Theresa ForthoferP R E S I D E N T & C E O

Our role as advocates for children with disabilities proved especiallyimportant in fiscal year 2015. While the state of Illinois operated without abudget, Easter Seals DuPage & Fox Valley remained fiscally strong – as didour voices. Our consistent and dedicated focus on the importance ofdevelopmental screenings, early identification, and early intervention hasstrengthened our leadership role in the community. However, at our core,

we remain committed to providing exceptional, life-changing therapyservices for the 1,000 children we serve each week.

At the close of another year, our history is richer and our future is brighter.

The University Chicago and Easter Seals DuPage & Fox Valley aligned toopen a Medical Diagnostic Clinic.

We introduced WalkAide technology to ourPhysical Therapy department.

We opened the doors to the first customLEGO Room in the United States.

We launched a partnership to reach 27,000 daycare centers in DuPageCounty with the Ages & Stages developmental screening tool.

This year’s most notable highlights point to the expertise, partnerships, generosity and cutting-edge technology that enable us to build brighterfutures for children with special needs. Thank you!

An exciting partnership between Easter Seals DuPage &

Fox Valley and the University of Chicago brings one ofChicago’s leading developmental-behavioralpediatricians to Easter Seals, Villa Park.

The Medical Diagnostic Clinic, launched in March 2015,

pairs Dr. Peter Smith with an interdisciplinary team ofEaster Seals therapists to provide answers to familieswhose children face medical complications and delays, but do not have a formal diagnosis.

The clinic was developed in response to the lengthy wait lists for diagnostic clinics at area hospitals, and for theunique perspective the Easter Seals team offers. As the only medical diagnostic clinic to include a parent liaison,

families leave equipped with the resources and support they need to address their newly found diagnosis. Inaddition, the clinic offers the expertise of a speech-language pathologist, occupational therapist anddevelopmental therapist as well as a developmental-behavioral pediatrician.

By evaluating each child’s medical history and observing their abilities and challenges, the doctor and therapistsidentify a diagnosis as well as a treatment plan. Dr. Smith appreciates this multi-disciplinary approach.

“Working as an interdisciplinary team both improves our ‘product’ – the sum is greater than the simple addition ofparts – and allows us to learn from each other’s unique skill set,” said Smith.

A PARTNERSHIPMADE POSSIBLE

MA K I N G T H E F I R S T F I V E C O U N T

We are proud of our partnership with the YWCA ChildCare Resource and Referral to provide developmentalprogress screenings to 27,000 children in daycare centersthroughout DuPage County using the free andconfidential online screening tool at AskEasterSeals.com.

The Ages and Stages Questionnaire (ASQ) helps parentsand caregivers determine if a child is meeting theirmilestones. This collaboration was made possible withfunding from the Bright & Early DuPage Initiative of theDuPage Community Foundation, now known as theDuPage Foundation.

This collaboration educates childcare providers on properuse of the ASQ and arms them with a tool that willshowcase milestones and identify delays. Thispartnership has increased awareness of the ASQ andpromotes the importance of regular screenings for allyoung children ages 0 - 5. If delays are identified, theteam at Easter Seals DuPage & Fox Valley provides thenecessary support and resources so children enter schoolprepared for a lifetime of learning.
