Creative and compassionate God
You call each and every one of us to co-operate with
your plan of salvation.
From the very first moment when your spirit
hovered over the deep you saw that ‘it was good’.
Yet time and time again we have built barriers,
pointed fingers and built up our own kingdoms.
Our calling is deep and personal and will involve
stepping out in faith.
Lord and friend, you plan to use us– with all our
imperfections and baggage– and each time we fall
you gently pick us up.
Your Son Jesus taught us the way of peace and
wholeness– and reminded us that this gift was
intended for all people– rich and poor, famous and
forgotten, weak and strong.
We praise you for the missionary societies and
congregations who selflessly work for your kingdom
here on earth. Give their members grace to be signs
of hope in this generation—as in the past.
Pour out your blessings on our missionary
endeavours– which are not for our own sake but for
your kingdom to come.
Amen

Administrative Report
In September 2011 we had an excellent AGM in Birmingham, it was a good departure to move beyond London for a change. Archbishop Longley gave us a great welcome and a good input on Evangelisation. After the AGM during the year we had three meetings of the executive and it has been an exciting year. Although we have the same secretary he now works for a different organisation. His re employment in a new incarnation strictly followed the tender process. This should not be seen as a sign of any breach with VMM. Both the CMU President and the VMM Regional Manager in England are committed to working closely together. We have tried to organise public meetings for new members and the president wrote to 82 congregations who have connections with missions or missionaries and invited them to one of the meetings. The response was poor but we continue the process and have
invited some of the interested parties today. They are very welcome indeed and this outreach work will continue in the coming year. At the last AGM we asked for details of members who would be interested in or qualified to assist in seminaries. We got responses from 4 congregations it hasn't given us a enough of a group to approach the seminaries again. However during the year the president gave a1/2 day workshop to the staff of one seminary. The President and Secretary have been cooperating with Geo House in Hampshire on running a pilot Induction course for clergy coming from outside of the UK. The secretary is now liaising with a working group chaired by Bishop Pat. There has been an acknowledgement of what has been done and what can be done to enlarge and continue this. Both the combined and mens mission committees met during the year. The sisters mission committee met during the year.

A number of members engaged very usefully in an ‘Away Day’ for the development of mission:alive ideas in this country. We heard about the successful collaboration between the various missionary groups in Ireland and began to discuss possibilities here in England & Wales. The Executive positively considered the outcome of the away day and felt it was appropriate to devote the morning of the 2012 AGM to strategic discussions on the future of the CMU and how new initiatives to grow the organisation would be resourced- especially given the profile of our current membership. One mission:alive initiative will be launched as a ‘pilot’ at the AGM- a small grants/innovation award for work overseas and formation work at home. A number of members of the CMU were invited to attend an inaugural meeting of CAF (Catholic Africa Forum) and we will continue to attend the next meeting in December. A small working group of the Executive have looked at the CMU fee structure and have come to the AGM with a proposal. We have also negotiated to see if we can have the President be a part of the Overseas Mission Committee of the Bishops Conference where many important decisions are made which affect our members. Each year the parish mission appeals raise funds for the members of the CMU Mission Committees—which is spent on their vital work overseas and supporting the congregations/missionary development and promotion at
home.
Although these are difficult financial times, it is important to remember that
the annual parish mission appeal is about far more that money. It is the primary opportunity in the Church’s year to hear first hand from a missionary– to hear the empowering message that the Church is alive and growing in all four corners of the globe. It is a especially welcomed opportunity to remind people of their baptismal call to be a
missionary and present possibilities of taking steps in
this direction.
Another aspect which CMU members appreciate is the enormous pressure under which parish priests operate– especially the request for appeals from independent charities—which however worthy– are not officially parts of the
programme.
