2 Caring For Others | 2015 ANNUAL REPORT

The gap between the rich and poor has never been wider.

Hunger, homelessness, joblessness, illiteracy and health disparities are a daily reality for millions of people around the world. At Caring For Others, we want to help the world see the myriad of people who are largely invisible: the child with no shoes, the senior citizen without basic necessities or the working mother struggling to make ends meet. This quest to give a voice to the faces of poverty is inspired by a man who convinced the world to support the end of apartheid – South Africa’s chosen son, the late President Nelson Mandela.

In addressing the crowd after his release from Robin Island, Mandela’s call-to-arms was simple. It is only through disciplined mass action could real change occur. The sight of freedom looming on the horizon should encourage us to redouble our efforts. He

admonished the South African people and the international community to stand together and help to shape a new nation. In the case of eradicating poverty, this sage advice also rings true. We must join together to ensure poverty does not have an environment in which to thrive.

So, what is the formula for success?

Mandela’s strategy to leverage the collective power of many certainly warrants our attention. Working together we can achieve exponentially more (in less time) than as individual contributors. Much like the people of South Africa in their quest to abolish Apartheid, we can create a fulcrum that ultimately leads to the demise of impoverished communities and restores dignity to the least of these. From our point of view, the movement to fight poverty requires four essential elements:

“Give me a lever long enough and a fulcrum on which to place it, and I shall move the world.” Archimedes

of Poverty

SERVE. SERVE. SERVE. The road to eradicating poverty begins with the work. By executing direct service programs to provide basic necessities such as food, clothing and shelter, communities and organizations can lay a solid foundation for change. When equipped with the necessary skills, knowledge, and access to resources, it becomes much easier for people to gain footing needed to improve their own lives. Each initiative, however, must be implemented with a sustainable, long-term goal in mind—to make poverty everywhere a thing of the past. It all starts with a single act of service.

AdVOCATE ANd PARTNER.Helping struggling families with basic necessities, such as food, clothing and shelter is a good first step, however eradicating poverty will require giving children, families and communities the tools they need to completely break the cycle. This can be accomplished by partnering with other organizations that share a common vision. Although every partnership is unique, research reveals that community coalitions with specific strategies and practices in common can achieve the best overall performance. By being a credible and respected partner, Caring For Others seeks to accelerate its ability to advocate on behalf of families in need.

“It always seems impossible until it is done.” Nelson Mandela

INSPIRE ACTION.It truly takes a village to tackle challenging issues like poverty. Because volunteers and donors are the lifeline of our organization, it is critical to engage supporters in a manner that resonates and inspires them to go further. We’ve also learned that by giving others a tangible way to contribute (i.e. setting up a distribution, stocking the warehouse, etc.) we ultimately help create a vanguard of community reformers.

BUILd ANd NURTURE.Finally, research suggests that children who grow up in poverty are more likely to remain in poverty as adults. For every seed we plant in an individual’s life, we must create pathways out of poverty that support and prepare them to be self-sufficient in the long run. This includes equipping them with competitive skills such as financial wellness and job training that improve the odds of success. Perhaps by building ongoing programs we can address some of the root causes of poverty, continue to expand our impact and be a global force for good.

The taste of poverty is undoubtedly bitter. And while it has the capacity to be unrelenting—even cruel in its negative effect on communities—it does not have to be a permanent. While many believe it is impossible to end poverty, there is the hope that small incremental improvements can lend dramatic results. Just as Mandela admonished the world to leverage its collective efforts to mend South Africa, we challenge others to help give a voice to the faces of poverty. The world will be a better, kinder place for us all.

Emergency Food and Senior & disabled Assistance Program

Our Emergency Food and Senior & Disabled Assistance Program includes a pantry remarkably stocked with assorted meats, canned goods, basic staples and household items such as paper products, detergent and diapers. The purpose of the Emergency Food Assistance Program is to sufficiently assist those in need and encourage them through their difficulty. The Emergency Food Assistance Program is zip code restricted and requires a needs assessment so that we can properly service the individual or family and account for all donations.

The Senior & Disabled Program allows seniors and the disabled to receive food, household and personal effects, clothing, coats and shoes that they would normally go without because of the economic strains of an extremely fixed income and the high costs of medication. Our goal with both programs is to help alleviate hunger and poverty by providing the necessary recourses to the people who come through our doors for assistance.

Catastrophic Relief Program

Our Catastrophic Relief Program provides NEW clothing and NEW furniture to families who have been devastated by natural elements beyond their control and are forced to choose between clothing and other basic necessities. These families include those who have been burned out of their homes, victims of flood or tornadoes or who are in transition from homelessness. We quickly assess their need and jump into action giving them a renewed sense of hope beyond their circumstance.

Our relief efforts reach beyond our facility, beyond our communities and beyond our borders. We provide the same help, hope and healing to those suffering with catastrophic loss whether in the United States, Asia, Africa, South America, and the Caribbean.

While our core work is clothing and food distributions, our ten signature programs, ranging from Emergency Food Assistance to International Micro

Economic Centers, are designed to engage, educate and empower both those in need and those that have a desire to give and make a difference.

disaster Recovery Center

As a Disaster Recovery Center, Caring For Others headquarters in Hapeville, GA is a readily accessible facility where families and individuals affected by natural disaster may go for a hot meal, new clothing and personal and household goods. Our disaster unit has provided assistance to those affected during Hurricanes Katrina and Sandy and the tornadoes in South Georgia and Oklahoma, among others..

Emergency Financial Assistance

Our Emergency Financial Assistance program assists in preventing homelessness by extending a helping hand with utility bills (electricity, gas and water) and mortgage/rental assistance for those who are in crisis. In most cases, we are able to prevent eviction or foreclosures by providing the essential financial resources that are needed for a more stable and secure environment.

Return to Work Program

The Return to Work Program promotes economic independence of disadvantaged men and women by providing a new professional outfit and career development training to help them become economically stable.

Our program focuses on providing critical skills such as money management and personal communication to conduct a successful job search, interview confidently and ultimately remain employed.

Community Holiday Giving

Our Community Holiday Giving Program distributes toys, clothes, food, household goods and other items to hundreds of families who may not be able to provide a meal or warm clothing for their families during the winter and Thanksgiving and Christmas Holidays. Foundations, individuals, corporations and churches donate the items.

Community Partnership Program

Our Community Partnership Program leverages our partnerships with local and national agencies, communities of faith, non-profit agencies and government agencies. This allows us to distribute more products to the areas that need it most. We currently have well over 110 partner agencies servicing various communities across the nation. Our No Bare Soles Distribution, Spring and Grow, Books for Better Children, Child Safety Week, YO Boulevard Partnership and many others have become signature events that help us serve more families and children across the nation.

CareMart

CareMart has been crowned Atlanta’s Best Kept Secret. It is truly a Community Store that gives new meaning to a bargain. All of the items in the store are brand new and range from high end to local vendors. The prices are well below retail and the affordability allows the single mother on a tight budget to buy school clothes for her children or the young man about to enter the workforce to purchase proper business attire.

Not only does CareMart help the community with its low prices but all of the proceeds from the store go right back into funding Caring For Others’ core programs to assist more families and individuals.

International Outreach

Our International Outreach has grown to include International Hubs of Caring For Others in Antigua Barbuda, Nigeria, and Guyana and partnership with local agencies to reach communities in Belize, Santo Domingo and even the Philippines. Our international expansion and outreach allows us to serve areas that are impoverished and in dire need all over the world. Our vision is to not only provide clothing, food and personal effects, but to also create Micro Centers that will help provide continual support for life skills training for new opportunities to obtain jobs indigenous to their region. The Micro Center model is one that we hope will become a staple for the Caring For Others International Hubs ad other partner organizations.

ERS Scholarship Care Fund

The ERS Scholarship Care Fund is one of our most important programs established for the sole purpose of helping children that are diligent in continuing their education on the post secondary level by giving them holistic assistance whether it be financial, food assistance or even words or notes of encouragement. It is a program birthed from the heart of Eslene Richmond-Shockley and also funded by her generosity. The financial scholarships provide assistance with purchasing books and other necessary educational materials. Each scholarship recipient is required to be an active volunteer in their local community to understand what giving back truly means.

Scholarship recipients also have the opportunity to work closely with the Founder and CEO of Caring For Others learning vital tools that are relevant to both the corporate and non-profit sectors. The invaluable hands-on knowledge given through the ERS Scholarship Care Fund is an experience that will not only last a lifetime, but also help make an impact on the world through our young minds.

Hunger, homelessness, joblessness, illiteracy, and health disparities are a daily reality for millions of people around the world.

We challenge

you to help give a voice to the faces

of poverty.

“When I founded Caring For Others in Atlanta 16 years ago, I looked toward a future where struggling families around the world would be able to live with dignity. Since that time, our helping hands have stretched across oceans to serve communities as far as the Philippines and Nepal and my home country, Guyana. Throughout this journey, I have come to understand that giving a voice to the faces of those in need will be critical in Caring For Others’ quest to do more.

In 2015, refugees in peril around the world were brought within an arm’s reach through the media and, in particular, social platforms. As their struggles were photographed, recorded, and shared, the world took notice. The plight of fathers, mothers, and children became real. Today, we are able not only to help a family in crisis in Antigua, but also to empathize with their struggle by raising awareness of their story.

This is what I hope to accomplish at Caring For Others – to let people know that a young girl in Guyana would go to school if she had a bicycle to make the trek because there is no bus to take her, that a grandmother could support two generations if granted access to a sewing machine. By developing a personal and deeply human connection we can incite others to join our mission.

No man can walk this life alone. It is only with the genuine aid and support of our partners, donors, and volunteers that we can eradicate poverty around the world. As we embark on another year of service, we will think BIG and dream BIGGER! We will give more kindness, more charity, more love, more hope, and above all, more faith.

In service,

year in review

IN MARCH, WE HELd OUR FIFTH annual No Bare Soles shoe distribution. The weather was not in our favor, but we did not let rain keep us away from our mission of helping those in need live with dignity.

• Caring For Others gave away 1,500 pairs of brand new shoes to children in Atlanta.

• We sent 4,200 pairs of brand new shoes to children in Antigua and Guyana.

• An additional 30,000 pairs of shoes were sent to the Philippines.

• This year, we ran a social media campaign #NoBareSoles encouraging followers to post photos of their own feet to show solidarity for our belief that no child should go without shoes.

SPRING MARKEd AN INSPIRING TRIP for Caring For Others and President & CEO Eslene Richmond-Shockley who visited Antigua and Barbuda as part of our Overseas Mission. This annual Easter Distribution has become a wonderful tradition of giving and an important part of our global vision.

• Mrs. Shockley met with several dignitaries during the Easter Distribution, and the Governor General Sir Rodney Williams accompanied her during the distribution to various locations throughout the islands.

• Caring For Others was named one of Antigua’s charities of choice.

• While in Antigua and Barbuda, Caring For Others served 400 families/individuals with clothing, household items, and shoes.

• This was Mrs. Shockley’s third distribution trip to Antigua and Barbuda.

ON MAY 12, NEPAL ExPERIENCEd the second of two back-to-back earthquakes. Thousands of Nepalese were killed, and the survivors faced destruction of their homes and the loss of personal goods and necessities.

• Through our Catastrophic Relief Program, Caring For Others partnered with major agencies to deliver much needed items to children and families in need.

• We were able to help provide hundreds of children with new undergarments.

As we celebrated 15 years at Caring For Others, we continued to execute our annual special events, distributions, and fundraisers, building on the strong foundation we have created since our beginning. Each year, we strive to reach more people in need throughout the world, offering them a hand up, rather than a hand out. We are pleased to report that Caring For Others served 78,315 individuals in the United States and 12,280 individuals globally in 2015. With new clothing and shoes, fresh food and dry goods, household items, and utility and rental assistance, we filled the gap for families in the United States, Antigua, Guyana, Nepal, Nigeria, and the Philippines.

THIS YEAR, CARING FOR OTHERS was pleased to witness a positive shift in the government of Guyana, Mrs. Shockley’s home country. In turn, this has led to a strengthening of our relationship with the country and improved our ability to assist Guyanese in need. While the political changes point to a brighter future, a high percentage of Guyana’s citizens, especially women and children, currently remain in impoverished living conditions.

• In June, Mrs. Shockley traveled to Guyana and had the opportunity to meet with some members of the new government.

• Mrs. Shockley was able to devise a plan for Caring For Others to help combat poverty in some of the country’s most impoverished areas.

• Tiger Bay was identified as one of the areas of focus for the work of Caring For Others. In this area, many homes are without plumbing or running water, and residents lack the basic necessities for sustainability, health, and welfare.

• A special Caring For Others Guyana taskforce was created to concentrate on the distinct situations and needs of Guyana.

• During the visit, Caring For Others distributed product to children at the Drop Off Center in Georgetown, and more than 1,250 families and children received gifts during the Holiday Season. Clothing, shoes, toys, and other necessities were given to families in Linden, Golden Grove, Tiger Bay, Region 8, and Region 9.

WHILE POVERTY PRESENTS A GLOBAL problem, Atlanta’s Boulevard Corridor is one of the poorest neighborhoods in the United States with household incomes lower than 91% of the country and a childhood poverty rate higher than 71% of the country. In 2015, we initiated the Caring For Boulevard program to directly identify and serve families in need and participated in Yo! Boulevard, a summer back-to-school block party held along the Boulevard Corridor.

• In partnership with Pathways Community Network, Caring For Others provided 250 families with transformative services.

• Following a period of open enrollment and needs-based assessment, each family received food, household goods, personal effects, new shoes, and clothing.

• During the one-day Yo! Boulevard event, Caring For Others served an additional 450 resident families with back-to-school clothing and books.

THERE IS A TIME TO CELEBRATE, and at Caring For Others, that time comes each autumn. With a Patron Party and our annual “The Art of Nature” Gala, Caring For Others honors our supporting humanitarians, commemorates the work we have accomplished each year, and thanks those who have helped us achieve our mission.

• TEW Galleries graciously hosted our Patron Party in September, an event that served as a kickoff to our annual Gala.

• October 2015 welcomed the highest Gala attendance in Caring For Others history, selling out to nearly 350 delighted guests who joined us at the Georgia Aquarium’s Oceans Ballroom.

The Gala serves as an important fundraiser for Caring For Others each year.

• We presented Humanitarian of Hope awards to Atlanta City Councilman Kwanza Hall and philanthropist Timothy Tew. Both were honored for their commitment to public and community service.

• Additionally, we honored General Manager of Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, Miguel Southwell, with the Global Humanitarian Award for his international efforts to fight poverty.

IN NOVEMBER, CARING FOR Others welcomed the First Lady of Guyana along with several delegates for a roundtable discussion on poverty eradication. Later in the month, we commenced holiday shopping with the annual Black Friday Sale at CareMart.

• We were delighted to welcome the First Lady of the Cooperative Republic of Guyana Mrs. Sandra Granger, The Hon. Minister of Social Cohesion Ms. Amna Ally, Member of Parliament Hon. Jermaine Figueira, Ms. Shabakie Fernandes CFO Guyana, Mr. Hanley Sam CFO Antigua and several Guyanese dignitaries and representatives from Atlanta’s international agencies in early November.

• The First Lady’s visit included a tour of Caring For Others’ facilities and warehouse as well as a tour of the Atlanta Community Food Bank.

• City of Atlanta Councilmember, District 2, Kwanza Hall joined the esteemed group to offer a City of Atlanta Proclamation to First Lady Granger and the delegates.

• At the farewell reception, Atlanta Council President Ceasar Mitchell presented a pin to commemorate her visit.

• In keeping with retail tradition in the United States, Caring For Others opened the doors of CareMart early on the Friday after Thanksgiving to welcome hundreds of eager shoppers.

• Black Friday is one of Caring For Others’ most vital income-earning opportunities each year and helps us fund local and overseas distributions.

• Through a restructured shopping format, which featured pre-registration for shopping timeslots, CareMart welcomed 150 RSVP guests and an additional 75 non-registered shoppers, earning upwards of $27,000 on Black Friday.

WE CLOSE EACH YEAR WITH our Annual Community Holiday Giving – a day of joy supported by dozens of volunteers and a variety of agency partners.

• Our 15th Annual Community Holiday Giving included events taking place simultaneously in Atlanta, Antigua, and Guyana.

• In Atlanta, Caring For Others served approximately 250 pre-registered families who “shopped” for three items per child. We also provided one winter coat per family.

• In Antigua and Guyana, Caring For Others provided Christmas toys and clothing to an additional 500 families.

• Caring For Others was supported in this effort by KIDS/Fashion Delivers; Mark Carroll & Friends; Stewart, Seay and Fulton Trial Attorneys; WM Events; Delta; and the Chik-fil-A Foundation.

“Wars of nations

are fought to change maps. But

wars of poverty

are fought to map

change.”Muhammad Ali

“thankfulAs we embark on each New Year, I find there is value reflecting upon the one that has just passed. Caring For Others had what I consider a 2015 filled with successes enjoyed and challenges met.

Our successes include an increased recognition of our organization and mission within the Atlanta area and internationally. Our foundational programs No Bare Soles and the Community Holiday Giving again effectively supported our primary mission of helping others while also offering respect. Shoes for the No Bare Soles program were distributed in Atlanta, as well as the Philippines, Guyana, and Nigeria.

In 2015, our Board members have made advances in establishing our educational program outreach, in identifying facility improvement programs and plans, and in outlining our programs for strategic development. The Art of Nature Gala, our primary fundraising event honoring important humanitarians, showed important strides. We sold more tables than ever before, demonstrating our increased name recognition in the Atlanta area.

Our challenges were not insignificant in 2015. Attempted break-ins to the warehouse added to costs for CFO including repairs and additional security investments. Due to continuing economic recovery challenges in the area, as well as the cultural shift we are seeing towards more online shopping, our onsite store CareMart did not perform as well as the previous year. We did not allow these inconveniences to impede our mission.

We are thankful for both the successes and the challenges, as collectively they help us to grow stronger. We have demonstrated our resiliency, and hopefully, our value.

Ideally, I would like to say that the need for our services is declining, but this is not the case. In the Atlanta area, economic recovery has been slower than nationally, and Atlanta has not yet given up the dubious distinction of being the number one city in the nation with the most children living at or below the poverty level. It is only through the ongoing donations and support from our volunteers and donors that we will be able to improve this situation.

I wish to extend my thanks to all of our loyal supporters. We continue to count on each and every one of you to advance our mission. Please continue to help spread the word about Caring For Others and the good that we are achieving in both the Atlanta community and worldwide.

“The partnership between the Dream Big Foundation and Caring For Others will be

an amazing opportunity for two dynamic social service organizations to join forces

to further our individual and mutual goals in supporting the needs of the voiceless.

Since the inception of our Feeding NYC program after 9/11, we have been

able to positively impact families throughout New York City. We hope that

through our inaugural Feeding ATL event, in collaboration with Caring For

Others, that we are able to support Atlanta residents who are also enduring the

effects of unemployment and poverty. The challenges of those in low-income

neighborhoods persist and at times can be daunting. However, as a result of this

collaboration, we are heartened by the possibilities of making significant and

lasting impact in support of these communities.
