington State History Muse-
um.
Fri Aug 10
The Gimmick Rally starts at 9:00 am and runs through the
beautiful countryside around Olympia. Expect to find treas-
ures you never expected!
After lunch the AROC Board Town Hall Q&A meeting starts
at 2:00 and will be followed by Wes Ingram and Herb
Sanborn’s engaging Tech Session on The Giulia GT’s Evolu-
tion, held in the parking lot.
The Car Wash for those prepping for the Concorso will go
on all afternoon, with Griot’s Garage putting on a demonstra-
tion using its own products from 4-5 pm. The evening wraps
up with the ever-popular Alfas in the Parking Lot tire-kicking
and socializing session, with an outdoor bar.
Sat Aug 11
The Concorso will be held from 8:00 am to noon at a park
just a few miles away from the hotel. With two categories,
judged and non-judged, everyone can take part. Someone we
know promises to have a special showing of unique Alfas. This
will be be a great show!
At 1:00 pm a panel of local notable collectors will share
their experiences and the pros and cons of collecting cars,
discussing The Wisdom of Collecting Alfas.
There will be a swap meet in the Hotel parking lot in the
afternoon, if interest is strong enough.
The official convention banquet will begin at 6:30 pm and
we promise it will be unlike any banquet you have ever attend-
ed. Our own Garth Stein (“The Art of Racing in the Rain”) will
be the keynote speaker and will sign books prior to the ban-
quet.
Sun Aug 12
The convention wraps up with the Arrivederci Awards Ban-
quet from 9:00 - 11:00 am, where winners of the weeks events
will be honored.
Throughout the week
We’re introducing a Cellphone Photography Contest with a
different challenge subject each day (The Track, Chrome, etc).
Entries must be uploaded to photos@sempreverde2018; there
will be a daily winner and an overall “photo of the week”.
This will be a full week of fun! We encourage all NWARC
members to attend and help host our convention.

Are any of you like me and find driving I-5 in the Seattle
region nearly impossible to avoid? And impossibly loud?
Even in our nice newer cars with suspension bushings that are
still compliant and vast amounts of sound insulation that hasn't
had to endure the ravages of age, it’s still a rather noisy drive
over those hard, well-worn and somewhat rutted concrete
roads.
But if you're driving some vintage machinery that has either
old, dried-out and now hard suspension bushings or those re-
ally firm polyurethane units to snub down your car’s handling,
well, those
parts are now
doing a nice job
of transferring
road noise into
the passenger
cabin. Add
the minimal
sound insula-
tion (cost sav-
ings) that may
have also de-
graded over
time (my car is
now 36 years
old), and those
concrete roads
like I-5 generate a roar
inside that is more than
annoying. It can add to
one's fatigue even after a
fun NWARC driving tour,
and generally degrade the
driving experience.
I decided to try and im-
prove my Alfa GTV6's situ-
ation by adding some new
sound insulation. I chose
a kind of rubberized/neo-
prene sticky-backed type
for the inside fenders and
firewall underneath the
carpet in the foot well ar-
ea. The sticky-backed stuff would be the way to go for all
those curved and upright areas in the car. This material was
also used for the transmission tunnel and inside rear fenders.
For the flat portion of the car's floor and below the back
seat I laid down (with spray-on contact cement) a fibrous type
of insulation. Both choices are foil-backed so it all looked sil-
ver and shiny before I hid it all underneath the carpet.
I wasn't ready to stop there and proceeded to clean the tire
side of the fenders. Once accomplished I painted a couple of
fresh coats of undercoating. On the GTV6 there is a cavity
behind a panel to the rear of the forward fender wells. I paint-
ed those as well as using an aerosol spray undercoating to
really get into the crevices in the area.
Oh yeah, one more area. Two-door cars have an empty
space ahead of the rear fenders below the rear side win-
dows. It's all bare sheet metal (=resonance chamber) that has
some exposure to the elements since the side windows re-
cede into that
space. I used a
combination of
painted-on and
spray-can under-
coating to cover
the surfaces and
deep recesses as
best I could.
The big test
came when I drove
my favorite Alfa to
work over that infa-
mous stretch of
Seattle's concrete
corridor. It worked!
Notably qui-
eter, and no
longer the
roar that I
used to
have to en-
dure. It's
not quiet
like a new
luxury se-
dan and
probably not
quiet to the
level of new
Giulias and
Stelvios. but
it’s a sub-
stantial improvement that I'm quite happy with. Yes, I likely
added another seven pounds to the car but it was more than
worth it to me. I highly recommend the insulation treatment to
those wishing for less road noise when out in their favorite Alfa
Romeo.

Alfa Romeo will be the Guest of Honor at the 90th
Anni-
versary of its first Mille Miglia victory.
The 2018 Mille Miglia will be held from 16 to 19 May on the
traditional Brescia-Rome-Brescia course. Alfa Romeo will at-
tend as both Automotive Sponsor and "guest of honor", as this
2018 event coin-
cides with the 90th
anniversary of its
first victory in the
legendary 1927-
1957 race.
The 1928
(second) race was
won by Giuseppe
Campari and Giu-
lio Ramponi in a
supercharged 6C
1500 Super Sport,
covering the 1,618
km course at an
average speed of
84 km/h. This was the first of Alfa Romeo's 11 Mille Miglia
victories, 7 of them in consecutive years from 1932 to 1938.
FCA Heritage is entering four historic Alfas – a 1928 6C
1500 SS, 1930 6C 1750 GS, 1956 1900 SS and 1954 1900
Sport Spider – and 30 new Giulias and Stelvios will serve as
official cars. On Saturday 19 May the Mille Miglia will visit
the Museo Storico Alfa Romeo for a time trial on the in-house
circuit at the Arese site.

Six 1960s Alfas discovered in abandoned castle
There’s a “barn find” – the term used for uncovering lost
priceless cars sitting in a garage covered in dust – and then
there’s a “castle find“. Six Alfa Romeo 1960s sports cars have
been discovered in the abandoned castle Kasteel van Heers, a
13th century castle east of Brussels. The protected monument
had been left to decay by its owners who struggled to maintain
the seat of their no-
ble ancestors. De-
spite years of ap-
peals, the Flemish
government seized
the castle and all its
contents from the
Desmaisières broth-
ers in 2007 for fail-
ing to carry out the repair work on the protected building.
Even after the
castle’s confisca-
tion, however, the
cars continued
gathering dust in
the basement for
at least another
five years, until
explorers stum-
bled upon them in
the darkness in 2012.
Among the cars was a prototype Alfa Romeo believed to
have been built by one of the brothers who owned the castle.
Michel Des-
maisières dab-
bled in racing in
the 1960s, and
archives show a
record of him
entering a race
with that proto-
type in 1964.
He lived in a
small part of the
derelict castle with his wife until 2007 when the castle was
seized. They reportedly had a buyer for the castle, but after
years of false promises the government repossessed it and its
contents to pay for restoration works. In 2015, the Alfas were
sold at auction for 117,000 euros.
As for the castle, res-
toration is slow but
steady. Kasteel van
Heers has its own web-
site for those that wish to
follow its progress. It
also pleads for explorers
to stop attempting to
break in hoping to find
the lost Alfas, unaware that they’ve all been removed and sold.
