MESSAGE FROM THE BOARD CHAIR

The need for humanitarian assistance continues to be acute in the Horn of Africa, andparticularly in Oromia Region of Ethiopia. In its first year of existence, HIRPHA International (HI)has made significant stride to play its part by providing non-food assistance to over 17,500family members in the eastern, southeastern, southern and western parts of Oromia Regionalstate. In excess of 500 women and children were also provided food and nutrition aid and/ormedical support. This inaugural report intends to outline these efforts, share victims stories andprovide the financial summary of our operation thus far.

With over 1.5 million internally displaced people in various parts of Oromia Region alone, a lotmore work still remain. HI will continue to make efforts to increase its support base, generatemore financial donations and onboard capable volunteers to sustain its operation and expandeddelivery of its program. We plan to pursue the opportunities of having local presence, and morepartnership prospects with organizations and communities that share our values and objectives. We will also continue to work with local aid organizations, the elderly, governmentrepresentatives, youth volunteers and the victims themselves for successful aid delivery.

On behalf of myself and the Board of Directors, I want to take this opportunity to thank theOromo Diaspora whose incredible generosity has made this possible.

Nasir Kenea, PhD

BACKGROUND

The Challenge

Between mid 2016 to early 2018, over1.5 million people were displaced due toconflicts in East Hararghe, WestHararghe, Bale, Guji, Borena and Wollegazones of the Oromia Regional State,Ethiopia. This also resulted in thousandsof deaths, trauma, hunger, rape andother gender based violence against thevictims. Most of the displaced arechildren and women, and they werebadly affected with illness andmalnutrition. There was very limitedorganized assistance, and help wasdesperately needed.

5

Our response

With the help from the Oromo community, resources in the Diaspora were mobilized toraise funds. In order to expedite our responseto victims, we partnered with local (on theground) humanitarian organization - HundeeOromo Grassroots Development Int. - toidentify priority areas, type of assistance, andthe necessary logistics to supply aid on site.

HIRPHA International also pertnered withIOHPA & East African Medical ReliefFoundation, to provide assistance to babies ina few localities.

The elderly, local authorities and the youthwere engaged to ensure fairness and success.

In addition to setting up the organization to be operational, in itsfirst year HI was able to raise funds and reach out to the needypeople through partnerships with other organizations.
