“Heartbeat has helped us a lot because we have support groups that helps us to understand the

different situations that we find ourselves in. We know that with some of us it is difficult to accept our

situations because we see that our neighbors live a healthy and wealthy lifestyles and yet some of us

are poor. Heartbeat has since brought light in our lives; we can now express our feelings through

support groups, acting and singing. That has also helped us to identify the different talents that we

have as kids.” Katlehong high school pupil

A message from the Chairman Dr Jaco Van der Walt

In our annual strategic review we decided, after wide

consultation with stakeholders, to shift our focus:

It was felt that our model is now very robust and well

documented and that we are at the point where we have to

decide how we are going to make a significant difference in

caring for Orphans and Vulnerable children. To achieve this,

we have to start multiplying our efforts. It is very time and

labour intensive for any one NGO to run a project in a

community.

We decided to focus on training and empowerment. The

ground work for this leg of our operations has been built over

the last 3 to 4 years with the development and accreditation of

our training material and establishment of our mentorship and

internship programmes.

A network of learning centres will be established throughout

the country, one in each province.. At these centres

Heartbeat will be implementing our model by ways of a best

practice project, with students and organisations from

surrounding communities receiving training in all aspects of

our model. These students will receive skills to start and run

their own projects in their communities, with mentoring and

monitoring support from the learning centre. The learning

centre will also do quality control and assurance of the new

incumbents.

We also identified the need to assist community members in

obtaining child care grants from government, as this will

decrease the pressure on the NGO sector to provide material

needs significantly. Heartbeat will develop a program for

grandparents to reach more children with quality care through

this traditional support system.

I am stepping down as chairman, handing the reins to Dr

Sunette Pienaar that will henceforth act as executive

chairperson, pending approval on the AGM. I will still serve as

a board member and look forward to making a contribution in

this capacity.

It has been an amazing experience to be involved in the birth,

childhood and maturation of Heartbeat. I want to express my

heartfelt gratitude to countless people that have been

selflessly involved over the years. In a climate of negativity,

sinicism and sometimes despair that engulfs our country, my

involvement with Heartbeat has, time and again , made me

acutely aware of the store of kindness, goodwill and hope that

is still very much alive in the people of SA.

May Heartbeat be instrumental in bringing hope and light to

thousands of children in the coming year!

Dr Jaco Van der Walt

Chairperson

In the 2006/7 financial year Heartbeat has provided a package

of services to 3500 number orphaned and vulnerable children.

We have also scaled up on the Tswelopele Training- and

Mentoring Programme, empowering 36 organisations and

projects to deliver the Heartbeat package of services to 4500

number of OVCs in their communities.

South Africa will have approximately 3 million OVCs by 2010 as

the HIV/AIDS epidemic continues to ravage our communities,

destroying the very core of our society, namely the family.

Families are redefined in the face of this calamity and child-

headed households as a family unit is on the increase as

grandparents lose the battle for survival. Heartbeat responded

to this increase in numbers of OVCs and has set a bold

strategic target to reach 50 000 children within the next 3

years. Both Murray & Roberts as well as Accenture are

throwing their weight behind Heartbeat to develop an effective

implementation vehicle.

Despite our increased efforts to reach larger numbers of

children with better quality services and programmes, the

challenges remain. No one organisation has the capacity and

skills to address all the issues faced by orphaned and

vulnerable children, a principle Heartbeat adopted early on in

its programming. Multi-sectoral and other development

partnerships prove to be increasingly efficient in delivering a

range of services to vulnerable populations. Consequently,

Heartbeat forged partnerships with government and business.

More recently Heartbeat has actively engaged civil society to

deliver on supply chains to OVCs. One such a supply chain

Heartbeat has built is to promote educational provision to

OVCs.

This educational supply chain ensures that children are

registered early on with pre-schools; that they receive

assistance with homework and additional lessons in

mathematics, science and English in primary and secondary

school and that they have the access to post-secondary

education and skills development.

In 2007, Heartbeat entered into a partnership with an Early

Childhood Development Organisation ECD Projects to offer

quality early childhood development programmes to pre-

school OVCs. In the past, Heartbeat OVCs were

accommodated in community crèches with little emotional

and intellectual stimulation. According to the Guidelines of the

Department of Social Development, early childhood

development services should be holistic and should

appreciate the importance of considering the child's health,

nutrition, education and psychosocial needs within the context

of family and the community. Proper pre-school education is

essential in order to bring children into the education system

and to make sure that they succeed once they are there. The

necessary skills must be developed at an early age to enable

children to learn, to improve literacy levels and ultimately

reduce crime and unemployment in the longer term.

This partnership empowers unskilled caregivers to provide

comprehensive school readiness programmes for OVCs

between the ages of 3 and 6 years enabling a successful

education and advance future employment possibilities. The

programme also provides the caregivers with business

management skills required to secure better opportunities for

the sustainable small businesses, and creates employment

within communities. Heartbeat's partnership with ECD projects

is currently piloted in Katlehong and has already made a huge

difference in the lives of the little ones, their caregivers, the

pre-school teachers and the community as a whole.

Once the children reach primary school level, they are

assisted with homework at the after school centres by

educators. Heartbeat has entered into a partnership with, The

Tomorrow Trust. This organisation hosts holiday schools for

children in grade 1-3 and grade 10 -12, enforcing the

curriculum and preparing them for exams. The Tomorrow Trust

also assists with the assessment of matriculants and the

placements of youth for post-secondary opportunities.

Through Heartbeat 33 youth have already been placed as part

of this programme.

The Heartbeat educational supply chain is an example of

quality service delivery through partnerships. Heartbeat hopes

to develop similar supply chains to promote issues such as

health, psychosocial support and material support.

Heartbeat is also very excited about our partnership with

Proudly South African. Together we hope to spread the

message that collective action can effectively address dire

issues.

Finally, and with the generous support of Murray & Roberts,

Heartbeat has established a Research and Development

Management Function. The Heartbeat model was

documented and has been evaluated by all stakeholders. This

report, funded by the Rockefellers Brother's Fund, will inform

further research and guide Heartbeat's programming and

partnerships.

I wish to thank the management team, the support staff at

Head Office and the site staff for their commitment and

passion. Without Heartbeat's corporate and government

partnerships, we would never have achieved our planned

objectives. I wish to thank the numerous friends of Heartbeat,

spread all over the world; the most recent being “Go Ahead”,

a German based educational programme run by the youth to

give our children a chance for a future through education. I

salute the children of our country for their perseverance

beyond all odds. You make us proud to be South African.

with her husband and her two sons.

Busiswa Nongogo has been working in the marketing environment for the past 10 years

and has extensive marketing experience. Busiswa initially worked with the major sports

rights holders in the country, like the National Olympic Committee of South Africa, the

7th All Africa Games, 2004 Cape Town Bid, Basketball South Africa, and Volleyball South

Africa. For the past 5 years she has worked in the NGO field focusing on Health and

Development issues. She was employed by Soul City Institute for Health and

Development as the Marketing Coordinator, and later promoted to be the Brand

Manager for Soul Buddyz, a children's mass media programme that targets 8 to 12 year

olds together with their parents. In April 2007 she joined the Heartbeat family as

Marketing Manager. Her focus areas are Fundraising, Branding, Events Management

and Communications. She has a Marketing Management diploma and is currently

completing her BCom Marketing degree.

Nelisa is originally from the Eastern Cape and she completed her primary and tertiary

education in the Eastern Cape. After graduating from college, she joined Daimler

Chrysler SA in East London as an intern in their HR and Training Department. After

completing her internship she relocated to Gauteng and worked for various companies,

local and International as an HR Generalist. She decided to emigrate, but fortunately saw

an opportunity to work within Heartbeat. Everything changed since then. She has been

working for Heartbeat since March 07 and has not looked back since. She believes that

she will be working with Heartbeat for a long time, as she finds it a very fulfilling career.

SACIN programme is open to any

individual who would like to support

Heartbeat's children by making a

monthly contribution for a minimum

period of a year. This programme started

in 2001. To date, 1040 children have

been sponsored via this vehicle. Yet,

close to 3500 children on our database

do not enjoy this sponsorship. We are

making an appeal to interested people

to help us reach all the children on our

database.

Heartbeat's long-term objective is to

reach over 50 000 children by 2010. This

is a call to all proudly South Africans to

work with us to achieve this goal. The

number of orphans is escalating by the

day, and they urgently need projects

such as Heartbeat to support them.

Our greatest thanks to the individuals,

church organisations and company

employees that have contributed and

made a difference in these children's

lives. Without you, it would not be

possible to deliver the best “orphan

care” model. Our children, the “angels”

of Heartbeat, are proud of you,

Lerato,

Please pass the following message to Peter the child I am sponsoring.

Dear Peter,

I haven't really been in contact with you since I started sponsoring you,

please accept my apology for that and I will make it a point that I

communicate with you more often like I do with all my loved ones.

I would really like to know how you are doing, any problems that you

encounter at school, home and generally in life I am here to listen and will

give you all the support I can. I have one request for you though and in

return for that one favour I will let you choose any Christmas gift you want.

The request is as follows:

I am God fearing man and therefore, my heart would be pleased if you

asked you Grandmother if it would be ok for you to go to Church if you are

currently not doing so and go especially to Sunday school to learn the

important basics of living a good life so that one day when you're a grown up

you can teach your children the same thing. Will you do that for me my Boy?

If you do I will buy you any Christmas gift that your heart desires this year

ok!.

Be a good boy now and take care of your grandmother for me will you!

With lots of love

Heartbeat and the Oaktree Foundation have now worked

together in the establishment of the Emthonjeni Resource

Centre for eighteen months. Oaktree's financial support has

partially funded the construction of the building, and has more

recently supported staff costs, administration, relief programs

and the provision of key resources. Heartbeat has consistently

provided updates on the project and its participants, which

provided the basis of Oaktree's most recent Heartbeat-related

initiative.

In the first six months of 2007, one of the Oaktree state-level

teams undertook an awareness and fundraising campaign

wholly centred on Heartbeat. The updates – supported by

Heartbeat – helped to explain the challenges and processes

involved in development. More importantly, some of the

personal stories and photos of the completed Emthonjeni

Resource Centre helped our supporters to better understand

and appreciate the importance of Heartbeat's work, and

similar work throughout the world. We are very grateful to

Heartbeat for providing these resources, and look forward to

continuing to work with them to build the capacity of orphaned

and vulnerable children; and to strengthen the capacity of the

caregivers to care for, protect and support these all-important

members of their community.

Dr Chene Swart interviewing children

Heartbeat has really changed my life a lot you know because now I don't really have to stress myself about what am I going

to eat at home what am I going to wear at school, then I see a great future for myself

(Wedela high school pupil).

Heartbeat is our godmother because we get everything

(Tembisa high school pupil).

Heartbeat helps us because when my mother passed away, our

neighbours thought that we will never eat anymore but

because Heartbeat helped us they became shocked when

they saw us coming from Heartbeat with plastic bags carrying

our food parcel

(At teridgeville high school pupil).

As long as there is Heartbeat I won't be hungry

(Vosloorus primary school pupil).

Now Heartbeat has brought me books, shoes, stuff like that even

food at home. Now I can think thoroughly that I know I'm going to

finish school and then I'll be someone very successful in life

because Heartbeat has gave taught me how to respect, how to treat

other people and how to behave so that you can be wealthy in life

(Pieter Swart high school pupil).

Heartbeat has made my education their first priority like they sponsor me

with stationary and all those things, I don't feel like an orphan I look like

other children at school, I do things they do I act like them I don't look,

until I told them I'm also an orphan they don't believe me that I'm orphan

also, so I don't act or look like an orphan so they sponsor me too much

(Vosloorus high school pupil).

But when I found Heartbeat it was like the dark doors were opened for me. Everything just went right, at school they say now

you are wearing toughfees (a kind of school shoe), you're wearing buccaneer and now you can buy clothes. You see now

I'm different I'm like them they are even playing with me; oh you have lunch today why, who is providing you with this? All this

thing I can say Heartbeat is my everything, I've lost so many things and Heartbeat gave it back to me, I'm really glad to

have it

(Katlehong high school pupil).
