Annual Report

2013

koinonia

WELCOME

Dear Friends,

It is always a pleasure reaching out to you each year to share our efforts on

behalf of those we proudly serve. 2013 marked the midway point for Koinonia’s

strategic direction for 2012-2014. As has been the case in previous years and an

established aspect of our organizational culture, the year began with

considerable zeal and steadfast focus.

While we love reminiscing about the past, in true Koinonia fashion, we are more

at home when we are moving forward. Throughout 2013, we made great

progress on our key initiatives, all designed with the best interest of the

individuals who depend upon us as our primary motivator.

Thanks to our innovative associates and growing list of community partners,

Koinonia has been able to enhance our services while streamlining our

processes; fine tune our efficiency while heightening our impact.

Rising Harvest Farms, our urban farm in Old Brooklyn, has continued to attract a

broad customer base drawn to its high quality array of naturally grown

produce, herbs and flowers. The Farm’s success has provided the individuals

involved in our agricultural internship program great satisfaction, thus giving

them a greater sense of self-worth and purpose.

Organizations are only as good as the people who work there. If time at

Koinonia has taught us anything it is never underestimate our staff. Our 2013

human capital survey revealed that an impressive 82% of our employees

support the mission and philosophy of Koinonia, with 74.8% demonstrating a

willingness to perform our services to the best of their ability. Koinonia is a

special place because the staff genuinely cares and takes their responsibilities to

heart.

We hope you enjoy looking back on 2013 with us. We are where we are

because we are not afraid of new thinking and new approaches, and because

of the commitment of our staff and the support of our donors.

Thank you to the many who helped to make the journey both interesting and

productive.

Best regards,

Diane Beastrom Fred Watkins President/CEO Chairman of the Board

When we look at the people we serve we see

individuals. Human beings. Each unique. Each with

special talents. Each with a spirit that inspires us to do

more and be better.

At the core of everything we do is the fundamental

conviction that we exist to create an environment in

which those we serve are able to flourish, on their terms.

As individuals, with many special qualities.

Living with an intellectual, physical and/or a

developmental disability is not a “handicap” to a fulfilled

life, nor is it an inhibitor to personal enrichment and

growth. Simply put, disability does not mean inability.

If disability meant inability, Winston Churchill & President Roosevelt would have not brought us victory at the

end of World War II & the great industrial boom that followed. If disability meant mindless, there would have

not been Albert Einstein, Alexander Graham Bell, Thomas Edison, Noble laureate American mathematician

John Forbes Nash, meaning we would be without our iPhones & electricity to power just about everything. If

disability meant void of creative talents Ludwig van Beethoven, Robin Williams, Tom Cruise, Academy award

winner Marlee Martlin would be unknowns & we would be without some timeless moving classical music,

great modern movies and side-splitting laughter. We see something special in everyone we serve.

WHAT WE SEE

HOW WE SERVE

page three

In partnership, we walk the journey of each person’s

life. Sometimes cutting the path ahead. Sometimes

encouragingly nudging from behind. Yet, always

walking along side supporting, comforting,

encouraging. Society is not always accepting of

those with a disability. It does not always see their

talents, their special gifts, and the love for life that

burns brightly in their eyes. We do, every day. And

we are grateful for that privilege.

yet reflective of the people who call them

home. That is so true at the residential

those who live inside. With comfort,

safety and convenience consistent factors

in each home we serve, the personal

touches for the individuals who reside in

them make each place warm, inviting and

reflective of each resident. Whether

sites (Waiver) or host homes, Koinonia

“ The service we render to others is really the rent we pay for our room on this earth. It is

obvious that man is himself a traveller; that the purpose of this world is not “to have and to

hold” but “to give and serve.” There can be no other meaning.”

Sir Wilfred T. Grenfell1865 to1940, was a medical missionary who devoted himself to improving the lives of the forgotten, weak and very poor.

“Colours of Life”

2014 marks our “Ruby Year” of service.
