REPORT of the SUPERINTENDENT of SCHOOLS
To the School Board and Citizens of Rollinsford
:
I am very happy to report to the citizens of
Rollinsford that it is my considered judgment that
Rollmsford has a good school. The teaching staff
that is working with our youngsters is a very com-petent one. They are concientious, cooperative,
hard working, and truly professional people. Thesound leadership of the Principal, Mr. Hatfield, is
evident. The building itself is always kept neat andclean. A business-like atmosphere is always present
in the classrooms. The children all seem to be in-
volved in activities and busy whenever I have ap-
peared at the school. Problems have been at a mini-
mum and, when they have occurred, have beensolved with a minimum of conflict for both the pupil
and the teachers.
The focus as regards the total program has
been on the fundamentals; reading, writing, andarithmetic. This is as it should be. I firmly believe
53
that our youngsters must have this fundamentalbackground if they are to successfully compete with
others whatever their ultimate goals may be.
To insure that this type of school be main-.tained, I have advised the Board that a re-evaluation
of the salary policy is mandatory. We all know that
the critical element in any school is the teaching
staff. Without good teachers it is impossible to have
a sound school which will insure that the pupil will
receive that kind of education that he must havein our complex society. Generally, there are three
things that hold good teachers and permit the Super-
intendent to recruit good candidates ; they are
:
a. Working conditions.
b. Living conditions.
c. The pay received by teachers.
I believe that Rollinsford meets the first twoconditions very well. It is my hope that the citizens
of Rollinsford, through their elected representatives
on the School Board, will do everything possible to
maintain a salary policy that will allow us to hold
our good teachers.
Budgetary provisions have been made to con-
tinue the policy of keeping up to date and replacing
worn out books and instructional aids. With inflated
prices and larger enrollments the citizens must ex-
pect increases in the budget for these items. Whileit is possible to keep per pupil costs relatively stable,
the total expenditure for school purposes will in-
crease as long as we have more children to educate.
Various details and given areas of the school
are covered in the Report of the Principal; I refer
the reader to this section of the report. If we haveleft any questions unanswered, we welcome a visit
54
from the parents or citizens at any time and will be
more than happy to give answers to any questions
that you may have.
The School Board has conscientiously carried
out their responsibility as the policy making body
for the Rollinsford School. I thank them for the
manner in which they have worked with Mr. Hat-
field and myself. Their entire approach to the edu-
cational enterpise is commendable.
Respectfully submitted,

steady increase until a peak enrollment of 211 has
been reached. At present date the enrollment stands

Faculty
During the past year, it became apparent that
at the close of the year in June we were to be faced
with several problems regarding the faculty of the
school.
Mr. William Avery, Jr., who had been theteacher of the combined fifth and sixth grades, pre-
sented his resignation to the Board. His successor
was chosen from a number of applicants because of
her excellent capabilities in the field of Education.
Mrs. Elizabeth Thompson is now doing an excellent
job of instruction in grade 5.
The number of pupils that would have been in
a combined fifth and sixth grade (52) made it abso-
lutely necessary to split the grades and to hire anadditional teacher to handle a straight sixth grade.
We were fortunate to have obtained the services as
teacher of English and Social Studies in this grade,
Miss Mary I. Floden. Although Miss Floden has hadno previous experience, other than practice teach-
ing, she is doing an extremely capable job of teach-
ing these subjects.
The resignation of Mr. Edwin Chamberlain be-
came effective with the close of school in June, 1957.
This necessitated the hiring of a teacher for the
Science and Mathematics section of the upper
grades. Mrs. Eleanor Milliken of Dover, N. H., wasselected because of her excellent background of pre-
paration and previous teaching success. It is felt
that this choice was a most fortunate one both for
the School Board as well as for the pupils of the
school.
Mrs. Ruth Brown, present supervisor of Music
in South Berwick, Maine, was selected to fill the va-
cancy caused by the dual resignation of Mr. and
58
Mrs. William Elwell. Mrs. Brown came to us withan excellent background of preparation for teach-
ing as well as an impressive history of successful
teaching assignments in other schools and systems.
The remainder of the faculty is as it has beenin the previous year. Reference to the Faculty DataTable shows the grade teaching assignment of each.
It is as follows

It is felt that this faculty is the strongest-educa-
tionally, and the most pleasing, personality-wise,
that this school has had during its many years. It
is hoped that the School Board and the Town will
make every effort to retain this faculty as a whole.
Staff
During this past year, we have had two mem-bers retire from service at the school. Mr. EdwardBureau, who was custodian of the building for a
number of years, and his wife Mrs. Margaret
Bureau, who has been the school cook and dietician
for a long period of time, have now retired and are
enjoying a well-deserved rest.
Their places have been filled by Mr. Willis
Lane, who is serving most efficiently as the custodian
of the building and as the assistant cook, and by Mrs.
Barbara Wilson who is capably serving as the cook-
Dietician in the cafeteria.
Plant
The changes that have previously been mention-
ed among the members of the faculty have neces-
sitated changes in the room arrangements of the
school. It has been necessary to convert the roomthat has been used as a lunch room into a classroom.
This room is now serving as the Social Studies andthe English Classroom.
The Lunchroom has been combined with andcondensed into the kitchen. This arrangement is
anything but ideal, but is working as well as can
be expected.
Grade three has been completely redecorated.
The ceiling and the walls have been completely
painted for the first time since the school has beenbuilt. With a new tile floor this room now has the
appearance of a most attractive classroom.
61
The boys' and girls' toilets on the lower floor
have been rebuilt to include increased facilities de-
manded by the large student population that is to
be found on that floor.
The windows of grades seven and eight havebeen completely weatherstripped with a resulting
saving of fuel and increased comfort within the
rooms.
In general, the physical condition of the build-
ing is excellent because of the wise policy of main-tenance followed by the Board.
Lunch Program
The lunch program has undergone two majorchanges. Our new cook-dietician, Mrs. Barbara Wil-
son, is providing good, wholesome, well-balanced
meals, and, with the assistance of Mr. Willis Lane,
is serving approximately 115 full meals per day that
conform to the requirements of the State Dept. of
Education.
The following is a summary of the lunch pro-
gram:

Instruction
Because of the limitation of physical space, it
has been necessary to abandon completely the teach-
ing- of two subjects. These two are : Manual Train-
ing- for boys and Home Economics for the girls. TheShop space that was formerly used for manual train-
ing is now occupied by Grade three. The space that
was used by the home economics group is now being
used as a lunch room.
The changes that have been noted in the Facul-
ty of the School have been most welcome and, as has
been mentioned, have strengthened the instruction
of the students in many ways.
The quality of the instruction that is being car-
ried on in the Rollinsford Grade School is on a muchhigher plane than in previous years. In general, the
curriculum as outlined by the State Dept. is being
adhered to.

Acknowledgements
I wish to take this opportunity to thank the
people of the Town of Rollinsford for their interest
in their school as shown by their attendance at the
Annual Open House that was held at the school
during American Education Week. Their continued
interest has been shown, and is much appreciated bythe members of the faculty, by the number of par-
ental visits to the school while it has been in session.
Thanks are to be expressed, also, to the Martel-
Roberge Post American Legion for its continued in-
terest in the students of the school, for their presen-
tation of medals and scrolls to the outstanding stu-
dents in recognition of their achievements, and for
the Post's gift of ice cream for the members of the
entire school during their Christmas Party.
Thanks are due again to Mr. Fred L. Green for
his continued interest in the school and his contin-
uing gifts of display material and show cases.

most welcome loan of exhibits that have contributed
to the learning experiences of the students.
Conclusion
In conclusion, let me offer the thanks and ap-
preciation of the faculty and the staff of the Rollins-
ford Grade School, to the Superintendent, the mem-bers of the School Board, and the Citizens of the
Town of Rollinsford for their help and understand-
ing in making this school the kind that serves a
community well.
