THE

SEVENTY-SIXTH REPORT OF

}'OR THE YEAR ENDING

30th SEPTEMBER, 1894.

From a desire to meet the earnest requests of friends for increased supplies of the Society's publications, the previous year closed with a considerable debt. -Through diminished work and more liberal contributions the deficit has been partly met, while measures have been adopted which will render the work more self-supporting in future. rfhough a decline compared with the previous year, the number of publications printed was 1,507,050 j the circulation amounted to 1,646,048.

THE YEAR'S PUBLICATIONS.

During the period under review, 72 different publications were issued in four languages. Of these, 25 were new, and the remainder reprints. They included 21 in Tamil, 19 in Telugu, 21 in Malayalam, and 10 in English. The new publications will be bt'iefly noticed.

I. TAMIL.

The number of publications in this language was 21, of which 4 were new. The number printed was 1,006,100.

TRACTS AND HANDBILLS.

As very few new Tracts or Handbills were published in this language for some years, the Committee issued the following notice:

"To gi9'e an impulse to the production of TRACTS, it bas been agreed to offer rewards l varying from Rs. 5 to Rs. 25, for auy con-

siderod deserving of pub1ication. The amounts will depend upon the size and qualit.y of each. New Handbills are grea~ly wanted, and for them Rs. 5 will be given, while more will be allowed for larger tracts. Original compositions will be preferred to translatious."

This notice has elicited a number of MSS. It is hoped that the coming year's Report will be more satisfactory under this head.

MESSENGER OF TRUTH.

The Rev. J. L!lzarus continues to edit this little monthly paper, now iu its eighth year. The English articles were supplied by the Rev. H. J. Goffin till he went on furlough. For some months past they have been illustrated. Explanations of Christian truth, answers to Hindu objections, and items of news form the contents. During the year nearly the entire burden of the work has fallen upon the editor.

The total circulation during the year was 51,959, giving a monthly average of 4,329.

. Free specimen copies will be supplied to Mission Agents, wishing to obtain additional subscribers. The price is only one pie a copy.

BOOKS.

Two valuable new books have been issued during the year by experienced writers.

SCRIPTURE CHARACTERS is adapted, by the Rev. Joseph David, fr6n1 the English work by Dr. Jabez Burns. It will be very useful both for private reading and to native Pastors.

TaE LIFE OF.T ESUS CHRIST is by the Rev. Samuel Paul. It is mainly a devotional work. Dr. Hanna's Ou.r Lord's Life on Earth supplied much of the materials, but other authors were also consulted. It is weH adapted, with God's blessing, to deepen the spiritual life of the Tamil church.

Miss B'avergal's Works.-During the year the Rev. E. Sell, Secretary of the Madras Committee of the Church Missionary Society, offered to hand over the remaining stock of the translations of Miss Havergal's works in rramil and Telugu, if the Society would keep them in print. rrhe proposal was accepted, and they now appear on the Society'S list. Several out of stock will shortly be republished.

II. TELUGU.

In this language 19 publications were issued during the year, of which 10 were new. The number printed was 282)500.

8

TRACTS AND HANDBILLS~

The Telugu and Tamil editions have the same English articles j in the remaining matter they differ. The Rev. D. Anantam, B. A., is now 'the sole Editor of the Telugu edition,.

The total cil'Culation during the yeat· was 50,754, giving a. monthly average of 4,229. There has been an encouJ'aging increase in the circulation.

There have been 8- few rep;ints. 'fhe new publication is a poetical work in three parts, called 'rHE GOSPEL TRUMPET. It contains "Christian admonitions and Instruction" by Choudari Purushottam Garu, the most popular Telugu Christian poet.

IV. ENGLISH.

In this langnage 139,450 copies were p.dnted of 1 0 publication~. TRAC'I.'8.-Tbe visit of Mrs. Besant led to the reprint of the

SHOlt.T PAPER8.---Fl'om want of funds only four were printed during the year.

PROGREsB.-The chief event during. the year connected with

The aid of -friend'S in making the !periodical known to educated Hindus is :earnestly invited. T'he circnlationmight thus be -greatly increased.

SCRIP'PU'REB AND COMPA.N'ION VOLUMES FOR UNIVERSITY . STUDENTS .•

During the year 6,00'0 copies were printed of THE BEGINNINGS ,OF OHRISTIANITY, the companion volu.me to 13ccompany:Lllke and Acts., The Religious Tract Society supplied paper free; the cost of p;rintingand bindi~g was met by bhe Christian Literature Su.ciety. 'l'he distributi<?n of Scriptures and Companion Volumes to graduate.s :antl ,undergraduates in the ~arlras Presidency, is ·superintended by the 'Rev. S. W Organe, or ~,he Madras Bible Society.. He gives the following aocount of-the lssnes last year:

" Impressed with the importance of bringing the truths of reveiation to bear on the minds aud hearts of the young men of ·'education:and culture',

5

the Committees of the Bible and Tract Societies resolved several years ago to offer a.nnually a copy of the Bible, the New Testament and St. Luke and the Acts, with companion volumes, to the successful candidates, respectively, at the Degree, the First in Arts, and the Matriculatiou Examinations of the Madras U ni versity.

"In the year reviewed the distribution has been 8S follows :-Bibles 173, New Testaments 490. and St. Luke and the Acts 370; total 1,033 copies. Comparing these figures with those of the year before, there appears a decrease ~f 59 Bibles and of 13 St. Luke and the Acts, but an increase of 11 New Testaments. The decrease is unsatisfactory, and is accounted for chiefly by the fewer responses to the Itppeal to the heads of Colleges .and Schools to undertake the distribution. 'l'he two Societies willingly supply the books for every .passed candidate but they are powerless to carry the scheme to a .:aucoessf1l1 issue without the aid of their Missionary friends, especially those engaged in educational work."

The Rev. V Moses gives the following enconraging account of the distribution at Trevandrum :

"Tuesday, October 2nd was a day of rejoicing in this town. T~ distribution of Scriptures and Companion Volumes to U ni versity Students having been previously notified, upwards of two hundred graduates, undergraduates and others, met together in the Reading Room, some to receive the books, others to witness the happy .sight. More .than usual interest was felt in this meeting because of the presence in it of the Rev. Messrs. Kellett and Organe from Madras. The proceedings oommenced with music ,played 'by the Mission band. On being introduced to the meeting '19y M'r. Wills, .Mr. Kellett delivered a lecture on 'The Spirit of Jesus in History,' whiOb. was listened to with special attention by all ;present. The books were then given away, and the joy and :gratitude expressed by the reoipients was really very encouraging. Forty young men had the book~ that night. but more came to me for them afterwards. During my -visits to Hindu homes I often ·see evidences of these books being well appreciated, and used by the yd\lng 'lUen and their friends who borrow them for perusal. During the year 110 -retired Government offioial took from me a copy of the Companion Volume given to Graduates. The perusal of this book, together with other publication of the Sooiety, has produced suoh a change in his mind that last Saturday evening when I met him in his house, He informed me of having found Jesus as his Saviour."

USEFULNESS OF THE SOCIETY'S PUBLICATIONS.

The following are extracts from some of the letters received. The Rev. J. A. R. WALK E H., Peddapuram, Godavari District,

writes: " About six months ago a few of the Society!s booklets were handed to a

Munsiff from a distant village who called to soe me on some bUf~iness. Six weeks later he brotlght his wife ·-a very intelligent and well·iilstrncted woman-to see my wife, They came in a cart 10 miles through pouring raiu and flooded roads, to hear, as they said 'more about this comforting religion.' Many questions were pnt to the missionary's wife, the answeJ'S to which were eagerly listened to, while the Munsiff plied the missionary with questions in another part of the honse. They departed reluctantly and took with them some more of the Society's publications and some portions of Scriptnre. Let us continue to pray that this wealthy influential mlln and his wife may find the • pearl of great price.' All thifj! may be traced to a few handbills and booklets."

The Rev. J. LAZARUS, B.A., Madras, writes :-"A mau who was baptised a few Sundays ago traced his conversion to

his regular perusal of the Messenger of Tl'Uth. He used to call at my llOuse with a pie (td) month after month. I had taken no notice of him until he came to me as an inquirer, aud told the story of his conversion."

The Rev. JOSEPH JOHN, London Mission, Madras, writes:"During the year under review we have been privileged to sell

2,001 English, Tamil, and Telugu tracts, 203 scriptures, aud 3,600 copies of the Messenger of Truth. Upwards of 16,000 Handbills in three languages were distributed gratis."

Mr. JOHN reports several cases in which the Society's publi-

8

cations have been useful in leading to a knowledge of Christianity and desire to embrace it.

"N. C. is a. native of Conjevaram. He came to Madras two months ago. From the beginning of November, he almost daily attended our meetings in the Preaching Room, and listened attentively to our addresses. At the close of each meeting, I failed not to give him the Short Papers and Tracts of the Society in Tamil. One day after our meeting he came with me as far as my house, and disclosed to me his resolution of becoming a Christian: after giving him suitable advice I sent him home. The following day he came to our meeting as usual, when I asked him what had led him to the decision of becoming a Christian. He said that it was the reading of the Short Papers and Tracts I gave him every time he came to the meeting convinced him of the truth of Christianity, and that the addresses he heard every evening led to believe that in the religion of his forefat.hers there is no salvation. Such a statement from a young Brahman coming from a place noted for its idolatry and superstition is very interesting. Last '1'uesdayafter our meeting I gave him a copy of Luke's Gospel, in Tamil, as he wished to know more about the life of Jesus. I am now giving him suitable instruction. "

"On October 24th I met three Hindu girls in a house in Nammalvar Street, who bought of me some of the tracts of the Society on a former occasion. They are reading in the Baptist Mission Hindu Girls' School in the same street. They told me to my great joy, that by reading these tracts they have been led to the knowledge of Christ, and that they teach their mother and other relatives that it is sinful to worship idols, and that Jesus the Christian's God is the true God, who should be worshipped ip spirit and in truth."

"In Black Town, there are three young men, studying in the Christian College. One of them passed the B. A. examination last year. I have visited these intelligent young men several times during last year, and had prayel' with them. They are earnest readers of the Society's Books and rl'racts. They have abfl.ndoned the worship of idols and are secret disciples of Christ. By the perusal of the Society's publications and the Word of God they were led to know the truth as it is in Jesus. They have a fair knowledge of Christianity and often speak of Christ as their true Guru. I continue to visit them and pray for them. I hope the time is not very far when these three young men will shake off the fear of man, and accept Jesus Christ as their only Saviour." .

M. P. SUVISESHA.MUTHU, C. M. S. School, Sachiapuram, Tinnevelly, wribes :-

"Mr .. A. Vedamuthu who is the first convert from Sivakasi and who is now an assistant master in the C. M. S. High School, Palamcottah, came to know the truth of Ohristianity by first reading the Blind Way. For some years, I have been preaching and distributing handbills and tracts. I gave a Hindu young man a copy of the Tamil New Testament. He has read it and is now praying secretly. He wishes to become a Christian. By God's grace, I hope he will soon be baptized. I know the Society's publications have shaken the faith of some Hindus in their religion.

"I am the second convert froin Sivakasi. Religious tracts did much towards my conversion."

The Rev. V. MOSES, Trivandrum, ~rites:-"The Public Works Overseer, whose case I mentioned in my last letter,

still continues reading the Society's tracts alld papers. '1'be Hindu preachers

9

here tried in vain to s~op his study of Chl'js~in.n tl'u~h. Last Saturday evening he said to me that his doubts were gone, and that he believed in Jesus as his Saviour. May the Lord guide and help him to make a public profession of his faith!

"The Short Papers and Handbills were regularly distributed during the year to the students of the large Oollege and High schools here with very hopeful results. Many of the young men ,isit us in private and attend the prayer meetings in our Reading Room.

" V -Pillay was led by perusing some of the t Short Papers' to visit us in the Reading Room for more instruction. He has so far advanced in the knowledge of the Redeemer that he has given up the worship of idols and joined us ill adoring the true God.

" A Tamil Handbill which a cloth merchant of the Konar caste chanced to read induced him to come to us to buy a copy of the Bible. Having ob~ained the sacred volume, he knelt down in prayer with us, and went away rejoicing at the treasure he had found.

"P-Pillay was some years ago a student in the Maharajah's High School, but has now eulisted himself in the 'Nair Brigade' here. 1'he Handbills which he received. from us from tirpc to time have enlightened his mind so much that he hus given up rubbing the sacred ashes and observing otber Hindu ceremonies, and become a regular attendant at the Christian service held in tbe Reading Room and other places.

"A Brahmin Graduate, working in North 'l'ravancore as a first class Magistrate, while on a visit to one of his friends here, sent for me. He is a gentleman wbo was well known to me, and had received from me many of the Society's publications. He now wanted to buy a large type English Bible for him to read at night as he desired to form a closer acquaintance with Christ; so I sent him the Depot-keeper with a suitable copy."

"Several other instances of the 8,bove kind might be mentioned, illustrat. ing how useful are the Society's publications, iu this place."

IN MEMORIAM:.

During the year, the Committee have had to lament the 10SB of one of their most valued fellow-labourers-the Rev. G. O. NEWPORT.

Ever since his arrival in India in 1862, he took a warm interest in Christian Literature, and as soon as he had acquired a good knowledge of Tamil, he delighted to employ his pen for the benefit of the people among whom he laboured. He did excellent service iu connection with several works in rramil; but he WH.a known over all India through Progre8s, which he successfully edited except when on furlough. Its wide circulation among educated men, shows how much his work was appreciated.

Mr. Newport was looking forward to a visit home next year; but the Master said, ' come up hither,' and he rests from his labours. May the great Lord of the harvest raise up many like him to take his vacant place!
