Outcomes 38 families were referred and invited onto a course/camp in 2012. 21 men and 22 boys attended. (13 men were the child’s dads, 4 were stepdads and 4 were uncles). 27 friends and family attended the reunion camp BBQ. 9 men & boys attended the general reunion. 2 families received ongoing support. 7 referrers responded to requests for feedback The statistics above highlight the challenges faced when engaging with disengaged/disadvantaged families. 55% of families who were referred and agreed to take part in a course or camp actually attended. On many occasions families either just didn’t turn up, or decided at the very last moment not to take part. It is therefore important to oversubscribe places and contact the family regularly prior to the event to try and build a rapport. I’ve highlighted below, a few comments received from feedback questionnaires: When asked about the course, the men said; ‘We got on brilliantly. Best 5 weeks I've had with him’ ‘This course has been great for me and my nephew. We have moved to another level’ ‘The whole experience will stay with us forever’ When asked about the course, the boys said; ‘Enjoyed it much more than a game on a console. Would rather do this everyday than game’ ’It was fun. Builds up team work’ ‘It was amazingly awesome’ When asked about what they had achieved, the men said; ‘To have fun and gain more confidence’ ‘Stronger bond with my son’ ‘We have found a new activity we can do together’ When asked about what they had achieved, the boys said; ‘Improve with my dad’

‘It  was  fun  and  it  made  the  bond  between  me  and  (step-‐dad)  stronger’  ’Spending  more  time  with  my  uncle’

 When  asked  about  the  impact  M&B  has  had  on  the  child,  the  referrers  said;

‘Child’  was  very  positive,  excited  and  keen  to  share  his  experiences  of  the  Man  and  Boy  course,  which  is  not  something  he  generally  does  with  other  things  in  school.  He  also  brought  the  photos  in  and  was  keen  to  share  them  with  his  class.  I  therefore  feel  it  is  fair  to  say  that  the  experience  had  a  positive  impact  on  ‘child’,  which  I  hope  will  support  him  in  the  future.  –Teacher    ‘On  my  recent  visit  to  review  the  families’  needs  the  father  expressed  his  enjoyment  in  attending  the  climbing.    The  father  feels  it  has  increased  his  bond  with  his  son  and  has  enabled  the  two  of  them  to  be  more  active  together.  This  has  also  appeared  to  have  given  them  both  the  confidence  to  be  more  social  and  I  am  aware  that  they  have  been  in  contact  with  other  attendees  to  arrange  to  meet  regularly. This  has  also  impacted  on  the  other  family  members  whereby  it  has  allowed  mum  to  spend  some  quality  time  with  her  other  children  and  both  parents  have  felt  their  son’s  behaviour  has  calmed  down  which  has  had  a  positive  impact  on  the  whole  family.  They  are  now  looking  into  attending  the  family  camping  weekend  which  I  no  doubt  will  have  a  positive  outcome’.  –  Family  Support  Worker    ‘He  said  that  one  of  the  best  things  was  being  encouraged  by  his  Dad  and  succeeding  together’.  –  Special  Educational  Needs  Coordinator  (SENCO)

Kingston  Family  Learning  Award  -‐  On  24  May  2012  a  family  who  had  attended  M&B  camp  and  course  were  awarded  with  the  Kingston  Family  Learning  achievement  award.  The  citation  read:  ‘For  building  a  strong  and  positive  relationship  within  the  family  and  outstanding  achievement  in  Man  and  Boy  activities’.

Development

Kingston  –  Kingston  Family  Learning  remain  a  committed  partner  with  Man  &  Boy  and  this  is  a  mutually  beneficial  arrangement.  KFL  match  fund  schools  that  refer  pupils  on  pupil  premium.  Several  schools  agreed  to  fund  pupils  attending  the  most  recent  relationship  building  course  held  in  November  2012.    Relationships  have  been  made  with  several  more  local  schools,  including  St.  Philips,  Southborough  Boys,  Coombe  Boys,  St  Agatha’s,  Ellingham  and  St  Lukes  as  well  as  the  Safeguarding  Team  (social  workers)  at  Kingston.    Other  Areas  –  Contact  has  been  made  with  other  local  areas  using  personal  networks.    Family  Learning  managers  were  approached  in  Sutton,  Richmond  and  Hounslow.  After  an  initial  meeting  with  Sutton  Police,  Sutton  Borough  Community  Safety  Unit  has  agreed  to  a  pilot  project  in  2013  and  it  is  likely  that  M&B  will  run  1  course  and  1  camp.    North  East  Surrey  Education  Department  met  members  of  the  M&B  team  before  Christmas  to  discuss  the  possibilities  of  introducing  the  project  into  one  of  their  3  boroughs;  Epsom,  Elbridge  or  Spelthorne.      Website  –  Thanks  to  Premm-‐Design,  the  Man  &  Boy  logo  and  website  were  created  and  went  live  in  August  2012.  The  website  continues  to  be  developed  and  most  recently  an  on-‐line  application  form  has  been  added  enabling  other  boroughs  to  select  and  apply  for  courses  in  their  areas.    Brand  –  Business  cards  and  team  clothing,  including  ‘T’-‐shirts  and  fleeces  have  been  designed  and  purchased.  Information  leaflets  for  local  authorities,  referrers  and  participants  are  being  worked  on  and  will  be  produced  in  early  2013.    Research  –  Measurement  of  success  is  largely  taken  from  a  simple  feedback  questionnaire  and  comments  from  referrers.  In  order  to  develop  a  relevant  set  of  measureable  outcomes,  M&B  met  with  Dr  Sylvie  Mayo-‐Collins  (Head  of  Sociology,  Kingston  Univ)  to  discuss  the  way  forward.  Sylvie  is  keen  to  undertake  a  research

project  in  2013  looking  at  the  M&B  results  to  date  and  from  this  make  recommendations  for  possible  measurements  in  the  future.  M  &  B  will  be  looking  for  funding  to  support  this  work.    Patrons  –  A  number  of  high  profile  people  have  been  suggested  as  potential  patrons.  Dame  Susan  Kramer  has  agreed  to  become  a  patron.    Funding  –  Below  is  a  breakdown  of  funding  received.  PDT  UK  -‐  £18,600  Sport  Relief  -‐  £10,196  Local  Authority  Grant  -‐  £618  Your  Money,  You  Decide  -‐  £1,600  Schools  –  £239  Kingston  Family  Learning  –  £1,125  Cash  Donation  £55    Advisory  Team  –This  team  provide  strategic  oversight,  advice,  management  and  support  for  the  project  and  consists  of  Robert  Westlake,  John  Buckeridge,  Deborah  Quy  and  Justin  Cooper  and  met  quarterly  during  the  first  year.    Operational  Team  –  The  team  consists  of  5  people;  Trevor  Quy,  Neil  Beckett,  Alan  Newbury,  John  Trend  and  Tim  Isterling  and  they  have  made  an  enormous  contribution  to  the  on-‐going  development  of  the  courses  and  camps.  M&B  also  included  a  past  participant,  who  has  asked  to  become  a  volunteer,  at  a  recent  ‘pitch’  with  Sutton  local  authority.

FUTURE  PLANS

Team  Expansion  –  With  the  additional  commitment  of  providing  M&B  to  Sutton  in  2013,  the  team  will  need  to  grow.  M&B  will  look  to  develop  a  volunteer  base  to  support  the  camps  as  well  as  utilising  volunteer’s  skills  in  other  areas,  such  as  multi-‐media,  fund  raising,  etc.  It  is  good  to  note  that  just  through  M&B  networks  a  number  of  men  have  come  forward  to  offer  themselves  as  volunteers.  A  list  of  people  is  being  collated  and  they  will  be  contacted  once  the  volunteering  programme  has  been  thought  through.    Governance  –  M&B  met  with  Kingston  Voluntary  Action  (KVA)  in  November  2012  to  obtain  advice  on  the  most  appropriate  governance  model  and  although  M&B  remains  an  associate  project  within  OxygenYFC,  the  intention  is  now  to  begin  the  process  to  become  independent  of  Oxygen.  The  most  likely  model  is  an  Incorporated  Association.
