LETTER FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Dear Friend,

Several years ago one of our Club alumna gave me a notecard with a poem from E.E. Cummings. It said “we do not believe in ourselves until someone reveals that deep inside us something is valuable, worth listening to, worthy of our trust...” I still have this card on my desk, a reminder of the importance of our work and the impact we can have on the children we serve.

Your investments in our organization this past year provided many opportunities for us to value our young people, regardless of their family situation or financial status. I see demonstrations of this every day when I walk through our facility. Quiet moments when a staff member offers a kind word, recognizes an accomplishment, or provides guidance. Powerful moments when a child performs on our stage and receives applause from the audience. Empowering moments when a group of middle school teens work together on drug and alcohol misuse prevention efforts, mentored by several high school students.

The Club’s guiding mission is to enable all young people, especially those who need us most, to be great today and reach their full potential as productive, caring, responsible citizens tomorrow. Our goal is to change children’s lives for the better. On behalf of our members and their families, thank you for valuing our children and investing in their futures.

Dear Supporter,

Thank you for your generous support this past year. For the Boys & Girls Club of Souhegan Valley it has been a year of growth and advancement. With the support of friends like you, over the past year we made tremendous strides in our ability to reach more young people and have even greater impact in their lives.

In our community too many children are at risk and vulnerable; they lack adult guidance and positive role models and may live in families that are increasingly stressed financially or due to alcohol or drug misuse. The need to serve more young people, especially those who need us most, is clear and motivated action by the Board of Directors and staff of the Boys & Girls Club of Souhegan Valley.

Early in the year we launched our “building for the future” capital campaign to raise funds to expand our facility with a new gym and teen center. By March we broke ground, and opened the expanded facility in late October. The children are loving every minute of their time in our new spaces. Our members are participating in exercise on a consistent basis, laughing, talking, and playing sports, all while being mentored by our incredible staff.

Our goal with this expansion is to implement sports programming to recruit more members, retain more of our middle school members into high school, and attract additional teens into our programs. The additional space will also allow us to enhance our arts programming by increasing rehearsal space and adding a music room to our existing facility, and improve our academic programs by creating a dedicated academic center for homework and academic enrichments.

None of this work, none of the impact that our Club has on the children we serve, could be accomplished without your support.

FINANCIAL STANDINIG SEPTEMBER 2015 - AUGUST 2016 (UNAUDITED)

2016 was an exciting year of growth and innovation worth celebrating for the Boys & Girls Club of Souhegan Valley. This year’s income from programming and fundraising was a total of $3,425,000. In addition to the $965,000 brought in by programs, the Club raised $2,460,000 for expansion, new programs, and equipment. Donations from individuals, businesses, and foundations increased by more than $1.2 million due in large part to the organization’s capital campaign to expand its facility with a new gym and teen center, as well as investments in a new van, sound and lighting improvements in our theater, and investments in our academic endowment and general endowments.

Thanks to our supporters, the Club distributed more than $130,000 in need-based scholarship support so that all children, regardless of their ability to pay, could attend programs. This increase in support for scholarships has allowed the Club to meet a growing need; over the past five years our scholarship assistance has grown from $31,000 in 2012 to $130,000 in 2016. The additional support has allowed more children to attend our programs and existing members to participate in additional activities, as well as attend more frequently.

For the fiscal year ending August 31, 2016, the Boys and Girls Club of Souhegan Valley’s operating expenses totaled over $1.5 million dollars, staying in close alignment with 2015. Program revenues increased slightly in dollars but decreased as a percentage of total revenue due to the significant increase in donations to support our capital campaign.

The Management Team at the Boys & Girls Club of Souhegan Valley continues to maintain a responsible and cost effective fiscal policy when it comes to spending, ever mindful of our mission to meet the needs of our members. Our ability to continue this work is directly due to the investment, generosity and support we have received from you, our supporters. Because of your investments, the Club is poised to serve more children and have even more impact on their lives. Our sincere thanks and gratitude goes out to each of you.

2016-2017 Q1 UPDATE

· To start off the fiscal year, the Club was voted by readers of the Milford Cabinet as the Best Club/Service Organization of the Souhegan Valley. · We officially opened our new gym on October 26th with our “kid” ribbon cutting, followed by a public ribbon cutting on October 27th. · On October 29th we hosted our first Community Celebration event, bringing together over 20 agencies that serve youth and family for a free family friendly event. · We produced our 100th show with the Riverbend Youth Company’s production of West Side Story.· We hired our new Athletic Director and began hosting new programs in our Gym. · Our CAST committee (Community Action for Safe Teens) worked with local schools to start 3 SADD (Students against Destructive Decisions) groups. · We collaborated with SHARE to add a part-time staff member to coordinate services for our mutual clients, improving services for our most at risk members.

A 2016 Milford High School graduate and Boys & Girls Club of Souhegan Valley member since 4th grade, Marrissa now attends St. Lawrence University. In addition to participating in Club programs, she has been an active volunteer and youth counselor at the Club while also a member of the National Honor Society, We the People team, and the varsity softball team. Marissa is an excellent role model for the youth we serve. She is dedicated to making smart and healthy choices, and passionate about justice and equality.

Chuck Barker was named our volunteer of the year because of his commitment to helping our members reach their full potential. Chuck is a favorite in our homework program; children seek him out because of his patience and ability to present math concepts in unique ways. In addition, Chuck is our resident "Mad Scientist" bringing science to life for our members. Thank you, Chuck, for making learning fun for so many children in our community, your service will have impact for generations to come!

2016 CIVIC AWARD: CIARDELLI FUEL

Ciardelli Fuel has supported the Boys & Girls Club of Souhegan Valley for over a decade. Ciardelli Fuel is a regular sponsor of our Charity Golf Classic as well annual auction fundraiser. They were also one of the first companies to commit to support our Club's expansion with the purchase of $100,000 in tax credits. Ciardelli Fuel has had a tremendous impact on our organization and we appreciate the opportunity to recognize them for their commitment to the youth in our community.

Milford Middle School 8th Grader Abby Forrence was named Community Champion in recognition of her work to improve the health of young people as the Fuel Up to Play 60 Ambassador.
