Stewardship Update—April 30, 2014
As of the end of April, we thank the 193 families who have submitted stewardship cards pledging a to-tal of $221,684. Between now and the end of August, members of the Stewardship Committee will be reach-ing out to families in our community to ask for a stewardship commitment. In 2013, our stewardship total was a little over $374,000. We are confident that this community can commit $400,000 to our Cathedral; this is our goal. Remember as we reach out to you, that you decide the amount of your commitment based upon the gifts God has bestowed upon you and your family. There is no minimum level of commitment and your commitment is confidential. Spring has finally arrived and summer will soon follow. As we enjoy the beautiful weather and the wondrous nature, which surrounds us in Hampton Roads, let us remember to thank our Lord, Jesus Christ. We do this best by attending the Divine Liturgy on Sunday and partaking in Holy Communion. We all have travel plans during the summer, but when you are at home, plan on attending the Divine Liturgy. Your attendance will nourish your soul and sustain you.
“O LORD, how manifold are Your works! In wisdom You have made them all. The earth is full of Your possessions. This great and wide sea, in which are innumerable teeming things, living things both small and great. There the ships sail about…May the glory of the LORD endure forever; May the LORD rejoice in His works.” (Psalm 104: 24-31, NKJV).
“One thing I have desired of the LORD, that will I seek: that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the LORD…” (Psalm 27:4, NKJV).

PHILOPTOCHOS SOCIETY
Christos Anesti! As summer approaches, Philoptochos prepares for the 42nd Biennial Clergy-Laity Congress in Philadelphia, July 6-9. We plan to return w ith many new and innovative ideas to assist us in our philanthropic mission, and, at the same time, w e encourage the young w omen of our church to join our or-ganization to assist in serving those less fortunate. His Eminence Archbishop Demetrios stated, “ It is the duty of every w oman in the Greek community to become a member of Philoptochos.” We encourage all w ho are not members to seriously consider joining our Christian support group of w omen w ho care for one another and pray and w ork together tow ards a common goal. The rew ards can be great.
We thank all of you w ho visited our Agora during the festival, and we alw ays appreciate your contin-ued support each Sunday throughout the year. We started this tradit ion in 2000 as w ell as providing any needs for Makarias. These tw o sources provide the funds to help not only our parishioners needing assis-tance, but also the poor and indigent of Hampton Roads.
Our mother-daughter luncheon at Yanni’s Casual Greek Restaurant in May provided a w onderful op-portunity for our sisterhood to share in fellow ship and delicious food. We w ill have more of these special get-togethers later this year.
We w ish all of you a beautiful, restful summer, and may God guide you and your families safely in all your travels.
His Eminence Metropolitan Ev angelos wi th Fat her George, Presbytera Chrysan-thie, Anne Michals, and the Philoptochos board members.
Congratulations to our 2014 Scholarship recipients: Ev an Katsanos, Nick Moscopulos, Nicole Dixon, Andrew Mills, and Stephen Oliv encia. Nick Katsanos and Andrea Mills accepted f or Evan and Andrew.

The Robert E. Lee, Chapter 122, Order of AHEPA began the New Year by holding their f irst General
Meeting of 2014 on, January 9 at the A HEPA House. Dinner w as served at 6:30 p.m. w hich included: Braised Meat w ith Orzo, Baked Chicken & Potatoes, Greek salad, various Greek cookies, and the cutting of the Vasi-lopita Cake.
The General Meeting follow ed the dinner discussing the success of last year’s events: the Thanksgiv-
ing Luncheon in honor of the Golden Years Club; and the Annual Christmas Party. Over 60 seniors attended the Thanksgiving Luncheon and everyone enjoyed the tradit ional Thanksgiving feast. The Christmas Party was sold out w ith over 130 people in attendance. The attendees enjoyed the Prime Rib Dinner and later lis-tened to traditional Chr istmas songs and Greek music. Each attendee w as asked to bring an unwrapped toy for the Marines’ Toys-for-Tots Program. Over 200 toys w ere collected by tw o Marine Sergeants (husband and wife) that w ere in attendance.
During the end of December, at the Chapter’s Board Meeting, a motion w as passed by the board
members to share our blessings with those most in need. AHEPA National w as asking each Chapter to do-nate a minimum of $12 per member to feed the children of Greece. With approximately 120 paid members in our local Chapter the amount w e were asked to donate came out to $1,440. The Board unanimously passed a motion to raise the bar for the other Chapters by donating $2,000 to AHEPA National for the Feed the Chil-dren of Greece campaign. Also at the same Board Meeting the board members passed another motion to be-come a sponsor for the Mikrokosmos Concert by donating $500 to the Annunciation’s Cultural Committee.
During the month of February, the Robert E. Lee Chapter held its annual Super Bow l Party. Over 60
adults and kids attended the party and enjoyed an evening of good food, good company but unfortunately the game w as not even close as the Seatt le Seahaw ks demolished the Denver Broncos. On February 22, the Chapter held its Annual “Apokriatiko Glendi” (Masquerade Party). Over 100 “maskarathes” (people dressed in costumes) attended the evening’s festivities. Heavy appetizers were served and the dinner included chicken & potatoes, homemade Greek bread and Greek salad. Everyone enjoyed the costume contest and the danc-ing w ith live Greek music.
On March 3rd, the Chapter w as to f ly kites in the church parking lot to celebrate the f irst day of Lent
(Kathara Deftera). Unfortunately, and the second year in a row , the rainy w eather cancelled the event. At the March General Meeting, the Chapter enjoyed a Lenten Seafood Dinner. The meeting follow ed w ith the Ritual of Init iation. The Ceremony of Init iation is based on accurate historical information and is a signif icant ritual. It contains an important message, intended to remind all Brothers, as w ell as to instruct new Candidates, about the essential purpose of AHEPA. The tw o new candidates that w ere initiated w ere: Mr. John Vastardis and Mr. George Dimas. Throughout the month of March, the Chapter continued to support our church by donating the w ine for the Luncheon for His Eminence Metropolitan Evangelos of New Jersey, donated funds for the Annunciation’s March 25th Feastday Celebration and sponsored the 3rd Salutations to the Theotokos Friday Service by providing the food.
On a beautiful and sunny morning on Saturday, April 5th, seventeen AHEPAn brothers along w ith the
Rev. Fr. George Bessinas and tw o representatives from the City of Norfolk’s Bureau of Cemeter ies, met at the “Old Greek” section of Forest Lawn Cemetery off Granby Street to pay tribute to their departed fraternal brothers, families, and church parishioners. The mission and the obligation of the Chapter w ere to clean and remove the dirt, algae, lichen, and fungi from gravestone markers. Armed w ith buckets, gloves, scrapers and brushes it took approximately 4 hours to complete the task. Chairman of the Project, Nick Harrison, stated: “As attested by all my brothers of the Robert E. Lee, Chapter of AHEPA, and myself, this sense of duty w as the most self-gratifying and rew arding project that our Chapter has ever performed.”
