Butterflies
In the main 2013 was a better year for butterflies than 2012 which was so cold and wet. There wereplenty of Brimstones and Orange Tips to be seen in March and April. The later emergents such asSpeckled Wood, Meadow Brown and Gatekeeper also did very well, whilst Comma, Peacock and SmallHeath were more or less in the same numbers as previous years.

Chailey Commons Society – Annual Report Survey Supplement 2013
Red Admirals did well and there were more Small Tortoiseshells to be seen this year, but the PaintedLadies that were so plentiful on this Common in 2009 were very scarce. It was also a very poor year forCommon Blues and very few were seen. The only blue that was seen on a regular basis was the HollyBlue. However some Small Coppers, Small and Large Skippers were seen, especially towards themiddle of the Common. So although it was a better year than 2012, the total number of butterflies seenwas much less than when this common was last surveyed in 2008 which is concerning.

Birds
The year 2013 started relatively mildly and March was quite warm but, by the end of month, it becamecolder and wetter for much of April, this delayed the Spring somewhat and even the oak trees wereseveral weeks late in coming into leaf. This in turn had quite some impact on the breeding season.

It was interesting to see Buzzards and Kestrels regularly flying over the common, a Sparrowhawkwas seen chasing a blackbird in the woods beside the A275 and there was even a brief sighting of aPeregrine Falcon high above.
Our Survey for 2013 showed some fifty three species, one more than the previous survey on MemorialCommon in 2008. The Survey was carried out from January until December with at least one countevery month.
At least two Nightjars were seen to be displaying in early June. Unfortunately the Dartford Warblersonce again failed to appear and also this year no Stonechats were seen either.
Notable as always, the breeding successes were the Blue Tit and Wren with fourteen breedingterritories and the Robin with thirteen. The Chaffinch and Great Tit both had ten territories. In thecase of the Chiffchaff, Whitethroat and the Blackcap the breeding levels seemed reasonably stableon this common, but apart from a few migrant pairs passing through, we appear to have lost out Willow

Warblers. It has become a trend that the Willow Warblers have, over the last decade or so, started totravel much further north to breed. With regard to other migrants a flock of some 35 Redwings were seen feeding one morning on theSports Ground and a flock of some 11 Siskins were seen feeding on birch seeds on a large tree in themiddle of the common.
The next common to be surveyed in 2014 is Pound Common when we hope the weather conditions willbe better for the breeding birds.
