Years ago, in 2005, a young high school student by the name of Eddie Bobbitt was working in a downtown New Albany retail store. One day while Eddie was at work, he had a nice conversation with a customer. The customer thanked Eddie for his help and left the store. Moments later she came back into the store and asked Eddie if he’d ever worked with kids. When he remarked that he hadn’t, she commented on his outgoing personality, how she thought he’d be great working with the younger population, and told Eddie about Camp Quality. She explained how it was a week-long summer camp created for kids with cancer. The kids were assigned to companions, young adults that were their “buddy” while attending camp. She suggested Eddie look into being a companion because she thought he would be great working with kids. He thanked the woman and she left the store a final time. Eddie had never heard of Camp Quality before that day but after talking with the woman and learning about the work the camp did for kids with cancer, he was sold. He knew this was something that he wanted to be a part of. His own mother had passed away after a battle with cancer when he was ten years old so he had a genuine perspective of the effects cancer has on a child and a family. At the time Eddie met the woman in the store in 2005, he was busy with high school, applying to colleges, working part-time, and life in general. In 2008, he hadn’t forgotten about that conversation and was ready to get involved with Camp Quality as a companion, and he did – jumping in with both feet. He became a volunteer companion and then, in 2013, there was a leadership change within the organization. Eddie was asked if he would lead the development efforts of CQK, along with fulfilling his regular full-time position at the University of Louisville. Today, Eddie serves as the organization’s Co- Executive Director and Director of Development. Entwistle was also responsible for introducing Camp Quality to several countries including the United States. Today, each Camp Quality USA location, 14 affiliations throughout the United States, hosts a week-long residential summer camp for children, the “Super Bowl” of events, and a reunion in the fall. Locally, Camp Quality Kentucky and Camp Quality Indiana were founded in the late 1980s. In 2006, Camp Quality Indiana closed and merged with Camp Quality Kentucky becoming Camp Quality Kentuckiana and serving all families in the metro Louisville area. Three years ago, CQK served 58 families. In 2016, that number

...continued from page 1 jumped to 90 families, which is a bittersweet scenario. Eddie explains the increase in campers is due to the word getting out about the camp and more families taking advantage of what it has to offer after hearing the positive impact it has on children.

CQK is always for looking for exceptional individuals to join Camp Quality as a companion. Camp Quality campers range in ages 5 to 17 years old. Companions must be 18 years old or older and must complete six hours of training to be certified. CQK also needs individuals who have a special skill to share with the campers, such as jewelry or pottery making, pet therapy, or other life skill or hobby that might appeal to children of any age.

We thank Camp Quality Kentuckiana for the impact they have on children and families in our community, bringing smiles and happy days to so many in need. As the statement behind the origin of their name explains, “No one can do anything about the quantity of life, but we all can do something about the quality . . .”

Please visit www.campqualityusa.com/ki for more information regarding programming, volunteering or making a donation.

Breast Biopsy System: Relieving the Discomfort

2

In 2015, the Floyd Memorial Foundation provided a grant for the purchase of the Affirm® Breast Biopsy System for the Women’s Imaging department to replace the former traditional stereotactic biopsy system.

Since the installment of the breast biopsy system in fall of 2015, the only one of its kind in Southern Indiana, physicians have noted better biopsy results allowing for an increase in the level of certainty for cancer detection, diagnosis and treatment.

The Affirm provides more accurate targeting for the physician to view the breast tissue in millimeter layers, so they can better identify the exact location of the calcification or mass for the biopsy. Also with the breast biopsy system, the patient is able to sit upright in a chair while the biopsy is being conducted versus lying on their stomach for long periods of time, providing more comfort to the patient. Today, it now takes half the time to do a biopsy with the new system and the medical staff can now expect more accurate biopsy results that optimize the patient experience and aids in the early detection of breast cancer.

The Floyd Memorial Foundation is proud to partner with the Women’s Imaging department at Baptist Health Floyd in fighting the battle against breast cancer.

Foundation Supports Associate Educational Scholarships

“Color Your World” Art Contest

For the Second Annual Floyd Memorial Foundation Art Contest, kindergarten through fourth grade students at nine New Albany Floyd County schools and St. Anthony’s of Padua entered an art piece supporting the theme “Color Your World”. Each school submitted one art piece to represent each grade amounting to 54 entries overall!

Those creations were framed and displayed on the walls in the hallways at Floyd Memorial Hospital (now Baptist Health Floyd). For six weeks in November and December, patients, visitors and hospital associates voted on their favorite art piece. The winner and runner-up received a monetary award and the winner was featured in the News and Tribune. We sincerely appreciate all participating art teachers’ time and enthusiasm for this annual program and all those who voted! Thank you, also, to Ben Franklin Arts and Crafts for their support!

2015 Foundation Grant Dollars Distribution Thank You WHAS Crusade for Children

For many years the WHAS Crusade for Children has graciously supported the pediatric patients at Floyd Memorial Hospital (now Baptist Health Floyd). In 2015, the Floyd Memorial Foundation was awarded $35,000 to support the purchase

of a fetal monitor and CL telemetry, defibrillator/monitor, and isolette. Thanks to their generosity, more advanced equipment is in place in order for the Baptist Health Floyd medical staff to more effectively care for and treat our young patients. We appreciate their compassionate and continued support of the Southern Indiana community!

Massage Therapy Works Wonders

For many years the Floyd Memorial Cancer Center of Indiana (now Baptist Health Cancer Center of Indiana) has offered massage therapy to those patients who have been diagnosed with cancer or are dealing with a similar serious illness. The massage therapy is complimentary to the patient thanks to a grant from the Horseshoe Foundation of Floyd County.

The therapeutic massage program was founded to assist cancer and terminal or seriously ill patients combat the growing stresses and aches and pains that coincide with their treatment. With grant funding for this project, effective therapeutic massage has been offered free-of-charge to patients from Floyd County who are treated at Baptist Health Floyd or the Cancer Center

and suffering from cancer or other serious medical condition. Services offered coincide with doctor, treatment and outpatient visits and are also offered as an inpatient service on-site at Baptist Health Floyd.

Patients who have been diagnosed with and are being treated for cancer or other serious, life threatening or debilitating illness often experience feelings of depression, loneliness, despair, body aches and pains and increased stress. Studies show that patients who receive massage therapy during or throughout their treatment are more at ease, feel less pain and can appreciate a relatively pain- and stress-free quality of life as they continue with their treatment. We thank the Horseshoe Foundation for their continued support of this valuable and essential program!

White Coat Dinner Foundation Celebrates the Holidays with Floyd Memorial Associates

In January 2015, the Foundation hosted the first White Coat Dinner at the Calumet Club in downtown New Albany. For the first event of this nature in the Foundation’s history, the Foundation honored four of the many founding physicians of Floyd Memorial Hospital

with the assistance of co-chairs Dr. Michael Bittenbender and Dr. John Crase. In particular, Dr. James McCullough Sr., Dr. Everett Bickers, Dr. William Garner Jr., and Dr. Daniel Cannon were recognized posthumously. The evening paid tribute to their professional dedication and unwavering commitment while they diligently served their patients at Floyd Memorial Hospital over the course of many years.

Friends and family members who knew and respected these gentlemen shared stories from the operating room, community meetings, time spent at home with their family, and time treating patients. They were part of a generation of physicians gone by, who were “on call” 24/7 for their patients, taking calls around the clock, meeting families at their office or hospital in the middle of the night when needed, stepping away from family dinners to take calls, making house calls, doing whatever was needed for the better health and comfort of the patient. One morning they might deliver a baby and that afternoon operate on a knee. They were specialists in their own right, not only specialists of the medical profession, but specialists in the eye of the patient, the nurse, the hospital attendant, all who interacted with these gentlemen, witnessing their integrity firsthand and respecting and honoring their commitment.

We thank these physicians, and their families, for all they did to grow and sustain Floyd Memorial Hospital!

Proceeds from the annual White Coat Dinner support the mission of the Floyd Memorial Foundation. For more information about the annual White Coat Dinner, contact the Foundation office (812) 949-5803.

In conjunction with the Foundation/Metro United Way Combined Campaign, the Foundation/United Way Committee coordinated a Trunk or Treat for Floyd Memorial associates and their families on October 24th to celebrate Halloween. Unfortunately, inclement weather threatened the outdoor event so it was moved inside to the Paris Education Center. Several service departments participated with a booth (versus a “trunk”), offering the trick or treaters the opportunity to not only trick or treat for candy but participate in corn tosses, a football toss, go fish and bob for apples. We had over 400 attend!

Thank you to all who supported the Trunk or Treat and helped make Halloween a “ghoul-y” good time!

On Saturday, December 19th, the Foundation hosted a Breakfast with Santa Claus in the cafeteria for associates and their children. Food and Nutrition offered pancakes, fruit and beverages for families to enjoy after children shared their Christmas list with Santa. We had an overwhelming response, keeping Santa and Mrs. Claus very busy that morning! We appreciate Mr. and Mrs. Claus stopping by to wish our associates and their families a very special and blessed Christmas!

For the 27th consecutive year, Fred Geswein has organized Fast Freddie’s Festive Five Mile Foot Feast on Thanksgiving Day at the Floyd County 4-H Fairgrounds in New Albany. He originally started the race to raise money for diabetes after his two children were diagnosed with type 1, or

juvenile, diabetes. The race has grown substantially over the years and welcomes runners of all ages and running abilities from a wide spectrum, from the Olympic runner to the elementary school runner. In 2015, 935 finished the five mile course. An additional 135 finished the two-mile walk. Rob Mullett was the men’s winner and Sarah Pease came in first

Fast Freddie’s Festive Five Mile Foot Feast

for the women’s division for the fifth time, setting an amazingly fast course record.

In 2015, Fast Freddie’s raised $10,000 to support the Floyd Memorial Hospital’s Joslin Diabetes Center. Thank you Fast Freddie and all the runners who came out to support this annual event!

Join Fast Freddie and a slew of other runners on Thanksgiving for your pre-turkey dinner workout! For more information about this popular annual Thanksgiving Day event, log onto www.fredrun.com.

Heritage Society members Dawn Smith and Tom & Lodie Jones enjoy the evening.

We appreciate their compassionate and continued support of the Southern Indiana community!

program to award $500 scholarships for associates’ dependent children or grandchildren. These applicants were required to also be in good scholastic standing and enrolled or attending an accredited college or university program. We received an overwhelming response and awarded 17 $500 scholarships! We hope these students are all doing well and may someday support our patients at Baptist Health Floyd with their medical technical knowledge and expertise!

As the statement behind the origin of their name explains, “No one can do anything about the quantity of life, but we all can do something about the quality . . .”

ANNUAL REPORTJanuary - December 2015

Camp Quality Kentuckiana – “Until there’s a cure, there’s camp”Floyd Memorial Foundation is proud to partner with Camp Quality Kentuckiana, a local non-profit organization focused on providing a fun outlet for kids dealing with cancer. In 2015, the Foundation partnered with Camp Quality Kentuckiana (CQK) by offering scholarships to enable children from Floyd County to attend CQK.

Eddie was asked if he would lead

the development efforts of CQK, along with fulfilling his regular full-time position at the University of Louisville. Today, Eddie serves as the organization’s Co- Executive Director and Director of Development.

Camp Quality USA serves any child dealing with cancer at any stage, pre-treatment, actively being treated, post-treatment and survivors. The organization originally started in 1983 in Australia by Vera Entwistle who wanted to provide a place where kids with cancer could be kids again. Entwistle was also responsible for introducing Camp Quality to several countries including the United States. Today, each Camp Quality USA location, 14 affiliations throughout the United States, hosts a week-long residential summer camp for children, the “Super Bowl” of events, and a reunion in the fall. Other year-round activities also include family weekend gatherings, holiday parties, day trips, winter weekend gatherings, and many other events that provide fun and friendship. Along with the annual events, volunteers participate in hospital outreach dinners. Food is brought in to families who are in the hospital with their child undergoing cancer treatment.

Floyd Memorial FoundationLooking back on 2015, the Foundation was able to fund many healthcare initiatives thanks in large part to a very successful 29th Golf Classic, generous employee participation for the Floyd Memorial Foundation/Metro United Way Combined Campaign and support received for a new event, the White Coat Dinner that celebrated the founders of Floyd Memorial Hospital (more details in this issue). Fundraising events and generous gifts to the Foundation enable us to provide funding to so many important and worthy programs and resources at both Baptist Health Floyd and health-related agencies throughout Southern Indiana. We could not do this

without you, a friend and loyal patron of the Foundation who believes in and supports our mission: supporting Baptist Health Floyd and Southern Indiana healthcare initiatives that enhance the quality of care provided to our community. Thank you for believing in us, supporting us and joining us in our efforts to ensure effective and essential healthcare is available and accessible for those in need.

Kind regards ~ Meredith A. Lambe, Executive Director
