ANNUAL REPORT
Dear Friends,
In the past year, Playworks collectively practiced adapting, changing, and listening to ensure that we could positively transform student experiences while running sustainably. School experiences will change for kids and educators moving forward. The importance of the role we play in helping to ensure that students have what they need will not change.
As I write this, we’re experiencing a global pandemic that will reshape the education experience for kids and educators in many ways. We will navigate our way through this challenging time together. It will undoubtedly require some hard choices and a willingness to adapt. But looking forward to the year ahead, keeping in mind the salient role that play can serve in helping students to realize their potential will be key.
Even in this moment it is worth reflecting on what has come before. In 2019 we made some important programmatic shifts, moving increasingly in the direction of partnering with others to maximize our reach and focusing on the larger outcome of safe and healthy play. These changes put a greater emphasis on how our work supports kids in reaching their potential. And it worked.
Playworks Junior Coach Cyrus was selected for the leadership program to help him reach his potential. His school Principal Dr. Montelongo told us, “This student who struggled in second and third grade changed to become one of the school’s leaders. He really is a mentor to the younger students now. That one opportunity to experience leadership allowed him to be comfortable in participating in even more activities. Now as a sixth grader, I can say he has the skills to be successful.”
One lesson from 2019 will undoubtedly be important for whatever comes next, and that is that we couldn’t do any of this without you. Playworks is, and always has been, a collective effort. Your support for this work is what has made it possible to bring safe and healthy play to schools throughout the country for the past twenty-four years, and it will be essential to us figuring out how best to ensure that students experience the social connection they need when schools reopen. Together, we’ll continue adapting so that we can support kids like Cyrus for many years to come.
Thanks for all you do to promote play and Playworks,
Elizabeth CushingPresident
