2017A Message from Our Board President & Executive Director

Over 52 years ago, a group of individuals gathered to do something about the pressing needs in our community. Little did they know that their vision would impact so many lives, continuing as a place of welcome, compassion, safety, and healing for so many years to come!

William Temple House services have never been more relevant than they are now. As the cost of housing and other basic necessities continues to rise, individuals and families in our community face difficult decisions about paying their rent and utilities, buying groceries, or filling

prescriptions. When people find themselves in challenging situations, we are here to offer support through mental health counseling, emergency assistance, and spiritual care programs. The growing need for our services is reflected in the increased demand we saw in nearly every program this year.

2017 was full of change and excitement for William Temple House, including transitions in agency leadership. It was also a challenging year for us financially as our program needs have outpaced our fundraising efforts. In addition, a nearby gas explosion and its aftermath disrupted Thrift Store business for many months, resulting in a 5% decrease in sales for the year, further reducing our resources. Rather than cut client services, the Board of Directors decided to allocate operational reserves to fill the current shortfall. We will continue to draw strength from our community as we build a more sustainable financial future—whether you are a first-time donor or a longtime friend of William Temple House, your support is making a difference for us and our clients!

William Temple House by the NumbersOctober 2016 through September 2017

The food pantry distributed 174,087 pounds of healthy produce, fresh meats, and staple ingredients in more than 5,400 client visits, benefiting more than 9,000 household members.

The Emergency Assistance & Dialogue Program awarded $61,936 in one-time financial assistance to 195 clients for rent and utility bills to help families keep the lights on and stay in their homes.

235 kids and their parents received holiday gifts and delicious meal boxes during the Holiday Family Program.

3 new outreach efforts into the community included Pride NW in June, National Night Out in August, and Day of Dignity in September.

On average, counseling clients paid $4.90 per mental health counseling session and no one was turned away for inability to pay.

73 pairs of glasses were distributed in one day as part of our first-ever free vision clinic.

Thrift StoreThe fiscal year started out with a BOOM (literally) when a gas explosion destroyed five businesses on nw 23rd and Glisan Street adjacent to our Thrift Store. Although it caused disruption to our business, we are so grateful for the continued support of our customers and the 10,000+ in-kind donations received this year.

Who We Are

For more than 50 years, William Temple House has provided support for the whole person: mind, body, and spirit. The people we serve come to us

from throughout the Portland metropolitan area with diverse needs, which we address through wraparound services responding to each person’s unique situation. We welcome everyone, including many who turn to us when other doors have been closed. The wide-ranging programs and services our agency offers honor the intrinsic worth and dignity of each person we serve, helping people make it through another day, get back on their feet, and transform their lives. This important work would not be possible without the help of our community!

Our MissionWilliam Temple House restores hope and renews strength in individuals and families in a welcoming and respectful atmosphere. With low- and no-cost mental health counseling, social services and spiritual care, we lend a helping hand to Portland’s most vulnerable populations.

At a time when Oregon trails the nation for mental health care, our counseling services continue to provide accessible, life-changing treatment programs for individuals, couples, and families.

Staff chaplain Rev. Marianne Allison gave thanks for the joy animals bring to our lives with neighbors, clients, and friends during the inaugural Blessing of the Animals event.

Last summer, the Children’s Clothing Closet experienced a complete renovation to improve each family’s

“shopping” experience. Participating kids feel stylish and confident with a week’s worth of brand new clothing that suits their personal style, plus shoes, school supplies, and a fun item to take home.

Our food pantry was named a Model Healthy Pantry by the Oregon Food Bank for providing nutritious (and delicious) options to our clients. We offered salads, strawberries, bell peppers, fresh meats, spices, and other healthy ingredients to 452 people on average each month.

Spiritual CareWe surveyed clients to guide our program development and increased our spiritual support offerings, including Listening Hours and the first annual Blessing of the Animals. In addition to learning more about what spiritual care means to our clients, the survey feedback helped guide the renovation of our chapel and sacred space which we completed last summer.

“CounselingLast year, 405 individuals and 132 families and couples participated in mental health counseling sessions, 4% and 38% increases from 2016, respectively. A total of 4,549 counseling hours helped clients rebuild self-esteem, repair broken relationships, and find hope for a better tomorrow. Graduate student interns from 8 states worked with clients to gain real-world experience as mental health professionals. In addition, our counseling interns offered public support groups on grief, life changes, anxiety and stress, compassionate communication, and personal growth.

Social ServicesEmergency food assistance through our certified Model Healthy Pantry continues to be our largest support area, serving more clients than we have in recent years. Other growing program areas include vision care, rent and utility assistance, and the Children’s Clothing Closet, which was fully renovated this summer.

Anyone can experience crises. Any one of us could have a medical problem or get in a car accident or have a sick child and we would be in a situation where we would need services like those at William Temple House. Our doors are open to anyone experiencing gaps or disparities in their lives, and in my view, the support we provide is immeasurable.”
